Tasted by mzimberg on 12/16/2022 & rated 90 points: Pretty and luxuriously transparent purple. Interesting aromas of cloves, savory meats and earth. Some nice red cherry and pine sap to go with its bakers chocolate and Turkish coffee flavors. Easy to drink palate with surprising depth and nice lift. (765 views)
Tasted by Wildgrant on 12/7/2022: Sometimes I hit a string of reds that I don't like and I start to wonder if there's something the matter with my taste buds. I hope that this is a turning point. A nice pleasing light red, tastes of cherries and reminds me of gamay. Good with veal and ricotta meatballs in tomato sauce. (660 views)
Tasted by Philolesen on 10/9/2022 & rated 88 points: Very nice Barbera. Good structure, yet light and complex. I would buy more. A very good indication of how his entry level Barolo's are. (829 views)
Tasted by Brendel on 6/22/2022 & rated 84 points: Nose: Funk, medium leather, peppers, violet; tomato juice; nose suggests a bolder and heavier bodied wine.
Palate: yummy, Merlot-like sweetness of black cherries, tint of licorice (personally a dislike), velvety coating mouthfeel, medium acidity, impressively integrated tannins, very slight savory note of salami, chorizo and tomato; heavy fruity/savory.
Finish: short to medium finish.

For price paid, $25 in the US, this is not worth it. It would be okay at $15, although we vastly prefer the Vajra Langhe Rosso at that price. (1008 views)
Tasted by SMJennings61 on 6/1/2022: Very average (987 views)
Tasted by ShakinSwedens on 2/21/2022: Penultimate bottle from case bought direct from winery at the start of the pandemic. A little evolution since that point, but I think another year will finish this bottle’s upbringing given day 2 is a clearer purer expression than day 1. On day two we still have remarkable freshness and zing, beautiful dark cherry, bramble berry and lip smacking acidity with none of the vanilla note it had yesterday. This is a simple thing done well- and at the price I paid (12 Euro plus shipping) that should be savoured. Perhaps my last bottle should be opened when this pandemic is firmly in the rear view as this is a wine that exemplifies a simple straightforward zest for life. Root day, for the record! (734 views)
Tasted by Vinnut on 1/5/2022 & rated 88 points: Dark reddish garnet in color, bordering on opaque. Full, forward & attractive nose of ripe red fruit aromas of blueberries, cherries & mulberries with overtones of earthy/dusty & floral notes of violets, herbs, spices, some cocoa & minerals. Medium bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, ripe fruit flavors of red cherries, blackberries & plums, earthy, spices & minerals. Lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present with decanting & extended airing but has potential for further development with several additional years of aging. (840 views)
Tasted by sjw_11 on 10/10/2021 & rated 91 points: No formal notes. Relatively lean/tart. Pleasant but not particularly memorable. 86-87pts (826 views)
Tasted by Jzizzle on 8/17/2021 & rated 89 points: Tart, pretty light, nice red fruit with spice and even some salami. Nice, but not everything I was hoping for... (703 views)
Tasted by FjordogFjell on 1/22/2021 & rated 86 points: PnP Fersk lukt av brøddeig, blomster og barbera. Klar enkel litt parfymert frukt med syrlig ettersmak. Etter noen timer: fersk og parfymert , fast (1183 views)
Tasted by GL Rhone on 11/23/2020 & rated 90 points: Bright nose, with red fruit, cherry and a little back note of leather. Really vibrant palate, pure sweet red fruits, lots of acidity but nicely balanced by the brightness of the fruit. Light bodied, just a faint peek of heat on the finish. Really quite a fine expression of barbera, best I’ve had in a while (1001 views)

Massolino

Established in 1896, by Giovanni Massolino, the winery has been dedicated to the production of great wines from the Langhe area of Piedmont for four generations. It was Giovanni’s son Giuseppe, one of the founders of the Consortium for the Defense of Barolo and Barbaresco, to construct the cellar located in Serralunga d’Alba, one of the most important villages in the production of Barolo DOCG. Giuseppe’s sons, Giovanni and Renato, divided the responsibility for the vineyards and cellar management, also acquiring some of the most prestigious cru vineyard sites in Serralunga d’Alba. Giovanni’s sons Franco and Roberto, both winemakers, joined the family business in the nineties and oversee the production.

The Massolino winery produces about 120,000 bottles each year, including Chardonnay, Barbera d’Alba, Nebbiolo d’Alba, Moscato d’Asti, and Barolo. The winemaking style is classically ‘traditional,’ as evidenced by the use of cement fermentation tanks and large Slavonian oak casks for ageing, however more modern techniques and technologies are also employed resulting in incredibly clean, elegant wines, perfectly respecting the characteristics of the autochthonous grape varieties and the territory. Over the years, the name Massolino has become synonymous with robust, concentrated and well-structured Barolo, celebrated around the world.

Massolino produces one classic Barolo and, with the addition of the most recently acquired vineyard in Castiglione Falletto, four Cru Barolo wines: Parussi, Parafada, Margheria, and Vigna Rionda.

“As a family tradition we search for the highest quality with full respect for the environment and implement everything necessary to produce wines which express the characteristics of our wonderful land.”
– Franco Massolino

Barbera

Varietal character (Appellation America)
Varietal character (Wikipedia German)
Varietal character (Wikipedia English)
Barbera is a red wine variety, originally from Italy, which is best known as the second-most important Piedmontese variety after Nebbiolo. The wines made of this grape are mainly the everyday drinking wines of the region. The main appellations producing Barbera are Asti and Alba.

Barbera - The most widely grown red wine grape of Piedmont and Southern Lombardy, most famously around the towns of Asti and Alba, and Pavia. The wines of Barbera were once simply "what you drank while waiting for the Barolo to be ready." With a new generation of wine makers, this is no longer the case. The wines are now meticulously vinified, aged Barbera gets the name "Barbera Superiore" (Superior Barbera), sometimes aged in French barrique becoming "Barbera Barricato", and intended for the international market. The wine has bright cherry fruit, a very dark color, and a food-friendly acidity.

Alba

Consorzio di Tutela Barolo Barbaresco Alba Langhe e Roero

Alba is a town and comune of Piedmont, Italy, in the province of Cuneo. It is considered the capital of the hilly area of Langhe, and is famous for the white truffle, peach and wine production. Piedmont is in the Northwestern region of Italy, bordering France and Switzerland. Piedmont is predominantly a plain where the water flows from the Swiss and French Alps to form the headwaters of the Po river. The major wine producing areas are in the southern portion of the region in the hills known as the "Langhe". Here the people speak a dialect that is 1/3 French and 2/3 Italian that portrays their historical roots. Their cuisine is one of the most creative and interesting in Italy. Nebbiolo is the King grape here, producing Barolo and Barbaresco. In addition, the Barbera and Dolcetto are the workhorse grapes that produce the largest quantity of wine. Piedmont is predominantly a red wine producing area. There are a few whites made in Piedmont, and the Moscato grape produces a large volume of sweet, semi-sweet and sparkling wines as well.
