Community Tasting Notes (average 96.3 pts. and median of 96 pts. in 38 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by robmatic on 3/13/2023: Fantastic wine. No notes, but everyone was more than impressed. (991 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 11/11/2022 & rated 98 points: 1982 Bordeaux (Jason's house): I've never thought much of this producer, but I must have never had this wine! Holy crap, this is Sauternes on steroids. It is sweet without even a touch of being heavy. Light as a feather with gobs of tropical fruit, spice and butterscotch. And they pulled this wine off with pinot gris? How is that possible? This was the perfect ending to a very fine tasting. (1265 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 11/10/2022 & rated 98 points: Guy's Night: 1982 Bordeaux -- One for the Books (Jason P's, St. Paul, MN): Deep amber color. Drank a glass from 375ml over 30 minutes. My last bottle and simply stunning again. Creme brulee, spiced tangerine and spiced apricot, pineapple, with layers of tropical fruits, amazing wine, crisp and lively, yet so textured and honeyed, orange blossoms, ripe peach, very, very long and intense. 98+ to 99pts. (1160 views)
Tasted by I'd Rather Be Drinking Wine on 11/10/2022 & rated 97 points: Guys Night - 1982 Bordeaux! (Jason's House): A great way to end a spectacular tasting of 1982 Bordeaux! I know ZH makes some excellent dessert wines, but who would have thought they could pull it off with Pinot Gris! I can say this is by far, and I mean BY FAR, the best Pinot Gris I ever tasted!

PNP from a half bottle. When Rocknroller suggested bring this instead of the 2001 Suduiraut I had planned, I thought this wine sounded more interesting, as I had never tasted one and had tasted the 2001 Suduiraut on a number of occasions (don't get me wrong, I love 2001 Suduiraut!). I must say, it is this kind of intermittent wisps of showing good judgement that gives me the false sense of feeling I actually have good judgement! This wine was stupendous! It showed all the elegance of a top notch Sauternes with a focus on honeyed stone fruits (apricots and Colorado peaches) with hints of pineapple and mango, coupled with honeycomb and orange peel, followed by liquid butterscotch. The wine was viscous, but also had enough acidity to balance out the wine and prevent it from being cloyingly sweet. Very elegant and an unforgettable experience if you have never had one! Thank you Kevin for sharing this! 97 points and probably only bested by Yquem in a great vintage! (1395 views)
Tasted by WineBurrowingWombat on 11/10/2022 & rated 97 points: Wine weekend in the Twin Cities; 11/10/2022-11/12/2022 (Where the frosty air is refreshing.. kind of): N: Smells like a Sauternes but a touch lighter, a bit less concentrated and much more approachable (not as heavy on the nose). Smells like what rotting white grapes looks like (bruising/bruised white grapes), concentrated white grapes with a subtle honey note.

P: Refreshingly honeyed, white grapes with a very interesting spice. A really nice acidity that cuts through the thickness, not allowing the texture and flavors to ever feel or taste cloying.

