Community Tasting Notes (average 95 pts. and median of 95 pts. in 4 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Nanda on 7/31/2021 & rated 95 points: This pulverized low expectations. An ethereal, enchanting nose that just keeps pulling you back in. That perfect meaty, earthy, smoky mature Syrah aroma with a Burgundian flare. Super complex and meaty with plenty of freshness, lift and persistence. Held on strong for a couple of hours, so should hold if you happen to have any in the cellar. (451 views)
Tasted by acyso on 7/29/2021 & rated 95 points: Dinner at Osteria Langhe (Chicago, IL): This was another flyer that I bought based on its sheer rarity. I didn't like this when it was opened, as it felt a little stinky and the palate was thin and acidic. But this just got better as the night wore on (despite, or in spite of, my whingeing that this wasn't a very good bottle). The fruit was fully on the red side of the spectrum, with just a hint of olive (though I would have liked more). Fully resolved with high acidity on the palate, but also no overt danger signs of decline. (1143 views)
Tasted by Aravind Asok on 7/8/2020: A perfect aged syrah for my palate. Popped the cork with a Durand, and the nose just exploded from the bottle. Words will not do justice to the aromatic complexity and the intensity on the palate. This is unequivocally the best wine I've had this year, and maybe one of the best wines I've ever drank in my life. (299 views)
Tasted by Aravind Asok on 12/17/2017: Whoa. Cork soaked through to about 1mm from the end, but came out in a single piece. What a surprise and one of the best bottles I've had this year. I gave this even odds to be flawed, but it was stunning. Just amazing nose of smoky bbq, cedar, toast, olive brine and game; classic and entirely secondary/tertiary. On the palate, acidity still present, giving the saline dried red fruit and charred meat a nice kick. Mouthfilling, and leaning in a bbqed meat direction with some dry tannin hanging on for the finish. This bottle was vibrant and complex, with a peppery bbq note that hangs around in the mouth for a while. (502 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

Hermitage

Guide to Hermitage wine Guide to Cote Rotie - Read about the Northern Rhone Valley

• The appellation stretches over 3 communes in the Drôme "département" : Tain-l'Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage and Larnage.

• The soils are a combination of granite with alluvial quaternary delta deposits, and, on the eastern side, Pliocene clay. This diversity explains the numerous different names given to vineyard plots within the appellation : Bessards, Greffieux, Méal, Roucoule, Beaumes, etc.

• The meso-climate provides shelter from the north winds, where the majority of the slopes is well exposed, facing south.

•The vineyards area adds up to 134 hectares/331 acres, with an annual production of 3,635 hectoliters. Authorized maximum yield is 40 hectoliters/hectare (2.3 US tons/acres).

• Grape varieties : Syrah (an addition of up to 15% of Marsanne or Roussanne is allowed).
