(514 views) | | Tasted by D.Callahan on 4/25/2019 flawed bottle: Heavy Brett! (662 views) | | Tasted by Red alert on 6/22/2014 & rated 96 points: Excellent, firm forward structure gives personality to the chewy nature of the deep currant notes of this wine. Great balance through its med to long finish. (1753 views) | | Tasted by Paul Lin on 12/10/2012 & rated 88 points: Large scaled and fruit forward. A touch of herbaceousness on the finish reminds you that it's Cab Franc. Otherwise it could be easily mistaken for Syrah or Cabernet. A crowd pleasing wine. (2115 views) | | Tasted by corkcellar on 10/21/2012 & rated 91 points: Agree completely with previous commenter. This wine was worth the wait, in a word - fabulous. (2027 views) | | Tasted by B&T on 3/4/2012 & rated 94 points: Well, this wine has aged gracefully and is drinking wonderfully right now. Such an amazing Cab Franc, the dry farming of this vineyard really brings the best out in this grape. Simply fantastic. (1912 views) | | Tasted by nroscoe on 11/30/2011 & rated 93 points: Very interesting wine, big fruit, big nose, but not overbearing and smooth. This was an excellent Thanksgiving wine and great finish to other wines earlier in the meal. I wish I had bought more of this. (2033 views) | | Tasted by samiamx_1999 on 5/21/2011 & rated 90 points: If anyone wants to know what a cab franc tastes like, this is the prototype flavor profile. Heavy, flowery, dash of clover perhaps. (1214 views) | | Tasted by B&T on 1/22/2011 & rated 91 points: Fantastic wine. loads of ripe black fruit, with notes of eucalyptus, cedar. Well balanced and drinking great right now. (1072 views) | | Tasted by tbone on 1/9/2011: P&P'ed. First hour stewed plums and scorched earth. After first hour evolved into a full bodied, velvety and hedonistic wine. Massive improvement from first opening. Note to self, decant minimum 1 hour next time. Also throwing off a massive amount of sediment, so much you can hardly see through bottle as the sides are coated. Can definitely smell and taste the heat, which is a detraction, but is a beautiful wine nonetheless. Very well balanced besides the alcohol, not sure if time will help. (1164 views) | | Tasted by IrishRover on 8/20/2010 & rated 90 points: Nice big, tasty wine. (1459 views) | | Tasted by ggk on 3/2/2010 & rated 92 points: fantastic! interesting and delicious balance of ripe black fruit, some raspberry, spice, jalapeno and earthiness. medium tannin, medium body, smooth on the palate. (1433 views) | | Tasted by alamoave on 11/8/2009 & rated 90 points: Picked up a bottle at the vineyard last fall. Like it. Big fruit, firm but not overbearing tannins, and no cloying vanilla that characterized too many of its Cali peers. (1489 views) | | Tasted by kanab ram on 5/15/2009: By the time I got around to this wine (decanted the night before because of some of the reviews) it was stunning. Thick and chewy with lots of sweet ripe black fruit. Well put together. (1549 views) | | Tasted by Sir Lloyd on 11/23/2008 & rated 92 points: Dark, lots of oak. High alcohol 15.8% Delicious taste of blackberries (1594 views) | | Tasted by Tartin on 8/4/2007: Cal & Jody hated this wine. Cal said he couldn't get the dirt off of his mouth, and Jody said it smelled and tasted likes weeds. I thought it was fine (wouldn't buy it, though). (1995 views) |
| Foxen Producer website
Bill Wathen and Dick Doré have been making wine together since 1985, when they founded Foxen Winery & Vineyard at the historic Rancho Tinaquaic in northern Santa Barbara County.
Since that time, their dedication has remained the same—the creation of very small-production, vineyard-designated wines using a "minimalist" approach to winemaking. The winery is named in memory of William Benjamin Foxen, an English sea captain and Dick's great-great grandfather, who came to Santa Barbara in the early 1800's. In 1837, this Santa Barbara County pioneer purchased the Rancho Tinaquaic, a Mexican Land Grant that originally totaled nearly 9000 acres and comprised most of what is now known as Foxen Canyon. Captain Foxen adopted the distinctive "anchor" as his ranch cattle brand, which has become a trademark of the winery. It is very fitting that FOXEN has made its home on the 2000-acre Rancho Tinaquaic, which remains in family hands.2005 Foxen Cabernet Franc Tinaquaic VineyardWINEMAKER COMMENTS: This has become a cult wine of sorts in the FOXEN world - probably because it is so distinct from most Californian Cabernet Francs. Consistent and telltale Tinaquaic aromas of smoked jalapeno (chipotle), blueberries and classic cigar box greet you. Our estate Cabernet Franc always displays amouth-feel that is think (but not fat), loaded with ripe plums, blueberries, tobacco, and firm tannins. Recently we paired this wine with a Gorgonzola-stuffed beef tenderloin "au poivre", and the match was phenomenal. I recommend decanting if you want to enjoy this wine sooner - rather than later. 300 cases.Cabernet Franc Varietal character (Appellation America) | Wines & Vines articleUSAAmerican wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.California2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson Central Coasthttp://www.ccwinegrowers.org/links.html
