Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 12/14/2023: Smells very pretty with a red cherry note and then a little bit of green to it. Darn that really comes together well. Tasty taste. (598 views)
Tasted by rjm_va on 11/4/2023 & rated 91 points: Oaky and chewey (358 views)
Tasted by silton on 1/15/2023 & rated 91 points: Young but accessible. Comparable to Leeuwin Art Series Cab as a nice QPR on a more herbaceous profile. Drink with a decant or hold 3-5 years. (955 views)
Tasted by iamkimdaye on 12/5/2021 & rated 83 points: Nice Bordeaux style c.s. blended red wine (1573 views)
Tasted by jskuek on 4/17/2021 & rated 91 points: Fuller bodied compare to the 2016 (elegant), not surprising the 2017 has 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot and 6% Malbec... (1820 views)

Woodlands

Producer Website

Woodlands is a ten hectare vineyard located in the Willyabrup region of Margaret River in Western Australia.

Established in 1973 by David and Heather Watson, Woodlands remains family owned and operated. Woodlands came to fame early on with the release of our 1981 ‘Andrew' Cabernet Sauvignon which took out several major awards.

However, in 1992 Woodlands production virtually ceased while David and Heather focused on raising their children and fruit was sold to other high profile producers in the region.

In 1999, children grown, Woodlands began to produce wines again, making the most of its fully mature vines.

Woodlands now has an annual production of 8000 cases, specializing in red wine, and is family operated. David's son Stuart has been the winemaker at Woodlands since 2002.

Winemaking is minimalist at Woodlands, the emphasis being on small open ferments and excellent barrel selection.

2017 Woodlands Margaret

From The Producer

2017 presented some unusual weather patterns throughout the region given the ‘new normal’ of warmer drier seasons. We experienced the coldest September - October period in 11 years, which delayed the start of the growing season. Summer was mild with La Nina conditions keeping the temperatures low, avoiding any extremes of heat. Flowering was slow and late, around 2-3 weeks later than normal. With a ripening period more in line with the historical phenology of the region, 2017 reds are absolutely classic in their fruit profile and tannin.

Woodlands ‘Margaret’ is sourced entirely from the Woodlands Vineyard. The Cabernet Sauvignon portion comes from a slope on the south of Woodlands that wraps around a 90-degree radius from east to north. The fruit on this slope receives a great deal of direct sunlight from morning to mid-afternoon, leading to rich full-bodied wines.

Blend : 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot and 6% Malbec

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.
