Tasted by westcoastwannabe on 6/20/2009 & rated 85 points: This wine drank surprisingly better after a mediocre experience last year. Decanted almost 90 minutes before tasting. Taste consisted of dark berries and oak. Decent finish. Still not a memorable merlot. (1606 views)
Tasted by westcoastwannabe on 4/18/2008 & rated 82 points: This wine was just ok- we tasted some cherry, and the wine opened a little with some decanting. But it wasn't special in any way and there are many better merlots available for a lower price. (1644 views)
Tasted by pickhardt on 4/10/2008 & rated 82 points: I don't think the last bottle was bad. This is just not a special and/or impressive wine. Simple and uninspiring. (1645 views)
Tasted by pickhardt on 8/26/2007 & rated 80 points: I am usually a fan of Sattui merlots, but this missed the mark. My father-in-law could not drink it, describing it as too funky or musky. It definitely did not show any bright fruit. Maybe it was a bad bottle? (1701 views)
Tasted by rpang on 6/23/2007 & rated 84 points: Nose of dark cherries, strawberries, BUT there is plenty of oak. The oak is very strong and you cant help but notice it. On the palate, its very oaky. If you can get past the oak, the fruits are there. Plenty of dark cherries, plums and strawberries. Tannins are not overpowering either. Overall, very average wine for me. (1854 views)

Merlot

Merlot is a dark blue–colored wine grape variety, that is used as both a blending grape and for varietal wines. The name Merlot is thought to be a diminutive of merle, the French name for the blackbird, probably a reference to the color of the grape. Its softness and "fleshiness", combined with its earlier ripening, makes Merlot a popular grape for blending with the sterner, later-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon, which tends to be higher in tannin.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
