Tasted by BHRH on 9/29/2023 & rated 92 points: Decanted 3 hours - a fair amount of fine sludge. Big grenache aromas of searing raspberries and some wild strawberry. Enormous palate of sweet black cherry and raspberry fruit, some smoke, a bit of minerally earth with plenty of acidity on the finish that says this has a easy 3-5 years at prime. Not for the faint of heart, but totally delicious and hedonistic. 92-93 (216 views)
Tasted by Whine-oh on 7/29/2023 & rated 94 points: Ride to a wine dinner with friends. My favorite red of the night. Double decanted. Minimal breaking. Plenty of sediment. Little angular and punchy on first pour. Several hours later settled down nicely. Lots of earth on the nose still bright fruit and fresh acidity on palate. Good complexity on taste. good with food. Tannins still notable. Much more refined on night too, still very much alive. A joy to drink. Plenty of life left in it. (304 views)
Tasted by Elwoodr on 10/19/2021 & rated 93 points: One of my last bottles. Blackberry and sage. Very light and delicious with some mushroom/forest floor notes. This is what I want CDP to taste like. After so many port fruit bombs this one is truly Burgundian. (915 views)
Tasted by drmarclevine on 9/12/2021 & rated 91 points: Solid CdP. Big whiffs of cherry Coke, wine-stained wood, and camphor emerge after about 30 minutes of air. Opens nicely in the mouth with dark raspberry, currants, and even a hint of eucalyptus providing some complexity. Still a slight tannic prickle in the back but things are mostly resolved. Medium weight with a medium/long finish. Just right for its type though the freshness is starting to subside. Drink now or within the next year or two. (904 views)
Tasted by WineDoctors on 3/12/2021 & rated 93 points: Garrigue. Garnet, color to rim. Just ripe blackerry. Medium acid, cassis, thyme, long finish with satin tannins. With roasted root vegetables. Sublime. Interesting ABV in 2005 at 14.5% (1118 views)
Tasted by La Cave d'Argent on 12/20/2019 & rated 95 points: Olivier Hillaire's Petits Pieds d'Armand is a 100% Grenache bottling sourced from an old vine parcel in La Crau. At 14 years of age, the 2005 offers a core of ripe bramble fruits, crème de cassis, Asian spices, Provençal herbs and tapenade. Medium-to-full-bodied, freshly acidic, seamlessly alcoholic (14.5%) and with silky-textured tannins, it retains impressive mid-palate density and finishes long. This pristinely cellared bottle shows the wine to be quite youthful. Comparably cellared bottles should provide pleasure for several more years. Drink now-2025. (1476 views)
Tasted by rfras on 9/5/2017 & rated 93 points: Decanted for 90 minutes. Deep red color and luscious texture. Cherry flavors mixed with some spice overtones. Long lingering finish that made you want more. There was some sediment in the bottle. (1938 views)
Tasted by cdp1276 on 7/28/2017 & rated 93 points: Interesting French style Chateauneuf de Pape with a distinct minerality and saline profile. Certainly needs a meal of grilled or cured meats to complement. (1670 views)
Tasted by ctjared on 2/28/2017: consistent (1728 views)
Tasted by rmalloy on 9/11/2016 & rated 95 points: The best pure Grenache wine I've ever had. Exciting nose of barbecue, cedar, tapenade, and ripe blackberry. I love how the strong oak is balanced with the meaty fruit. Drink or hold. (1929 views)
Tasted by La Cave d'Argent on 5/29/2016 & rated 96 points: Sourced from an old vine parcel in La Crau, the Petits Pieds d'Armand is Olivier Hillaire's 100% Grenache bottling that seems to deliver the goods year in and year out. Now at 11 years of age, the 2005 iteration offers mesmorizing aromas of bramble fruits, crème de cassis, loamy earth, anise and tapenade. Medium-to-full-bodied, freshly acidic, seamlessly alcoholic (14.5%) and with silky-textured tannins, it delivers a flavor payload that mirrors the aromas. Dense in the middle and finishing long, this luscious Châteauneuf is nothing short of classic in quality. It should provide pleasure for several more years. Drink now-2025. (2247 views)
Tasted by rbsmith8 on 6/11/2015: Sampled at CNP tasting. Thought it was best in show. (1964 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 6/7/2015: Second Sunday Group: 2005 Chateauneuf-du-Pape (Barb's): Aromas of pepper, red fruit and rubber. Flavors of dark fruit and pepper. As it sits, it develops a very weird cheese-like aroma and becomes sour on the palate. I assumed this to be a flawed bottle so no score from me. In addition to Domino's #7, I know it received at least one 6th place vote, but in order to have 77 points from the group, it had to have a few higher votes too- very odd.

My #8, Domino's #7
Group #8, 77 pts (2306 views)
Tasted by ctjared on 2/1/2015: decent, but not my favorite. have fallen out of love with grenache (1696 views)
Tasted by JuniorSamples on 6/20/2014 & rated 93 points: First 2005 CDP I've opened from stash. After 20 minute decant, deep garnet in the glass. Aromatic nose, with cherries, licorice and coffee. Medium bodied. Cherry, spice and raspberry on the palate. Noticeable alcohol content and tannins not yet resolved at all, but still pleasant. Solid finish.

