Tasted by norsktorsk on 3/9/2024 & rated 98 points: big, rich awesome. (1611 views)
Tasted by Janahanv on 2/22/2024 & rated 93 points: Graphite, and Meaty on the nose. Big, bold, and luscious on the palatte with notes of dark/black fruits. Has a little sharpness, but it adds to the complexity and structure. Definitely a fan! (1691 views)
Tasted by A.Hansen on 12/25/2023 & rated 94 points: An explosive nose of dark fruit, cassis and spice. The palate is deep, concentrated and spiced with notes dark fruit preserves, smoked meat, minerals, spices and crème de cassis. A great Christmas wine. (2314 views)
Tasted by RobbieD68 on 12/16/2023 & rated 92 points: This is good, but it's not awesome. Saxum makes a lot of amazing wines; is this one of them? Perhaps, but I may not be the best person to ask - I have come to realize that I am not a big grenache fan. Hence MY review here should not count for those who enjoy grenache. I will refer you to The Black Wine Guy (that's his podcast), as he is better versed with grenache. Still, this is tasty. Don't get me wrong. (2267 views)
Tasted by msh305 on 10/15/2023 & rated 94 points: An excellent Grenache blend, but most assuredly not worth the $148 price tag. This should blow you away from the first mouthful and that just doesn’t happen. A 1-2 hour decant will enhance your experience. (3053 views)
Tasted by bonedoc on 9/5/2023 & rated 93 points: Very good, but for $160 this should wow. (3011 views)
Tasted by mvande21 on 6/15/2023 & rated 95 points: Black/purple color. Blackberries and cassis. A big wine. Full bodied, juicy, rich and smooth. The Petite Syrah is very evident, driving the black fruit richness. High alcohol but in check. Balanced with light grained tannins and a long finish. (3267 views)
Tasted by Art SD 72 on 6/10/2023 & rated 97 points: Brought the wine over to Et Voila French Bistro. Lots of f dark fruit well balanced and very easy to drink. Went well with the escargot and rabbit leg. Enjoyed it
The wine looks inky colored. The legs are medium. There is light sediment in the bottle. It smells like prune, dust, and blackberry. It tastes like blackberry. (3002 views)
Tasted by Reg330 on 5/20/2023 & rated 97 points: not be shared lightly (2886 views)
Tasted by sbuchwal@mit.edu on 5/19/2023 & rated 100 points: Really fantastic. Very complex, with an amazing finish. (2735 views)
Tasted by 1winemaven on 4/23/2023 & rated 94 points: Exceptional now, but promises to be even better with a couple more years in the cellar.... (2718 views)
Tasted by spendergast on 1/29/2023 & rated 98 points: Another great effort from Saxum. Decanted 2 hrs., dense garnet color with notes of dark fruit: plum, back raspberry, cassis, along with glycerin and hint of oak. Great velvety mouthfeel, soft tannins with long satisfying finish. Paired with grilled lamb chops. (3115 views)
Tasted by maxima on 1/22/2023 & rated 90 points: Intense, corpulent, massif et fort gouteux.
Un style appuyé et extrait avec du
fruit à profusion. Souple et très velouté.
Fruits noirs surtout avec un peu d'épices.
Longueur sans fin et grande persistance.
Si on aime ce style, celui ci est excellent. (3576 views)
Tasted by MunkiMunks on 12/31/2022 & rated 99 points: Really amazing wine to close out 2022!

Powerful nose continues onto the palate with generous amounts of blackberries, spice, with a long velvety finish. (2970 views)
Tasted by shirazity on 12/25/2022 & rated 95 points: Big, dense, jam-packed fruit but pure in concentration. Explosive nose and silky smooth tannins. Just very well made and a monster in the glass without being cloying in any way. A pleasure to drink. (3045 views)
Tasted by norsktorsk on 12/19/2022 & rated 98 points: big rich. awesome. young but ready with a little air. (3031 views)
Tasted by mark2eye on 11/24/2022 & rated 99 points: Big and lean at the same time. Paired beautifully with our prime rib after a 4 hour decant. Drinking well now but lots of room for improvement (2756 views)
Tasted by royalscam on 11/11/2022 & rated 96 points: Outstanding Grenache based wine. Pretty intense nose of floral dark fruit, exotic spice and black pepper - jumps at you. Smooth tannins and great mouthfeel with complexity and penetration; similar flavor profile and a finish that just goes on .... it has the potential to get better, love it! (2751 views)
Tasted by Mbad77 on 10/24/2022 & rated 94 points: A serious wine. The slight negative is the high ABV (15.5%) but holds itself quite well without ridiculous density or fruit / depth. Had a sharpness / freshness about it, though isn’t a delicate light wine. Plenty of fruit, tannins, acidity and good drive . (2937 views)
Tasted by Cali Fan on 10/6/2022 & rated 95 points: Fantastic stuff if a little young and probably needs more time and breathing than I gave this botttle (2907 views)
Tasted by MoselBoy on 10/6/2022 & rated 99 points: Really outstanding. (2839 views)

Tasted by SMagowan on 4/17/2022 & rated 97 points: Easter Dinner with Friends (2022)

The wines:
2018 Peter Michael Chardonnay Mon Plaisir (96)
2017 Saxum The Hexe (97)
2006 Chateau de Beaucastel (96)

Three spectacular wines for Easter feast of a veal stew over polenta, braised carrots follow up with a flourless chocolate and hazelnut cake and a citrus cheesecake.

The 2018 Peter Michael Mon Plaisir is in a great place and shockingly good. Incredibly balanced among fruit, smoke, spices, and earth. I was expecting a good wine, but this is great and going to continue to get better as it ages. A spectacular American Chardonnay.

The 2017 Saxum The Hexe is ready for drinking. Open and decanted through an ullo filter for about 90 minutes before glasses were poured. It coats the palate with delicious fruit, herbs, soil, minerality and a touch of finesse. This should age wonderfully for 15 years, but I don’t think I can keep my hands off it. Had another glass a few days later, and it was even better. This is drinkable now and will also benefit from more bottle time. You won't hate yourself if you drink it now or if you let it lie a couple of years.

The 2006 Chateau de Beaucastel was in the beginning of its perfect place – 15 to 20 or so years of age. It is all about balance – balance of fruit and tannin, of earth and sun, of soil and air. Simply delightful. This is the first of the case for me and I will try to only drink one a year from now on. Again, I doubt I will maintain that discipline. (3778 views)
Tasted by ELH on 2/19/2022 & rated 96 points: Smooth and luxurious. Blend of Grenache 58%, Mataro 27%, Petite Syrah 11%, and Tempranillo 4%. And no Syrah. Dark and majestic with nuance. Give a good decant, though. (4064 views)

Saxum

Producer website

Justin Smith of Saxum Vineyards is focused on producing Syrah, Grenache, and Mataro based blends from the Willow Creek District of Paso Robles, California. We let our rocky calcareous soils, steep hillsides, and cooling ocean breezes speak through our wines by keeping our yields extremely low, picking fruit at the peak of ripeness, and using a minimalist approach in the cellar. We respect our land and farm everything sustainably without chemical fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides. Because our vine’s roots penetrate deep through the fissures in the calcareous soil irrigation is rarely needed. Production is kept at 5000-6000 cases per year divided between 12 different cuvees, Broken Stones, Heart Stone Vineyard, James Berry Vineyard, James Berry Vineyard White, Booker Vineyards, Rocket Block, Bone Rock, Paderewski Vineyard, G2 Vineyard, Terry Hoage Vineyard, 4hearts Vineyard, and The Hexe.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
