Community Tasting Notes (average 89.7 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 70 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by dlduchon on 4/17/2024 & rated 91 points: Fantastic Cab Franc. Awesome QPR. Intriguing flavors. (352 views)
Tasted by klezman on 1/26/2024: Night one this seems a bit on the oaky side, much more than I'd expect from Garagiste. Seeing past the vanilla and toast, though, it seems like a solid and well made wine.

A couple nights later it was fine. Nothing special, as others have indicated, and a bit of a disappointment considering the Garagiste hype. But that's the thing - you never quite know when he's full of BS or he's accurately reflecting the wine. (1108 views)
Tasted by Neecies on 1/14/2024: Dark and opaque. Very Bordeauxish. Deep, concentrated, dry and sophisticated. More oak showing than the '2020 of this same wine also on the table, but also more tannins. (978 views)
Tasted by classicalspin on 1/5/2024 & rated 90 points: Beginning to come into its own (978 views)
Tasted by Francophile on 11/16/2023 & rated 89 points: I am a fan of Cab Franc hence the purchase of 6 bottles. The label includes an extra sticker saying 95 points. In my view not 95 points. The best Cab Franc of recent tastings is the Pondera, this Marcelo starts off very harsh and bitter but this does blow off in a half hour or so and become more mellow. With my other bottles I think I will decant. (1189 views)
Tasted by PuPoNaTs on 9/30/2023 & rated 89 points: Nothing special here. Very alcoholic at the time of opening, not enjoyable even with 30 to 45 minutes of decating. Ended up using it for cooking with good results. I really do not understand the 95 points given by JS. (1282 views)
Tasted by fresso on 3/21/2023 & rated 93 points: Dark purple, big and full bodied. Black fruit, brooding and muscular. Wish I could report on this one on the second day, but it didn't have a chance of making it past the first grilled ribeye cap steak. Very tasty now... could be really rewarding with a few more years of bottle age. (1513 views)
Tasted by seekingbalance on 3/4/2023 & rated 89 points: Dark and relatively opaque, long legs run down with some viscosity. Nose is slightly hot. Nose also not quite as perfumed and assertive as some professionals reported. On its first night open, a bit cold,t he nose was very recessed. Today a bit warmer and with 30-40 minutes decant, it is more forward, dominated by dark fruits, with some earthiness, minearality and maybe some tar or something.....not sure.

Fairly rich body, assertive flavors that mostly match the nose. Tannins are string but neither green nor harsh - but everything suggests that this will improve in several ways with time. Alert: i generally favor aged wine when there is a trade off between complexity (old) and bright fruit (young). I plan to leave it sleeping until 2025 and then try a bottle each year.

Consumed first on it sown and then with a rib-end pork chop. (1318 views)
Tasted by classicalspin on 1/9/2023 & rated 91 points: Still young, beginning to come around. Real smack you in the mouth, full bodied. Will integrate with further aging. Recommend long, double decant. (1432 views)
 Tasted by Fuz98112 on 12/30/2022 & rated 86 points: Young (1218 views)
Tasted by lelandinmichigan on 9/7/2022 & rated 91 points: Maroon to light purple core, lighter ruby at the rim. Underbrush and coffee aromas with a dense dark fruit core starting to unfurl. Lighter body and easy to drink, 15 second finish. Has a nice gentle palate presence that coats the mouth but isn’t harsh or syrupy. Very nice. Definitely a good drink now, but will be fun to revisit in a year. I found it was more open and expressive than the bottle I had 6 months (Or so) ago. (1778 views)
Tasted by classicalspin on 9/3/2022 & rated 88 points: Day 1: Intense, tart beam of bright berry fruits with a bit of sour cherry grip at the end. Not characteristic Cab Franc. Good length. Day 2, a bit tamer with some licorice on the finish which added character but I did not love. I think this wine still needs some more time to integrate. Not in love. I have 8 more bottles, will try again in a year. (1311 views)
Tasted by jmcmchi on 7/21/2022: Dark and intense

Meatier than I remember. Lots of fruit over firm tannins, distinctly new world (1604 views)
Tasted by MBusk on 7/19/2022 & rated 90 points: Rich but not heavy, with blackberry and currant flavors that fan out across the palate through fine tannins and moderately high acidity. The finish is long and minerally. Would buy again, especially at $15. (1366 views)
Tasted by Neecies on 5/25/2022: PnP'd on the deck while watching birds on the beach, not decanted, no food. Drinks well immediately. Very dry, French in style, dusty, classic CF flavors, full bodied. (1730 views)
Tasted by redz on 5/8/2022 & rated 90 points: Mystery wine, 95 pts...by Suckling. Jon should know better. That said, smooth, approachable franc, should improve. (1410 views)
Tasted by Scottwhipp on 5/3/2022 & rated 90 points: Full bodied and flavorful. Subtle cigar box on the nose. Velvety mouthfeel. Vanilla and mild integrated oak comes through on the front palate. Mix of red and black fruit mid palate, along with subtle notes of tobacco and earth. Mild tannins and moderately long sappy fruit finish. Very nice drinking wine with or without food. (1417 views)
Tasted by jmcmchi on 1/11/2022 & rated 90 points: Over two days

The extra air made a huge difference.