First time with a Pinot Gris that has some substantial age and my goodness did it deliver. Completely took me by surprise. Such an awesome way to end the tasting. Didn't know Pinot Gris can get like this! (1652 views)
Tasted by Montesquieu on 10/3/2022 & rated 99 points: What a joy to try this legend from 750ml. Spectacular in every way - color, aroma, flavor. Rich caramel, apricot, honey. Wish I could have had a half-bottle to myself, rather than just a half-glass, as this one bottle could highlight a month's or even year's drinking of great dessert wine. (749 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 3/11/2021: Half bottle. Worth noting ZH's efforts to protect this for the long run by using a very long cork and applying wax to the top of the cork underneath the foil capsule. And I must say that going to this trouble worked insofar as the wine was in splendid shape. Deep amber with an orange tinge. Ripe apple, apricot, fig, and spice aromas. A real essence, extremely sweet and honeyed but not cloying at all. Excellent acidity, no trace of oxidation. Even in this small format, this should last for another decade or more. A decadent glassful. (1555 views)
Tasted by ubercuvee on 3/3/2020 & rated 99 points: Spectacular notes of fruitcake on the nose and palate with great balance and nuances of spice on the finish. Absolutely at peak and a spectacular bottle. Wow (1400 views)
Tasted by theharve on 3/13/2018 & rated 94 points: holding up well (2697 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 2/10/2018: Serious Supper: Half bottle. Deep amber/brown. Brown sugar. Not as unctuous as it looks or smells. Nutty and sweet with caramel and decent acidity. Drink up. (1171 views)
Tasted by thwacker on 1/30/2018 & rated 100 points: Unbelievable. perfect balance, aging magnificently, the essence of what a SGN Pinot Gris can be. (2584 views)
Tasted by ESTEELE90 on 1/1/2018: New Year's Eve dinner tasting. Brief note. Brown sugar, dates, toffee, and stone fruits in syrup. Touch raisiny. Nice but outclassed by the Tokaj showed next to it. (2501 views)
Tasted by fred o. on 12/31/2017: skinny bottle. Dark brown color, concerned initially that it could be overly oxidized. Nose nutty, intensely floral. Palate still bright, nice mouthfeel, orangey. Pleasant and enjoyable with dessert but didn't quite have the power or layers of flavor that I expected from a SGN wine of this pedigree, perhaps a flawed bottle, purchased with unknown provenance. Nonetheless glad we were able to try it. 91 pts (2326 views)
Tasted by golfwine on 11/11/2017 & rated 92 points: What a treat to try a wine of this stature and notariety. In the glass it looked & smelled not unlike a tawny port or sherry, with those rich, full, oxidized, lanolin-like aromas of caramelized sugar. Though rich, viscous and candied, we didn’t sense any of the acidity that others wrote about, because if we had, my score would easily have been in the Extraordinary range. Very enjoyable, nonetheless. (1922 views)
Tasted by ubercuvee on 6/11/2017: Absolutely worthy of the hype ... kicking myself that I only bought 36 bottles at a insanely knock down price. (1690 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 5/4/2017 & rated 98 points: Old World Wines at Spoon & Stable (Spoon & Stable, Mpls, MN): Deep orange-amber color. PNP, from 375ml, drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. OMG, this was stunning. Incredible power both on the nose and palate. Tremendous viscosity and mouthfeel. Fantastic acidity to completely counter the sweetness and keep this lively. Great mix of fruits, tropical, orange, apricot, hints of maple and honey butter, orange blossoms. Complex is a bit of an understatement. Glorious, a truly memorable wine. (2329 views)
Tasted by peterchoy on 9/18/2016 & rated 94 points: Appearance: Bright and clear, it has deep amber color, with fading rims and legs.
Nose: Clean, with pronounced intensity of stone fruit of apricot, green fruit of quince, tropical fruit of mango, dried fruit of raisin, maturity notes of honey, citrus fruit of orange marmalade, floral notes of rose, sweet spice of 5-spice. The wine is developing.
Palate: Luscious with high acidity, the wine has medium alcohol and full body, showing pronounced intensity flavors of citrus fruit of orange peel, oxidation notes of toffee, maturity notes of honey, dried fruit of raisin. The wine has a long finish.
Conclusion: Very good quality Alsace Pinot Gris SGN, with a highly complex aromas of very strong intensity, the wine is very sweet but balanced well with the acidity, keeping it refreshing. The palate has an equally impressive with highly concentrated flavors as well as a very long finish. It is ready to drink now but can keep for another 10-15 years. (2004 views)
Tasted by KenPlace on 7/19/2015 & rated 96 points: Simply fabulous. WOTN. Apricots, botrytis, very long. (2779 views)
Tasted by JeffGMorris on 7/10/2015 & rated 96 points: Acme Annual Heirloom Tomato Dinner with Steve, Barb & Mom. From 375ml. Medium Amber in color, this wine is still relatively unevolved ( no surprise but I wanted to open one ) but still reveals plenty. A powerful wine that could not be mistaken for being from any other vineyard. Very strong minerality dominates with yellow fruits also making a presence. High acidity balances the 160 g/l residual sugar very well and washes the wine off the palate leaving a long and very satisfying finish. This is still a baby at age 17, even from a 375ml, but plenty enjoyable to drink now or for the next 50 years. 50+14+14+9+9=96+ (2557 views)
Tasted by ctulsky on 12/10/2013 & rated 100 points: I have never given points to my tasting notes, because I oppose to the idea that a bottle of wine can be described through an arbitrary number. A bottle of wine, to me is a representation of time and place, its history, undocumented sweat and tears of people who produced it. Though this bottle deserves a 100 not for the points, but for denoting 100% of what a wine can be.

