Community Tasting Notes (average 91.1 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 54 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by sboyle on 3/10/2024 & rated 92 points: Huge floral display of rose petals on the nose. Flavor has notes of plums and flowers. Medium-plus body, acidity and tannins. Tannins have a fine-grit character. Overall, at this young age it’s already very pleasant and drinkable. I’m excited to see how this wine progresses over time. (2722 views)
Tasted by richshoes on 2/23/2024 & rated 90 points: most of the bottles I'd rate 93-94, but this one was off, never really opened up--pretty uneven, intense dark fruit, cotton. (2554 views)
Tasted by XK on 1/30/2024 & rated 91 points: Very good, lots of dark fruit and some earthy flavours. (2987 views)
Tasted by richshoes on 1/22/2024 & rated 93 points: delicious wine--rounded with nice layering and depth--dark cherry, chocolate, rhubarb.... (3212 views)
Tasted by Deegie on 1/20/2024 & rated 89 points: Tasted blind in a Cab showdown (even though it’s majority Merlot). Opened six hours before to slowly oxygenate. Got a nice mix of black and blue fruit with some leather and tobacco leaf. Acidity was barely high but tannins were a bit lower. It was nice and definitely a great value. (2789 views)
Tasted by richshoes on 1/14/2024 & rated 94 points: Great wine--rounded and medium bodied...super layered with dark cherry, mocha, blackberry (2575 views)
Tasted by Bnawine on 1/14/2024 & rated 91 points: $28.49 at Costco in Tennessee, which is always a bit higher than other states. deep color, purpleish edges pouring into the glass. The bottle had been open for over 90 minutes. Excellent accompaniment with food and then later, finishing the bottle. Balanced, fruity wi th good acid/tannin harmony and will improve over the near term (2–3 years). Enjoyable, and one to lay down a few more bottles of. (2785 views)
Tasted by Rune Schwartz on 9/27/2023 & rated 90 points: Precise young Margaux open for drinking. Well concentrated fruit, fresh acid and well balanced medium+ acid. Good balance and lenght. (3807 views)
Tasted by stamperb on 8/10/2023 & rated 87 points: Nose: ripe dark cherry; kirsch; delicate bouquet of fruit blossoms that hides behind the cherry and fruit liqueur notes. Palate: thick cherry cola, dried herbs; nicely balanced; warming wood on the finish; could use a bit more acid in my opinion; also, drinks a lot hotter than the 14% suggests; surprisingly quite a bit of sediment as well. (4215 views)
Tasted by sdwineguru on 7/21/2023 & rated 91 points: Tasty $32 Margaux 2019 Château Siran. Mid-garnet, viscous (14.0 alc.); smokey, earthy, red and black fruit, herbaceous nose; mid acids; mid+ tannins; semi-tight, slightly hot, woody finish. 16.5 UC Davis scale, 91 others. (4031 views)
Tasted by Vinnut on 7/17/2023 & rated 91 points: Dark reddish-purple garnet in color. Full, forward & fragrant nose of ripe fruits aromas of dark cherries, blueberries & cassis with overtones of floral notes of violets & dusty/earthy notes, spices, cocoa, coffee, tobacco, minerals & a good measure of vanilla/oak. Full bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, ripe fruit flavors of cherries, blackberries & plums with herbs, graphite, minerals, spices & vanilla/oak. Lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present with decanting & extended airing but should develop further with additional aging at which time it may merit a higher score. Very good QPR especially when compared to the prices of Napa Cabs. (4600 views)
Tasted by Rbhan12 on 7/8/2023: Had another bottle and followed for 5-6 hours. Right around 3-4h the wine sheds its baby fat, settles in the oak, and shows that classy BDX structure and flavors. Has some telltale Margaux notes but agree it isn't a singular wine.

