Tasted by cubswinws on 3/25/2024 & rated 91 points: Starts of with a bit of raisin notes but really fills out after being opened an hour or so. (1186 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 3/16/2024: A 65th Birthday Celebration (Schur House - Riverwoods IL): Small glass. So opulent this barely seems like serious wine to me, but I understand others like this. (1351 views)
Tasted by jsmorris707 on 1/28/2024 & rated 92 points: Similar to prior note after double decanting for an hour, except there was increased acidity that was out of balance; very good, hold for at least another year (1749 views)
Tasted by VAGenius on 1/14/2024 & rated 93 points: PnP. Nose of red raspberry, brambly berries, watermelon, and orange zest. Crisp black raspberry palate with tea, tarragon, and savory herbs. Juicy bright blueberry finish with a boatload of acidity, adding moss, lemon thyme, and hints of wintergreen. (1655 views)
Tasted by jmull on 11/24/2023 & rated 96 points: Oh wow. Absolutely gorgoeus cranberry-ish fruit with some pepper/spice and a touch of wood. Beautiful aromas but outshined by the mouthfeel, which is so light and lively due to acidity. Shockingly easy to drink given all tbat power and focus. Special. (1444 views)
Tasted by hanasowner on 11/23/2023 & rated 93 points: Popped and poured...very dark with nose of blue fruit...full-bodied with mellow tannins and long finish...drinking very well. (1250 views)
Tasted by Acohen on 11/18/2023 & rated 94 points: Great zin with bramble, blueberry, dark fruit and long finish (1391 views)
Tasted by PMTinfv on 10/20/2023 & rated 95 points: Wow! This is a stunner! Decanted and let breath for four hours and drank down over the next four. Dark fruit on the palate with spices—cardamom/cumin with a strong backbone and a finish that became a little delicate yet lasted a long time for the entire bottle. Because of the peppy acidity if drinking now it’s better with food. Window is easily another 7 years. I only have one left and will let it sit for at least two more years but if your in the mood, an incredible drink now but it needs a long decant that will be rewarded. Elegant like Papera Vineyard but more zip! (1746 views)
Tasted by pickhardt on 9/17/2023 & rated 92 points: Great dark fruit. Briary. Spice. Long finish. Brightness. Great wine. Opened the bottle (with no decant) two hours before drinking. (1806 views)
Tasted by FredericoWines on 7/15/2023 & rated 92 points: Typical New World wine style from U.S. Very fruity and jammy in the right way. Spicy and medium body. Great to pair with braised beef short ribs. (1765 views)
Tasted by stokeme on 7/5/2023 & rated 91 points: True to the House style, enjoyed my other bottle (Happy Fourth next door) with some good potluck. This full throttle rendition seemed to fit the occasion. Very straightforward, near jammy, but holding it together. Better than #1. (1820 views)
Tasted by stokeme on 6/26/2023: Notable fruit intensity but it’s monosyllable in tone as was another vintner’s 2018 recently. You could be optimistic in that it still feels somewhat primary. With more air, floral & vanillin notes waft very faintly, but so does some alcohol. Combo of red fruits, nice acidity, a finish of light sandpaper tannins.
Day 2 The alcohol adds some heat on the finish. Not sure if the balance will hold together well but the fruit should still be waiting in 18 months. 1 of 2 (2047 views)
Tasted by 1997cobalt on 6/16/2023 & rated 94 points: A bunch of dark ripe fruit, rather smooth and not at all spicy. Great long finish. It seems to be in its prime. (1779 views)
Tasted by Mike Dildine on 6/2/2023 & rated 95 points: 15% abv. Dark ruby, very aromatic. Red raspberry, black cherry, white pepper and blue fruit, really just incredibly delicious. A great wine from a great producer and an excellent vintage. Sorry to say my last bottle. (1900 views)
Tasted by Crunge on 4/25/2023: I don't get this wine. As said in my 22 Nov 2022 review, this seems nothing like a zin to me. I'm not the biggest zin drinker but with most of my experience being with Turley, Ridge, and Seghesio, this is unlike any of those. A lot of fruit to the point of being sweet and zero spices, herbs, or earth. I don't doubt the other notes here but either both my bottles were off or I just can't connect this wine with my palate. This is a sub-$10 bottle in my book. (1952 views)
Tasted by jmcnewjersey on 4/14/2023 & rated 90 points: This bottle was slightly off, with a noticeable tartness on the palate. Very unusual for a Carlisle wine, which are consistently excellent in my experience. The wine tasted similar on Night 2. (1895 views)
Tasted by Maphill01 on 3/26/2023: PNP, really nice zin. Ripe blueberry, blackberry, round and accessible, slightly creamy mouthfeel. Nice acidity to keep it fresh, no heat at all. Very well made, glad to have another. (2068 views)
Tasted by Teaky on 3/25/2023: Drank over 2 days from bottle didn’t really evolve. Very nice brambly nose red fruits, cherry, raspberry, flavors are similar with hints of cranberry also, not tannic, moderate acidity. Lush mouthfeel with long finish, one of those wines that’s greatness is hard to communicate. Very fruit forward drinking excellently for those that like their zins primary, possibly one of the best zins I’ve had! Excellent! (1910 views)
Tasted by Rywyine on 1/28/2023: Pretty damn interesting. It's probably a little early to drink this but that doesn't mean it's not delicious. Great fruit presence, more blue black but with a brambly element as well. Herbs, spice intermixed with a dry fruit characteristic. good acidity and tannins slowly ramping up. My buddy asked me if I wanted to decant and I elected not to... that was a mistake. The tannin presence increased throughout the evening and it became it's most interesting right at the end, after about 3 hours of being open. It's great to drink now, I loved it but feel free to sit on it for a while. This is a great wine. (2203 views)
Tasted by rougeamore on 1/22/2023 & rated 92 points: This blend of 86% Zinfandel and 14% mixed Blacks is deep purple in color with medium dark fruit aromas. On the palate come a mix of blackberry, blueberry, smoky spice with briary undertones. This medium bodied wine is dry with medium acidity, tannin and a med/long finish. A great wine for the price. (2027 views)
Tasted by jviz on 1/16/2023 & rated 94 points: My last bottle of 4. It continues to be my favorite Carlisle expression (but I’m ordering less broadly now). Lots of brambly fruit, across the red to blue to black spectrum. Settled down quite a bit from my last taste. I don’t regret pulling it, I drink zin for its fruit and exuberance. I doubt if this will turn out like the beautiful and restrained Joseph Swan zins of the 70s and 80s, but hopefully someone will have held some for me to backfill when the time comes. (2752 views)
Tasted by Mike Dildine on 1/13/2023 & rated 95 points: Great vintage, great producer, great vineyard. Outstanding! (2017 views)
Tasted by kcp on 12/16/2022 & rated 92 points: Tight and uninteresting on night one. Blossomed night two. (2179 views)
Tasted by Crunge on 11/22/2022: No rating because this bottle was nothing like what others described. All three of us said "sweet" in our notes. No one mentioned pepper, which I was hoping to find. A bit jammy on the finish. Dark fruits are there but the sweetness is unexpected and unwelcome, and I got none of the herbs others mention; no herbs, garrigue, slate, or any other earthiness.