Dark and dusty tannins, powerful blue fruit, definitely a food wine. (2663 views)
Tasted by Nfmds on 12/4/2021 & rated 92 points: Mixed berry nose: Blackberry, raspberry, blueberry, hint cranberry.
Flavor: intense berry, hint of smoke
Velvety mouthfeel, subtle tannins (2481 views)
Tasted by Olson’s Wine Room 2005 on 11/18/2021: Dry. Dusty. (2546 views)
Tasted by Nojomoschwa on 11/7/2021 & rated 88 points: One of the few 'meh' decisions I've made on Garagiste (granted, it was a mystery wine). It's fine…modern Cab Franc style with lots of oak and smoothness. The varietal character is underneath there somewhere, and does poke its head out to say hi from time to time. I mean, it was $12+ so you really can't complain. (2601 views)
Tasted by CAJR on 10/30/2021 & rated 90 points: Blackberry, tobacco (2505 views)
Tasted by fmginc on 9/2/2021 & rated 89 points: Nice rich fruit well balanced tannins great deal at this price (1900 views)
Tasted by joseph120 on 9/2/2021: It was ok. A little bit fruit forward - me like that. Fuller bodied than a Loire Valley Cab Franc - ok by me. Finish - not so ok by me. Very smoky, muddled, almost processed. This wine does NOT punch above it's price. It's adequately priced - you're not getting a great bargain here. Couple days later, had a 2014 Marcelo Pelleriti Selection Campo de los Andes Malbec Blend. That is how a finish is supposed to taste - much more refined. (2216 views)
Tasted by wmccone54 on 8/29/2021 & rated 88 points: Opened and splash decanted on Day 1; IMHO not even close to being ready to drink. Considerable oak, unresolved tannin, and muddled blue and red fruits made this difficult to consume without food. Vacuumed sealed and put back into the refrigerator.

Much more approachable on day 2; oak had subsided and tannins were subdued. Enjoyed with food. Although the blue and red fruits are still primarily, this wine seems to have good potential with further cellaring. Recommend holding for another 12-15 months. Just needs more time to move beyond youthfulness. (1823 views)

Argentina

Wines of Argentina

Argentina has been making wine since the 1500s, tracing its wine heritage back to Spain, France and, perhaps surprisingly, Italy. Italian immigration is second only to Spanish in Argentine culture, and the flavors of Italy show up strongly in the nation’s wine, food and cultural tradition. Historically, Argentina has kept much of its wine consumption at home, drinking most of the wine it makes. But we are now seeing more very serious Argentine wines north of the border, and Malbec is leading the movement. The wine-making region in Argentina ranges between the 22° and 42° South latitude. It spreads at the foothills of the Andean mountain range along over 2,400 km; from the province of Salta to the province of Río Negro, with a variety of climates and soils that makes each region a unique land. In general terms, the areas dedicated to vine cultivation are dry and arid with a low level of rain and humidity, determining factor as regards grape health. Abundant sunny days and thermal amplitude favor a good maturity and concentration of aroma and color in the grain. Soils are deep, permeable and poor in organic matter, decisive qualities at the time of obtaining good wine. Due to the low rain regime, irrigation is necessary. Water comes from the Andean range thaw, descending in the shape of rivers to become channels or ditches. Undoubtedly, the combination of these factors turns Argentina into a veritable oasis for the highest quality wine-making. Nevertheless, there is still a long way to go. Wine-making in Argentina, at the level that it achieves today, has a young history that goes back to a little more than 10 years ago. Technological progress, investment and some farsighted businessmen enabled a determining transformation. The province of Mendoza is the most traditional area in the viticultural industry, and is diverse enough to be divided into zones, according to their significantly different weather, height and soil characteristics. These include the Northern Zone, which is suitable for fruity whites and young reds, at a height from 600 to 700m; the Eastern Zone, with a height ranging from 600 to 700m, and the most productive zone in the province; the Uco Valley, a zone of colder weather and higher altitudes (between 800 and 1,400m over sea level); San Rafael, with heights ranging from 450 to 800m; and the High Zone of the Mendoza River, with heights ranging from 800 to 1,100m over sea level and various microclimates, this is the zone where almost all noble varieties have easily become adapted. It is a region that is remarkably well-suited to vine culture, protected from the Pacific’s cooling influence by the Andes and enjoying a long summer of cool nights and warm days, with a dry summer climate but plenty of water available from the region’s rivers. Malbec in particular is outstanding from this area, and it has clearly emerged as the star, the darling of both consumers and critics.