This seems to have lots of legs left for aging, and plenty of room to get better. Very encouraging. Probably will wait another six months before touching more of the 2005s. (2030 views)
Tasted by Seafoam Manor on 3/7/2014 & rated 92 points: This needs a short decant. From an initial pop and pour, this had an immediate cough syrup note and a bitterness on the finish that screamed grenache, which had me a little worried. It took about 30-45 minutes for this to blow off and round into a pure expression of ripe fruit. Big bright raspberry and a great spiciness that grew the longer it was open. Like most of the '05's I've had, it still maintains a tannic structure, but it is pretty much fully integrated. Very good wine. (1843 views)
Tasted by ecnemergut on 12/30/2012 & rated 97 points: I think this could be one of the best wines I've had this year - certainly the best CNdP. Wonderful nose of fruit with loads of raspberry. Very full on the palate with a long delicious finish. Still with some tannic bite so I think this wine will age for much longer. Sadly, this was my last bottle... (2142 views)
Tasted by slywka7 on 10/28/2012 & rated 92 points: This was lovely and mature. (1860 views)
Tasted by ecnemergut on 12/24/2011 & rated 94 points: Red fruit nose with some tobacco. Medium-bodied with a an incredible blast of red cherry. Wonderfully long finish (2580 views)
Tasted by mmcdds on 12/18/2011 & rated 90 points: Dark stewed fruit, toast and licorice on the nose that follow through on the palate with some cedar notes creeping in. Full bodied but with a fairly soft mouthfeel. Well integrated, dusty tannins on the med finish. Nice, but I was expecting more. (2290 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 11/23/2007 & rated 90 points: SWILL November Tasting - Southern Rhone (win's house in Southlake, TX): WIML90

Tasted November 23, 2007. Opened and served immediately. Dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of melted black licorice, roasted meat, sliced plums and some florals. Flavors of rich berries, currants and licorice. Vibrant acidity, firm tannins, full body. Hold. (4277 views)
Tasted by duchamp on 10/27/2007 & rated 93 points: Red Carpet Wine (Tasting) - Inky, you can smell the tannins, very primary nose with hints of plum, earth, red fruit and lilacs, palate goes from strong to strong and keeps building, is approachable now but can only improve with time

Note: 11/24/15
Still rather primary with bright but slightly fading fruit, drink up (2942 views)
Tasted by EMichels on 10/26/2007 & rated 89 points: Red Carpet Wine Tasting: An odd sugar cane nose; Slight pepper (3486 views)
Tasted by peternelson on 9/15/2007 & rated 91 points: Wine X: Pepper, ZEST, gum, hint spice; spicy peppery mth, more cherries than above, long fin., but not keen on these flavors. (1781 views)
Tasted by La Cave d'Argent on 9/7/2007 & rated 96 points: Tasted unblinded at the Vintage Wines, Ltd. wine bar. Bright disc. Opaque black/purple robe with purple rim. The nose on this wine is amazing. Explosive aromas floral aromas are what hit you first, followed by more typical raspberry, creme de cassis, nutmeg and earth. Full-bodied on the palate, with low-to-medium acidity, big ripe tannins and flavors which mirror the nose. Long, long finish. This is a gem! I had no intention of purchasing this wine, but was compelled to cellar a few bottles after this taste. (2749 views)

(Hillaire Petits Pied D' Armand) Olivier Hillaire Dear Friends, I just departed from Avignon and I’ve seen quite a few offers for these in the US (due to the Wine Spectator reviews from last week) - they deserve every accolade. I’m glad to see a producer this small receive the recognition he deserves as he does not have the same ability to market his wines as the larger producers. As a group, these are among the very best wines of the vintage and they have to be some of the more impressive cuvees still priced within reason. Both of these show a clarity, focus and depth I found lacking in many 2005 CdP’s and the alcohol is woven in an expert fashion - they are focused on almost surreal aromatics that are so pure and defined it makes you want to cellar the wines to see how they will evolve. This is a producer that has treated his regular cuvee as his best effort and kept the price reasonable (unlike the trend where many producers are diluting their regular cuvees in favor of more material, and money, for the “luxury” cuvees). Olivier Hillaire takes the material for his CdP from his best lots and it’s obvious when you smell and taste the wine. As a comparison, I found myself having a tough time recommending the regular cuvees from many of Hillaire’s competitors (the prices are just too high for the quality level) but not here - this wine is at the level of the best wines in the region. This is probably because Hillarie’s Petits Pieds d’Armand is from a specific parcel and it does not affect the quality of the regular wine. I’ve seen quite a few offers for these from US sources at prices that have made me shake my head so I thought it was time for our own - all with perfect provenance directly from the source... 2005 Olivier Hillaire Chateauneuf-du-Pape EXTREMELY LIMITED (this is not Vignerons de St. Hillaire) 2005 Olivier Hillaire Chateauneuf-du-Pape "Les Petits Pieds d'Armand" Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Rhone7810 Rhone7820

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