Add in the nose being dominated by metal and I would not buy this again. My wife said she likes it, just that it is nothing like a zin. (2106 views)
Tasted by The Dabbler on 9/24/2022 & rated 93 points: Vagenius is right on with the herbs. Initially thought pine but thyme and bay leaf nails it with some air to the wine. I would add cherry on the nose and Sonoma Pinot like raspberry cream finish along with the Zin black pepper. Nice acidity, very enjoyable already! (2430 views)

2018 Carlisle Zinfandel Carlisle Vineyard

From release newsletter

2018 Russian River Valley “Carlisle Vineyard” Zinfandel
Schhh...WING! The 91-year-old vines of Carlisle Vineyard hit it out of the park in 2018, producing one of if not the best renditions to date. Picked on September 28th and September 30th at an average of 25.9 Brix, acidity was impressive in this moderate vintage, with an average TA of 8.8 g/L and pH of 3.22. Fully destemmed, a 10% bleed was done at crush to further concentrate the juice. After a long, even-paced fermentation (24 days!), the wine was pressed to all French oak, 23% new, and bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Tasting Note: Very dark ruby-garnet. Bordering on opaque. Like the color, a very dark fruited nose with aromas of mulberries, elderberry, Christmas tree, and baking spice. Full-bodied but with plenty Piner-Olivet acidity (this vineyard is in the Piner-Olivet area of the Russian River Valley) to keep this wine light on its feet. Similar to my favorite of the older vintages, 2005, but with less alcohol and better balance. Really quite stunning. Enjoy this benchmark, old-vine field blend from 2022 to 2030.

Carlisle Vineyard

Carlisle vineyard was planted in 1927 by Alcide Pelletti on the eastern bench of the Laguna de Santa Rosa flood plain. Both sides of the Laguna were popular for settlement by Italians immigrants in the late 1800s/early 1900s. Today, thanks to families like the Pelletti's, Frati's, Marcucci's, Barbieri's, Papera's, Mancini's, Maffei's, Montafi's, Bacigalupi's, Gambogi's, Fava's, and Saitone's, this area represents “ground zero” when it comes to old-vine Russian River Valley Zinfandel.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