Deep copper brown robe reminiscent of cognac with golden hues on the rim. Thick, slow running tears. On the nose, primary apricot giving way to a basket of fragrant ripe fruits such as nectarine, white peach, quince, displaying both yellow and green apple. Paraffin, white flowers, caramel, a hint of mulch with defined undertone of honey over a sprinkle of nutmeg and star anise. Luscious texture, intense mineral, and unbelievably high acidity on the palate with an infinitely long, clean finish. After two days, it started to unleash cherry bonbon, maple syrup, and well-aged Mosel TBA-like petrol characteristics. I never knew Pinot Gris as a varietal was capable of this sort of powerful yet elegant, and nuanced expression. With such high residual sugar while striking the counter weight of acidity and concentration, yet attaining 13% ABV is impressive. This is truly a work of art produced by a collaboration of the man and the nature, which anybody should be thrilled to revisit for the next several decades. Decanting is highly recommended. This is a meditation wine with which no food should be paired. Sheer decadent perfection. (3680 views)
Tasted by rnellans on 12/30/2012 & rated 94 points: Deep golden color. Apricot, honey...great texture and mouthfeel. Big fruit and sweetness, balance with excellent acidity. This wine should last for decades. (3782 views)
Tasted by thwacker on 12/4/2012 & rated 100 points: Have never given 100 pts, but this wine was pure liquid gold, nectar of the gods, what more could one want from a wine and what more could a wine be? Unbelievable counterpoints of sugar and acidity, mouth-coating unctuous orgasm of scents and flavors of marmalade, apricots, honey, nuts, pumpkin pie spices and a bouquet of flowers. It was a travesty to disturb and ingest this wine in an imperfect mortal body. (3720 views)
Tasted by canan on 6/16/2012 & rated 96 points: KYD #1.3: Concentrated apricot and vanilla nose. Huge depth and intensity.
The concentration follows though on the palate with a deep apricot flavor and a wild acidity.
A very powerful wine packed with vanilla and white flowers.
Beautiful intensity! (3903 views)
Tasted by Uglypinga on 5/18/2012: Nose of toffee, honey and apple. The palate was thick and juicy. I kept getting a spritzy sensation on the tip of my tongue that no one else seemed to get. I didn't think it was spritz but it felt like it. Brian kept telling me it was acidity. I don't think so. Anyway the rest of the wine was delicious but I was confused by that sensation. (3064 views)
Tasted by Jeremy Holmes on 4/10/2011: This thing is a vinous toffee apple. It is incredibly rich and sweet with great volume and enough sugar to run a Coca Cola bottling line for a week. It finishes with a flavour akin to salted caramel. A triumphant match with fresh fig tart and burnt fig, honeycomb and toffee ice cream. (2504 views)

Zind-Humbrecht

Producer website
Domaine Zind-Humbrecht is one of the stars of the Alsace, in the northeastern corner of France. Fought over for decades by Germany and France, the region, according to Robert M. Parker Jr., “is perhaps the most underrated and underutilized source of great white wines in the world.” Zind-Humbrecht was created in 1959 by Leonard Humbrecht and Genevieve Zind. Their son Olivier is now instrumental in running the 99-acre estate, which the family still owns. Like many Alsatian producers, Zind-Humbrecht makes white wines in varying degrees of sweetness, from dessert whites to very dry wines. The vineyards are planted to 30% Riesling, 30% Gewurztraminer, 29% Pinot Gris, and smaller amounts of Pinot Noir, Muscat, Chardonnay, Auxerrois and Pinot Blanc. Up to 18,000 cases are produced annually. Many are Grand Crus and single vineyard bottlings.

Pinot Gris

From Pinot Gris Wikipedia entry:
Wines made from the Pinot gris vary greatly and are dependent on the region and wine making style they are from. Alsatian Pinot gris are medium to full bodied wines with a rich, somewhat floral bouquet. They tend to be spicy in comparisons with other Pinot gris. While most Pinot gris are meant to be consumed early, Alsatian Pinot gris can age well. German Pinot gris are more full-bodied with a balance of acidity and slight sweetness. In Oregon the wines are medium bodied with a yellow to copper-pink color and aromas of pear, apple, and/or melon. In California, the Pinot gris are more light bodied with a crisp, refreshing taste with some pepper and arugula notes. The Pinot grigio style of Italy is a light-bodied, often lean wine that is light in color with sometimes spritzy flavors that can be crisp and acidic. Although this wine can be very sweet, it will begin to lose its acidity when it is nearly ripe.

Pinot gris is considered an "early to market wine" that can be bottled and out on the market within 4–12 weeks after fermentation.
