Community Tasting Notes (average 92.4 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 12 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Portland Seth on 7/3/2023 & rated 93 points: My first Carter wine. Concentrated, heavy, 15% abv. Despite that a very restrained and pleasant nose of oakmoss and cedar. It's on the palate that it lumbers. Cassis, charcoal, oak spice and vanilla. That strong vanilla note from new oak rubs me the wrong way but it should integrate with another 5 years or so. If this is your jam let me recommend Corliss from WA which drinks better and costs only $90.

I bought two bottles each of 6 different Carter '18 offerings with the idea of drinking one set young and the other set old, but based on this one bottle I'm leaning towards letting them all rest until 2028. Any and all advice welcome. (835 views)
Tasted by TampaMark on 1/29/2023 & rated 87 points: I agree with alot of the notes of this wine. Definitely the least enjoyable Carter I have experienced. Not terrible but not at the level I think we all expect. No QPR at all. (1037 views)
Tasted by Takeshi on 12/28/2021 & rated 94 points: Opened up really well. Lots of spices and minerals , licorice, creme de cassis. Classic Napa cab. (1693 views)
Tasted by msuwine on 12/3/2021 & rated 92 points: This ripe and extracted Cabernet is just a bit too much for me; similar to the 2016 at the three-year mark, the 2018 tastes syrupy, fruity, and not much else. I've never enjoyed the Weitz as much as the OG or Verdad, but I loved almost the entire Carter lineup in the 2012-2015 vintages. Now... dunno... but this particular wine is too boozy to be that impressive (or even fun!?) for me.

Inky red in color and full (full) in body, the wine smells like the cherry festival has stumbled into town (e.g., pie cherry, candied cherry, cherry liqueur), with notes of black licorice and mochacino (or some other middle schooler Starbucks concoction). The flavors are as sweet as they are seamless, with notes of boysenberry, Hershey bar, and coffee bean, with a sugary and brief finish. This got better at the three-hour mark, so maybe bottle age will help this wine turn the corner. 14.9% alcohol. 92 at the moment. (2664 views)
Tasted by Mark1npt on 7/14/2021 & rated 94 points: Carol says 93, which once again, is uncanny........she has no access to see the scores on here, but I'm giving it a 94 with an outside chance at a 95.

This is thick and full of cassis from the pnp.....takes a good 2 hours to integrate, even out, and hit its stride. Classic cab nose in the glass...graphite, forest floor out the wazoo. Dark fruited and med heavy in the mouth, it has glide and well integrated acidity to go along with its black fruit and slightly herbal components. This feels so much more black fruited than the very poor '17 red fruited Weitz version, OMG! There's a strong tobacco component in play with a touch of iron. This is a really nice wine, starting to drink really well, IMO. Carol says buy more if it's under $100.....I laugh and say $150. She says no......I'm awfully tempted. The finish is just a tad short...... (4184 views)
Tasted by Yack Man on 9/26/2020 & rated 93 points: This 2018 is a good and solid wine but not as advanced in progression when compared to the 2015 and 2016 vintages. A Cab has a prominent nose and deep dark reddish purple color. On the palate, dark fruit more dark cherry, currant and cranberry notes, a wine that is youthful and amped up right now. This 2018 shows solid depth with a nice mouth feel that lingers, yet it is tightly coiled showing acidity and needs bottle time to settle down and integrate further. Time will tell if this wine this vintage will approach the 2015 and 2016 vintages but the 2018 is not there at this point.

Tasted by Cristal2000 on 8/2/2020 & rated 93 points: 2018 Carter Wines: This is the most overtly fruity of the 18 Carter offerings I have tasted. It is missing the complexity, depth of flavor and overall fruit quality of its Beckstoffer siblings.

Like all these Carter wines, it will need some time to calm down and blow off some of the alcohol. Blackberries, redcurrant, spice box and some nice floral aromas on the nose. A bit redder fruit than the others, this shows the exceptional mouthfeel of all the Carter offerings. Full bodied with great layering, this is a big wine with tons of fruit. Finishes well, but not on the level of the others. (4245 views)
Tasted by ffzhang on 6/14/2020 & rated 93 points: Tasted at Carter Cellars -

Intense, higher acidity, plush tannins, long finish, alcohol is well integrated. Jammy and spicy notes of red currant, red cherry, blackcurrant, cassis, toast, cedar, baking spices, green bell pepper.

I personally feel that it's slightly lacking compared to the previous vintages of Maybach Materium that I've had. (2247 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
