Community Tasting Notes (average 94.1 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 146 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Cow Town on 1/20/2024 flawed bottle: Sadly, this was corked. All the previous bottles were amazing, so I guess I’ll call it even. (427 views)
Tasted by G_H on 12/30/2023 & rated 97 points: Drinking perfectly right now! Intense, rich nose layered with blue and black berries, dried herbs and some meaty notes. Rich, opulent palate that just keeps on giving! Kudos!

As a side note: The older I get the more sensitive I become to overripness and heat. That said the alcohol is surprisingly well integrated in this wine, but I would avoid drinking it too warm 68F/20C max, to avoid getting some heat from the alcohol. (375 views)
Tasted by hkbob on 12/20/2022 & rated 96 points: Glass-staining, rich, intense and impeccably balanced. Silky smooth, blackberry liqueur, blueberries, fresh rose petals, with a hint of rosemary in the background. This improved over several hours. I liked it on its own but I loved it with roast lamb. Not for the faint of heart, this was thoroughly hedonistic. Can cruise for another 5 years or so, IMO (910 views)
Tasted by jfkwines on 12/25/2021 & rated 94 points: Decant for 3+ hours, back in the bottle brought to a restaurant. Intial nose on opening is a ton of berries, 1 oz pour of the bottle broght heavy syrup and fruit, very interated as far as tannin or wood but very thivk and sweet. 4 hours later hd completely calmed don and he fruit had balnced, slight cough syrup but that came off over the next hour. paired well with mediterarian seasoned meats. It was little too easy to drink and i wish it had lasted loger. Drink or hold but be prepared to give it time if drinking (1446 views)
Tasted by eadsaaron on 12/7/2020 & rated 94 points: Smooth tannins, chocolate, black fruits, graphite/clay. (2098 views)
Tasted by Cow Town on 7/17/2020 & rated 94 points: About nine years since my last bottle. A bit of heat on the nose early on, and some sweet liquor notes on the finish that initially made is seem more like an after dinner drink. But, after about six hours in the decanter, everything smoothed out. A big wine for sure, but wonderful, luxurious, and decadent. Not sure if this will ever age, but I might keep my last bottle for another ten years for "Science". (1941 views)
 Tasted by RickyT12 on 2/5/2020 & rated 94 points: Decanted 1.5 hours.
Big nose, alcohol seems to have calmed compared to the other bottles I have had. Quite vegetal with a slight bitter finish in a nice way. It has a really nice mix of round ripe black fruit and vegetables. Nice round flavors. Drinking well right now. (2093 views)
Tasted by RickyT12 on 10/20/2019 & rated 94 points: Decanted 1 hour. Big body. Same as previous notes, although it was a little more spicy and hot on the end. Enjoyable wine for me. (2036 views)
Tasted by srh on 10/4/2019: Friday Tasting Group: "Killer Bar" (#04 for me) (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): "The Bone Rock blend comes from the Bone Rock block of James Berry Vyd. It is a steep terrace of old head trained Syrah vines on a S facing slope. We unearthed fossilized whale bones when we terraced it, & then needed to use jack hammers to plant the vines. This wine might be the most structured blend Saxum produces, & because of its density, tannin, & acidity, it needs a few yrs to unfold. Our wines are never racked off their lees and are bottled unfined and unfiltered. 93% Syrah, 7% Grenache; 300 750ml & 30 1.5 L cases produced & released Jan '08 @ $75."

N: Iron, RIPE berries, choc -- in no particular order; Intensity lurking?

P: Med, poss MF, body; RNDISH entry with NICE, ALMOST swtish frt met by an astringent pucker which stays in touch with the init frt as it fairly seamlessly transitions into a LONG, BALANCED finish with an alluring swtness to the few, firming, dusty tannins -- & still sufficient acidity. For now with food, might improve through '20, poss '21, then drink through '27? 16.1% ABV; My EXC+. 96 pts WA, 95 Vinous (Raynolds), & 93 WS (Laube).

