Tasted by crazywineguy on 6/20/2021 & rated 93 points: Little change to my last note. Some wines just resonate with you, right? Irvine Grand Merlot, Bannockburn chardonnay, Mosel riesling, 20 year old Sauternes. Well this one resonates for me. I smell it and its like I'm home or I'm greeting a old friend once again. Unique leather and earth profile and complex tertiary notes. Happy I still have a case to go. (411 views)
Tasted by crazywineguy on 8/31/2019 & rated 94 points: Smooth, intense tertiary wine. Leather, leather and more leather. Just outstanding. Extremely long finish. Everyone at the table thought this was WOTN. (586 views)
Tasted by crazywineguy on 7/15/2017 & rated 95 points: What a fantastic wine. Red edge, deep opaque centre, perfect cork with just end rim staining. Nose shows old leather, plums and varnish, warmth and age elements. In the mouth this strikes as a wine of quality and breeding and age. There are the elements detected on the aroma plus a silkiness/slipperiness and almost a green whole-bunch edge but smooth with no angles to the fruit/acid/tannin balance. Real depth to the wine and a long finish characterised by that sweet leather varnish. 16 years has seen it enter well the tertiary flavour profile and I think it can keep this aspect together for 4-10 years depending on cork and cellaring conditions. This wine goes so well with the heavier elements of Japanese cuisine, the fruit core marrying well to the umami accented dishes.
With decanting it started to kick up a level in acidity and a stronger more minerally finish, remarkably. This is a sign of a wine with some stuffing left. Geelong shiraz at its best. (1192 views)
Tasted by esfesq on 8/12/2014 & rated 92 points: Showing beautifully right now, with an inky purplish color with some hints of ruby -- semi mature color but perfumed right out of the bottle. The red fruit seemed to have a dried quality, it had some sweet spice, smoke (later developed into almost a scorched Earth note), leather, minerals, earthy with some menthol/cough medicine notes which kept evolving and changing over the course of the evening. Later, it fattened up with tons of cherry fruit and cassis, loamy and rich. The finish was smooth all night, with a nice silky tannic structure that provided a very balanced framework without being intrusive. Never really tasted like a Shiraz, but a very impressive wine.  Tasted by StewartWent on 7/4/2014 & rated 90 points: Plain amazing that this can be bought as a genuine cellar release in the mid $30s. True to region with spice, acid, drying fruits and a little game. Spicy acid drives very good length. Quite Northern Rhone for mine. Drink now. (2176 views)
Tasted by G.M. on 1/18/2014 & rated 93 points: Deep garnet. Really good nose with a lot going on. Meaty, plum and violets, touch Bretty, leather, cigar box. Great stuff. Palate follows the nose, although perhaps without quite the level of intrigue. No unpleasant rhubarb elements that I've tasted in some Geelong shiraz. Silky and balanced with an on-point but not tremendously long finish. Very enjoyable. (93 Excellent wine) (2106 views)
Tasted by Flashman2110 on 6/14/2013: Smooth silky tannins. Still hold up well for another year or two. Decant as the wine has some sediment. Rating 91 (2230 views)
Tasted by ... on 5/12/2012: Cork taint.... Very disappointed - then opened a '00 - a great wine showing its age but still going strong (1933 views)
Tasted by Wrighty on 8/8/2008 & rated 90 points: Had softened and threw up a lot of sediment. Some secondary flavours have developed but fruit is still present. Pretty good but don't think it's going to get too much better. (1294 views)
Tasted by redbat on 2/4/2008 & rated 89 points: much better than the 2000 I had last week. The 2000 was gone...this is still hanging in there but near the end. A nice nose that is very floral....almost pinot like. Acidity pokes out a bit and lacking in body a bit. Not at all a typical shiraz. drink up (1411 views)
Tasted by Wrighty on 11/10/2007 & rated 91 points: A trio of Shirazes (Crown Wine Cellars, Hong Kong): Still seems quite young, pepper and spices with blackcurrant ant tannins on the palate. Developing nicely but needs more time. (1878 views)
Tasted by CamWheeler on 12/21/2005 & rated 90 points: Bannockburn Vertical Tasting - Chardonnay, Pinot & Shiraz (Royal Automobile Club, Sydney): Nice nose of black pepper, spices and a delicate floral lift. Elegant, with excellent length and the structure to age. I think this wine is going good places given time. (3123 views)
Tasted by Wrighty on 11/18/2005 & rated 92 points: Wow, warm spice, a little grilled beef and light toasty oak nose. Blackberries just showing through the fine tannins, alcohol and structure. This is full bodied but really well balanced. Drinking well now but will keep for several years (1781 views)

Bannockburn

Producer website

Producers notes
Bannockburn Vineyards was established by Stuart Hooper in 1974. His vision was to create a vineyard which would produce Australian wine of a quality to emulate the great wines of France, in particular the great Burgundies. Stuart Hooper had a purist, uncompromising approach to quality grape growing and winemaking. He had a strong belief in making wines, which genuinely reflect the flavours of the vineyard.

Bannockburn Vineyards remains in the Hooper family and its founders philosophy remains as the cornerstone behind all they do at Bannockburn today. All Bannockburn wines are produced from estate-grown fruit off their 27 hectares of vines. Situated on 3 separate sites, the vineyard soil profile ranges from black brown volcanic loam to dense clay sitting on a limestone base, and are generally of low fertility. The first vineyard was planted in 1974 with subsequent plantings during the early 1980’s, making them among the oldest in the Geelong region.

At Bannockburn Vineyards they believe their vineyards are what make the wines unique and provide a true point of difference. Since 2005, Michael Glover has been making the wines with great diligence and passion. “...everything we do is done with thought and care and without compromising on quality.” Organic practice, a belief in dry-grown viticulture, vine age and close planting combine with wild ferments, use of whole bunches, extended maceration times, extended lees contact and a fastidious barrel selection process combine to make wines that are exciting, unique and clearly identifiable as “Bannockburn”.