Delicious and well worth the tariff at Costco pricing. (4353 views)
Tasted by SuperSomm on 6/24/2023: Deep ruby colour. Medium (+) and developing nose with blackcurrant, blackberry, blueberry, eucalyptus, black pepper, vanilla, cedar and chocolate. Pronounced taste of blackcurrant, blackberry, blueberry, eucalyptus, black pepper, vanilla, cedar and chocolate. Long and dry finish. High acidity. High tannins. Medium body. A very good Margaux with fantastic potential. Drink in ten to twenty five years. Goes well with beef or lamb. (2226 views)
Tasted by Delund on 6/23/2023 & rated 92 points: 1 hour decant, served in the high 50s F. Lovely ruby color. Nothing about this wine says Margaux, but it is a very very nice wine, with room/potential for improvement with age. Subdued nose of black fruits with cocoa and vanilla notes, and a bit of cedar gradually emerging. Savory rich cherry fruit on the palate, with notes of blackberry, tobacco and clove. Full-bodied, with soft tannins, and a grippy, lingering finish. Great QPR. (3477 views)
Tasted by Rich E Mac on 6/19/2023 & rated 91 points: Second favorite of three 2019 wines…did not resemble classic Margaux but instead seemed more modern. (3452 views)
Tasted by grafstrb on 5/31/2023: -- decanted 1.25 hrs. before initial taste --
-- tasted non-blind over 1.5 hrs --

NOSE: tight/reserved; red-fruited; a bit high-toned, with some well-judged oak; about a half hour into tasting a slight wet stones mineral note emerged.

BODY: medium bodied.

TASTE: juicy acidity; lots of oak; medium-fine drying tannins; a touch bitter; approx. 30 min. into tasting, this really turned a corner, revealing a pleasant floral note and gradually becoming more immediately approachable. Ash tasted this blind, and said she'd pay up to $80 -- so a smashing success there; I like it, too, although not that much. Killer deal at $25! (3376 views)
Tasted by ex-sommelier on 5/26/2023: I'll echo prior notes here, this was a ripe, rustic Cab blend that doesn't necessarily scream Margaux to me and was a bit unbalanced with the alcohol/structure at this stage. That said, even at regular retail price this is significantly better value than most Napa cabs, let alone the 25$ I got it for. Not my taste but maybe it would gain some balance and elegance with age, it is quite young to be drinking Margaux. I would have guessed Paso or Napa. (3640 views)
Tasted by Rbhan12 on 5/25/2023 & rated 90 points: Needs 2h decant to show its stuff. Followed over a few hours.

Dark cherries, clay pot, dark red florals on the nose. Supple oak as well. Palate is medium full body with nice acidity and supple tannins. Transitions from darker and rich to lighter raspberry and bright cherry. Maintains a background of oak that frames everything beautifully without being the focus. Has some subtle BDX terroir earthy notes. Finish has some nice freshness, red-purple lift, and supple chocolatey oak, and tannic structure is making my gums a little dry.

Tasting the wine, I would expect a CT average of 90.4, not 91.2. This is good not great, and a rather strong expression of Margaux. It has some telltale notes of elegance, but then pushes that line just a bit. Outstanding value at $26 from Costco. This is a great "old world for new world drinkers" wine.

