| Community Tasting Notes (average 91.7 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 11 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by JLCFan on 2/24/2024: A little nondescript right now, offering little but toasty American oak and anodyne blackberry fruit. A touch of smoky minerality, olive and sesame is just barely noticeable, too shy for the limelight. The tannins are plush and the balance is nice - doesn’t seem too hot. It just refuses to gain complexity, even with hours and hours of decanting. More time, likely. There is a bit of a wildness to the fruit that reminds me of Aussie Shiraz now. Overall, very tasty and the tannins are ready to soak up a fatty meal. Later on this settles into a rich, cigar-ish character with a bit of stewed fruit. This wine is still young and needs quite some time to decant - after 3 hours the flavors come together with bright tannins on the palate. I recommend at least two years for the next bottle. Stellar, expansive berry fruit, tobacco, clay minerals, a whiff of smoke, game, and olive but with bright aromatics like violets and black pepper. This is already marvelously plush and aromatic but has the hallmarks to age phenomenally. So excited to see how this develops. (829 views) | | Tasted by ChateauShiny on 10/22/2022 & rated 92 points: Decanted 2.5 hours. A light amount of sediment is starting to develop.
Nose starts off light with violets, lemon zest, and some stone fruit. Then quickly veers to blackberries, blueberries, and dark cherries supported by a very mild blend of baking spices and herbs. Medium bodied. Very primary with blackberries, blueberries, dark cherries, and currant on the palate. Hearty tannins. Long and lighter than expected finish – Lemon zest, graphite, blackberries, black olives with brine, and only a slight hint of herbs that I often get from Ridge wines.
I wanted to open a bottle of this to see how this was on the younger side. Lytton Estate Syrahs are always lighter than I am expecting. With a healthy decant this is very approachable now but these are built to go the distance. Will revisit in several years, but I am glad I have a bunch in the cellar. (938 views) | | Tasted by KVM on 11/10/2021: Dark red, black fruit, and a banana element. Red to black fruit with an interesting mouth watering finish with herb or salt to it. So young. Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent. USAAmerican wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.California2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson Sonoma CountyMendocino CountyDry Creek Valley Winegrowers of Dry Creek Valley | Dry Creek Valley Association | Appellation America | San Francisco Chronicle Article |