Note: As I'd not yet gotten to it, & hearing (good-natured) jests about its size, I saved this for #17/17 wines shared. Perhaps it had by then (≈2 hrs in a sm tasting glass?) settled in a bit, but I did NOT notice the ABV, & its heft was irrelevant to me considering all the OTHER aspects the wine brought to the table. (1956 views)
Tasted by Charlie C on 9/24/2019 & rated 93 points: 93% Syrah, 7% Grenache. 16.1% ABV. The nose is dark fruits and tarragon. Roasted meats on the palate, cherry, spice, black pepper, blueberries. Smooth tannins, sharp precise acidity, good balance. Perhaps a touch hot. Finishes smooth, moderately long with blueberry and spice. Excellent right now, but a little past prime and teetering on the brink, I think. Drink over next 2 to 3 years. (1452 views)
 Tasted by RickyT12 on 9/14/2019 & rated 95 points: Decanted 1 hour.
Great nose. Tomato, blood , hints of rhone, still some heat, but not overpowering. Interestingly hint of pool toy. Blackberry on the nose. Vanilla, pie crust. Very big nose and flavors. Controversial wine, you will either love it or hate it. Very new world. Clay and dirt comes through on the nose. Great wine. (1471 views)
Tasted by Kevnzworld on 3/7/2019 & rated 96 points: My last of three bottles
Fabulous fragrant nose
Blackberries, licorice and old leather on the palate with a touch of fresh oregano on the finish. After an hour it evolved into a great wine with depth and complexity .
The combination of secondary flavors are what makes this sing.
This wine has some time if properly stored but it’s in the 7th inning. (1487 views)
Tasted by sdr on 2/23/2019 & rated 88 points: The best part is the warm sweet violet and berry fragrance. Medium body, rather simple, melted tannins, not much structure or length. A marked difference to the much more interesting Alban Syrahs (2010 Lorraine, 2002 Reva) we compared it to, but preferred by some. (1431 views)
Tasted by jshufelt on 11/13/2018 & rated 92 points: Our last bottle was almost five years ago, and if I look at that tasting note, the only thing that has changed is that the alcoholic finish has gone away (a good thing). Otherwise, the evolution has been glacial. I can't even guess at how long this bottle is going to take to reach a new stage of development. (1546 views)
Tasted by sachsen on 6/20/2018 & rated 95 points: From magnum, pop n pour. Delicious right out of the gate. Still my favorite Saxum vintage. (1959 views)
Tasted by jsmorris707 on 7/16/2017 & rated 97 points: Decanted for 1.5 hrs, deep ruby, blueberries fill the room, blue & black fruit with some pepper, mod, tannins, long finish; amazing juice right now, but just entering its (likely long) drinking window (2507 views)
Tasted by joshabramson on 11/26/2016 & rated 96 points: Notes given right out of the bottle with no time to breathe. This is great! Big, bold, powerful fruit but not not the least bit overdone. Really beautiful wine. (2762 views)
Tasted by Screameagle on 11/24/2016 & rated 95 points: Out of a mag it tasted so young and so good. What a great Thanksgiving wine that was loved by everyone. There is certainly no rush to drink any of these you have in your cellar. Just wish I had more in my cellar. A terrific wine. (2614 views)
Tasted by andrewdodd86 on 9/6/2016 & rated 99 points: Previously Coravined, but now decanting and giving this air, just another level. Jumps out of the glass. Has totally changed my perception of Bone Rock. Upon release was good, but not amazing, with bottle age it has transformed into the second coming. Blackberry, black raspberry, solid fruit core, tannins still there. Tobacco & chocolate. In love. (2897 views)
Tasted by rustyRudy on 9/6/2016 & rated 98 points: Previous note was from a Coravined glass. We opened , decanted and aired it out this time. Big time black raspberry jam, minerals, great balanced and a super long finish. Wonderful, but not necessarily at its peak. (2646 views)
Tasted by Screameagle on 8/20/2016 & rated 95 points: Another great bottle. Showing little age this bottle was loved by all of the participants of this tasting. No rush to drink my remaining mag which should drink great for at last the next 5 years more likely the next 10 years. (1977 views)
Tasted by andrewdodd86 on 8/14/2016 & rated 98 points: Low tannin. Sweet fruit. Aromatically complex. Great depth. Strawberry/black raspberry. Slight bricking in color. Good w/Manchego cheese. Just stellar stuff. 2016-2020. (1656 views)
Tasted by rustyRudy on 8/14/2016 & rated 98 points: Dark red with very pretty red fruit, grilled meat cedar and vanilla on the nose. Mineral, spice, blueberry and black cherry fruit, perfect acidity, long finish with plenty of structure to keep this drinking well for more than a decade. Excellent with cheese and then with grilled steak. (1720 views)
Tasted by peternelson on 6/19/2016 & rated 91 points: Good, but not as excellent as the 2004 which was fantastic. B&J's (1515 views)
Tasted by markcic on 6/8/2016 & rated 94 points: Vinobruin opened a bottle at dinner - lots of fruit on the nose, blackberry, dark plums and smoked meat dominated the palate, the long smooth Saxum finish was awesome. (1461 views)

Saxum

Producer website

Justin Smith of Saxum Vineyards is focused on producing Syrah, Grenache, and Mataro based blends from the Willow Creek District of Paso Robles, California. We let our rocky calcareous soils, steep hillsides, and cooling ocean breezes speak through our wines by keeping our yields extremely low, picking fruit at the peak of ripeness, and using a minimalist approach in the cellar. We respect our land and farm everything sustainably without chemical fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides. Because our vine’s roots penetrate deep through the fissures in the calcareous soil irrigation is rarely needed. Production is kept at 5000-6000 cases per year divided between 12 different cuvees, Broken Stones, Heart Stone Vineyard, James Berry Vineyard, James Berry Vineyard White, Booker Vineyards, Rocket Block, Bone Rock, Paderewski Vineyard, G2 Vineyard, Terry Hoage Vineyard, 4hearts Vineyard, and The Hexe.

Syrah Blend

The 2018 is 40% Merlot and 60% Syrah.

James Berry Vineyard

Under the expert care of Justin Smith, James Berry Vineyard has quickly established itself as one of the premiere Rhône varietal vineyards in the state. The “Carlisle” block of James Berry Vineyard is located just below the terraced “Bone Rock” section and is planted to Syrah clones 470 and 174. Justin practices sustainable farming, using no chemical fertilizers or pesticides. And with the limestone laden soils and devigorating rootstock, the vines struggle, yielding small quantities of intensely flavored fruit.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
