| Community Tasting Notes (average 91.7 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 29 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by JERB on 3/1/2024 & rated 92 points: Decanted for 1.5 hours. Gorgeous nose of dark cherries and strawberries with some spicy forest things going on as well. Palate was similar and had, as other notes have mentioned, a creaminess to it. Excellent wine that is drinking well right now but will likely only get better with a couple of more years in the bottle. (560 views) | | Tasted by rwerner on 1/10/2024 & rated 93 points: Dark cherries nose and with the same on the mouth along with flavors of coco, and coffee with a long delicious finish with soft tannins. (720 views) | | Tasted by VAGenius on 9/18/2023 & rated 92 points: 30 minute decant. No detailed notes - it was polished and balanced but quite spicy on the finish. We enjoyed it and the bottle was almost gone before we realized we didn't have any notes! (885 views) | | Tasted by B&Dg on 1/9/2023 & rated 87 points: Not bad. (1297 views) | | Tasted by kirbo1967 on 12/18/2022 & rated 93 points: Very balanced wine. Ready now with another few to go. No rush but you can pnp now. Cheers (1115 views) | | Tasted by VAVintner on 4/17/2022 & rated 92 points: Good but will get much better in 5 yrs (1567 views) | | Tasted by VAGenius on 9/14/2021 & rated 89 points: Nose of fresh cut spruce and red fruits. Red fruits, rocky notes, and slightly bitter herbal notions race quickly across the tongue with lively acidity, flowing into a pronounced cherry tang, pine, and spice finish. Drinks smooth and uncomplicated. (668 views) | | Tasted by Mike Dildine on 8/25/2021 & rated 93 points: 14.5% abv. Dark ruby, very aromatic. Dark cherry, black pepper, ripe plum, some floral overtones and dark chocolate. Excellent depth and length. Good now, but better in 3-5 years. A very distinctive wine from a small, old, mixed black vineyard. Tasty and fascinating. (2349 views) | | Tasted by VAVintner on 4/22/2021 & rated 93 points: Juicy fruit but still balanced acid and med fine tannin. This a big and begging for steak or hearty rich sauces. (2153 views) | | Tasted by purely on 4/12/2021 & rated 98 points: 11/20 RELEASE The nose is bright, sticky and spice kissed with polished notes of wet stone, smoked meat, and spruce. The palate entry is silky, solid black fruit with supple tobacco and spice. A beautiful structure of persistent grilled meat and violet. Drink 2021 - 2030. (1950 views) | | Tasted by WineGold on 1/31/2021 & rated 92 points: Very dark and interesting. From the bottle: a blend of Mourvèdre, petite Sirah, Syrah, peloursin, cirgnan, and Alicante Bouschet. We drink a lot of wine, but we’ve never heard of some of these varietals! On the nose there is black and blue fruit, pepper, and bacon. The palate is big and busy, with some difficulty picking specific characteristics due to the large number of varietals involved. I pick out dark fruit, pepper, leather, a touch of cured meat in the background, and a long, lasting finish. (2157 views) | | Tasted by Matt Scott on 12/12/2020 & rated 95 points: The nose is ridiculously good, with dried strawberries, lilacs, crushed rock, kirsch, wild game and button mushrooms. The texture is almost creamy, with fine tannins and an a welcomed sappiness. So long, as it slowly unfolds on your palate. So unique and stunning. Wait a year, or decant. There’s an Indian spice aspect throughout, and a medium to full body. Drink 2022 - 2032. (2657 views) | | Tasted by Dionysusx on 11/16/2020 & rated 93 points: This wine is still an infant but already very expressive. Plenty of peppery zest. Dark cherry, currant, cassis, subtle mocha notes all supported by a prominent earth and mineral foundation. The fruit flavors are a bit muted right now. Will undoubtedly take the forefront as the wine ages. A bold blend. (1703 views) | | Only displaying the 25 most recent notes - click to see all notes for this wine... |

2018 Carlisle Two AcresRelease Letter:
On October 15th, we picked the Petite Sirah, Peloursin, and Syrah from Two Acres, cofermenting them as a single lot. On October 22nd, we went back for the Mourvèdre, Carignan, and Alicante Bouschet. Like the first pick, the varieties in the second pick were indigenously cofermented, using approximately 25% whole cluster. Interestingly, when it came time for blending trials, we found we greatly preferred the second pick with none of the first pick blended into it. Hence, a very Mourvèdre-y Two Acres! Twenty percent new French oak. As usual, unfined and unfiltered.
Tasting Note: Medium-dark ruby-garnet. Cherries, cured meat, Damask rose, and forest floor. Oh my! I cannot recall a better smelling Two Acres. On the palate, that luxurious, enveloping Two Acres mouthfeel (reminds me of Häagen Dazs!) with flavors of kirsch, blood orange, game, and brown spices. Fine-grained tannins in the lengthy finish indicate a long life ahead but damn, if this isn’t ever delicious right now. Enjoy from 2022 (if you like your wines young and fresh) to 2032 (if you prefer more secondary characteristics from aging).Carlisle Two AcresTwo Acres – Russian River Valley
A true gem in Sonoma County! There is little old-vine Mourvèdre in Sonoma County. Yet, here we have two acres of predominantly mourvèdre planted in 1910. Other varieties planted include Petite Sirah (10%), Syrah (6%), Carignane (4%), Peloursin (3%), and Alicante Bouschet (2%). There are also a few zinfandel vines in addition to nine whites of a variety called Helena (a white cross of Zinfandel and Mondeuse Noir).
This vineyard was on the brink of death when we took it over in 1996 but slowly and surely we have brought it back to life. We completed its renovation in 2003 by replacing all missing vines. Most of the replants were Mourvèdre but we did include a few syrah vines.Red Rhone Blend Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.
A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce. USAAmerican wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.California2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson Sonoma CountyMendocino CountyRussian River Valley Russian River Valley Winegrowers Association | Wikipedia |