Drink now with a 2h decant or hold for 3-5 years. I'm 90-91 on this. It isn't as good as some wines I've scored 91, and it is certainly better than some wines I've scored 90. Let's say 90.7 and call it a day. (3513 views)
Tasted by Firemanbrandon on 5/13/2023 & rated 92 points: Leans more New World in style. Rich and ripe fruit but not "jammy". Quite a value. Picked up at Costco for 25 bucks. Nice structure, body, acidity and nose. Rich cherry and dark fruits on the palate. Slightly heavy and not elegant like the D'Issan I recently had, it blows the doors off of the massed produced factory wine from the golden state even at double to triple (or more) the price of this. Though it was quite enjoyable now with a little air, time and patience should reward you with this one. (3531 views)
Tasted by Salute on 4/27/2023 & rated 90 points: Hmm. Okay, it's young. But I got some bitterness that (hopefully) will mellow out in the ensuing years.
I'm just not as excited about this wine as some others.
I may buy another bottle or two due to very reasonable price, and hide them in the back of the cellar for 5 years. That's probably what it's going to take. (3897 views)
Tasted by jjhsom on 4/23/2023 & rated 92 points: Opened and poured a glass. Recorked the bottle fairly quickly and let it sit for 24 hours (no nitrogen, argon…). It was better and less tannic initially than expected. It was even better out of initial poured glass 2+ hours later. 24 hours later, pulled cork from bottle and tried it again-had soften a lot and had muted tannins. My conclusions from a guy who loves Napa cabs and R banks but does not like many cab-predominate left banks: this is fruitier and softer early than most left bank bords. It should be at it’s prime in 1-5 years but will probably last much longer. Great value! It is one of the few left bank bords I will buy in quantity. (3848 views)
Tasted by winenot519 on 3/1/2023 & rated 92 points: Deep ruby on the pour. Earthy and aromatic nose of wild mushroom, violets, lightly toasted oak, and dark chocolate. Beautiful bouquet of black fruit comes forward with some aeration. Medium body, enticing acidity, and fine grained tannins all contribute to its superb balance and texture. Subtle spice woven through the palate. Finish is generous with notes of licorice, dried herbs, and cocoa. (Quite youthful… decant 60+ min.) (4253 views)
Tasted by Claret & CdP Gang on 2/1/2023: Decanted 2 hours, v young still, feminine, vanilla nose, oaky, high acidity, way too young
91+ (4641 views)
Tasted by IndyTom on 12/30/2022 & rated 93 points: Opened a bottle for assessment purposes. Uncorked for an hour and then decanted for two more hours. Extremely tannic, but there was an interesting undercurrent of dark fruits. On day two the fruit came shining through, but the tannin structure remained. The tannins were more integrated into the wine than on day 1. I'll buy more of this one as it seems like a small sum to pay for a serious, age-worthy wine. (4664 views)
Tasted by MicklethePickle on 12/29/2022 & rated 91 points: Opened last night, then left open in the bottle in the cellar for 24 hours. Opaque dark red with red stains on the glass. Totally drinkable today, even though not mature. Feminine red fruit in the nose, with some notes of graphite. That lead pencil aspect comes through even more in the mouth. I suspect there is more lurking but at the moment, the tannin (chewy) and acid (not overly aggressive) are more prominent. 5-12-16-9: 91/100. (4469 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Margaux

Read more about Margaux and its wines As with a large part of the Bordeaux vineyards, vines first appeared in Margaux during the Gallo-Roman period.
In 1705 a text mentions Château Margaux . But we have to wait for the end of the eighteenth century and the coming of the earliest techniques in aging for the concept of wines of high quality to develop. The confirmation of this was the famous 1855 classification which recognized 21 Crus Classés in the Margaux appellation. One hundred years later, the Viticultural Federation and the Margaux appellation of controlled origin were born. The appellation, which stretches out over five communes, is actually unique in the Médoc in that it is the only one to contain all the range of wines, as rich as they are vast, from First Great Cru Classé to the Fifths, not forgetting its famous Crus Bourgeois and its Crus Artisans.

In Margaux there is a predominance of Garonne gravel on a central plateau of about 4 miles in length and one and a quarter wide. To the east-south-east, it overlooks the low lying land by the estuary. Its east side is marked by gentle, dry valleys and a succession of ridges. The layer of gravel in Margaux was spread out by a former Garonne in the early Quaternary. Rather large in size, it is mingled with shingle of average dimension and represents the finest ensemble of Günz gravel in the Haut-Médoc. It is on this ancient layer on a Tertiary terrace of limestone or clayey marl that the best Médoc crus lie. All the conditions for successful wine are present : a large amount of gravel and pebbles, poor soil which cannot retain water and deep rooted vines.

It is customary to say that Margaux wines are the "most feminine" in the Médoc, thus stressing their delicacy, suppleness and their fruity, elegant aromas. This does not affect their great propensity for aging; just the opposite, for the relatively thin terroir imparts tannins which give them long life. The other characteristic of these wines which combine an elegant vitality, subtlety and consistency, is their diversity and personality. Over and above the flavour which is their "common denominator", they present an exceptional palette of bouquets, fruity flavours which show up differently from one château to another.

Production conditions (Decree dated August 10 1954)
In order to have the right to the Margaux appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:

- come from the commune of Margaux, Cantenac, Soussans, Arsac and Labarde, "excluding the land which by the nature of its soil or because of its situation, is unfit to produce wine of this appellation".
- satisfy precise production conditions: grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).

Vins de Bordeaux:
Grape Varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Merlot
