Community Tasting Notes (average 91.5 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 17 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by CheviotCellar on 9/3/2023 & rated 93 points: Dark, nearly black in glass. Nose is big and deep initially with wet soil and charcoal that blew off in the decanter after 15 minutes, leaving behind dark morello cherry, anise, fresh paint. Gorgeous, silky texture in mouth with sweet delicious cherry, a touch of bitter licorice that leads to the fine integrated tannins. Only knock is that the alcohol feels hot, even at cellar temp. Not too different from a big Napa cab. Just pair it and phase it correctly and the wine is impressive. 93-94 (559 views)
Tasted by CWilliam on 1/2/2023: Didn't take notes -really enjoyed this. continues to drink well with beautiful sweet cherry fruit, big tannins and rich acidity. 92-93 range. (1106 views)
Tasted by CWilliam on 6/4/2022: PNP and enjoyed over 2 nights (great on night 2). Black in the glass. Sweet cherry, licorice, tobacco and dark chocolate on the nose. Palate had similar profile. Full body, high tannins, medium+ acidity and rich, long finish. Loved this. 93+ (1300 views)
Tasted by rmalloy on 4/9/2022 & rated 92 points: Very good. Dense and tannic — and a little too oaky at the moment — but approachable due to the core of sweet black fruit. This wine needs more time for the oak to integrate and the tannins to soften. (1158 views)
Tasted by CWilliam on 1/9/2022 & rated 92 points: So tasty - notes from PNP. Dark red color. Sweet cherry, bing cherry, baking spice & red licorice on nose. Palate had similar profile. full body, high tannins, medium+ acidity and long finish - really enjoyed this but fruit primary today - should add complexity over time. 92-93+

Would buy again. (1301 views)
Tasted by jpp10780 on 11/2/2021 & rated 91 points: Obviously way too young to drink but I needed an emergency wine for pizza night. BIG wine with tannins that were certainly present but frankly, less than I feared. I have no doubt that this will age gracefully and be a delicious sagrantino in perhaps ten years. Less rustic and not modern per se, but definitely smooth. Not similar to a Bea Pagliaro if that helps. Picked up on sale for $17-18 if I recall which was a steal. (1200 views)
Tasted by rmalloy on 7/22/2021 & rated 92 points: Tastes noble and serious. Tannic, oaky, balsamic. I have struggled to identify more precise tasting notes, partly due to the present overtness of the oak. I think this wine deserves many more years of bottle age to allow the oak to integrate and the tannins to soften. (1201 views)
Tasted by RichardP on 2/28/2021 & rated 92 points: Plum and camphor on the nose. On the palate, currant, plum, blackberry, and notes of savory spice and earth on the medium finish, with strong tannins and strong acidity. This is very young, with many years to go, although it's drinkable now if you enjoy tannins. This was a very good to excellent value at about $45. (1254 views)
Tasted by GTFreek on 9/22/2020: Medium plus nose shows violets, blood iron, black plums, fresh leather, fig. Palate is massive, spicy, concentrated black fruits, baking spice, very very dry. Finish is dominated by the tannins. Lots of flavor, needs time (this was opened a day ago) or big fatty food. Cool wine though. (1314 views)

Arnaldo-Caprai

Producer website The Caprai winery and vineyards lie on the hillside below the Umbrian hilltop town of Montefalco. Founded in 1971 by Arnaldo-Caprai Caprai, and now in the hands of his son Marco, the estate has become the leading producer of Sagrantino wines in the region. Sagrantino shows no resemblance to any of Italy's other grape varieties, and is almost exclusive to the region of Montefalco - it is thick-skinned, small bunched and small-berried, but big in every other way: colour, tannins, acids, extracts, and sugars.

Sagrantino

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sagrantino is an Italian grape variety that is indigenous to the region of Umbria in Central Italy, and makes some of that region's most distinctive wines.

It is grown primarily in the village of Montefalco and its surrounding areas, with only 250 acres (1.0 km2) dedicated to the grape in the hands of about 25 producers. With such small production, the wine is not widely known outside of Italy, even though it was granted DOCG status in 1991.

The origins of the grape are widely disputed, but what is known is that it was used primarily for dessert wines for many years, the grape being dried in the passito style, much like a Recioto di Valpolicella. At some point, the wines were made in a dry style, and that is how they are primarily produced today.

The grape is one of the most tannic varieties in the world, and creates wines that are inky purple with an almost-black center. The bouquet is one of dark, brooding red fruits with hints of plum, cinnamon, and earth.

The Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG requires 100 percent sagrantino used, with a required 29 months aging before release. Sagrantino is of excellent storability.

A more approachable and affordable Montefalco Rosso usually contains only 10-15% sagrantino and allows up to 70 percent sangiovese and other grapes in the blend.

A passito is still made, a thick, syrupy wine with raisin and blueberry qualities. The alcohol content is around 14 percent.
