Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 26 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Eric Becker on 4/9/2022 & rated 90 points: Bordeaux masterclass at Summa 2022 (Weingut Alois Lageder, Margreid, South Tyrol): Here the colour shows some more browning. Likewise the nose - while sweetly perfumed - is already quite tertiary with licorice and notes of woodpolish, soy sauce and incense. On the palate the wine is fully developed, probably not as powerful as it had been a couple of years ago, but still very pleasant with a fine and nicely rounded mouthfeel and good sweetness. Not over the hill but time to drink up. (1348 views)
Tasted by rjpbath on 7/2/2021 & rated 91 points: A year on from my last tasting, this is much better Lovely wine, browning (it is 25 years old after all) and really punchy with fruit and old Merlot character. 96 is not my favourite vintage in Bordeaux, but this is pretty good (But it is shortlived - 25 cl decanted at the time of drinking into a 25 cl bottle is not good 18 hours later). The message is certainly: drink up and enjoy. (1352 views)
Tasted by rjpbath on 12/6/2020 & rated 88 points: I would like to praise this more, but in fact it was rather dull. I know that it can do better, hence the score. (1545 views)
Tasted by rjpbath on 12/6/2020 & rated 86 points: Dull - have I missed the boat with this? Or is it just not very interesting? (1572 views)
Tasted by Raage on 7/15/2019 & rated 88 points: CD5
A l’aveugle; une certaine finesse bordelaise, de la tenue, des epices et du sous-bois mais dans l’ensemble un peu fatigué, et un peu « ancien monde » (1947 views)
Tasted by rossi.wine on 6/27/2017 & rated 89 points: Tasted after the 1995. More fruit, better nose - spices, tobacco, liquorice. More fruit also on the palate, a bit more harmonious, more generous, but not much length. Drink up 88-90. (2663 views)
Tasted by Rahsaan_Kirk on 8/25/2014: Je bois rarement des vins dans cette gamme, j'ai pas le budget. Ce fut un délice, soyeux, long en bouche, bon fruit, excellent ! (4163 views)
Tasted by Fantasio on 8/23/2014 & rated 94 points: Délicieux! Merci Mr Champlain. Nez intensémment arommatique, envoûtant, champignons, terre humide, sapinage, griotte... Tannins complètements fondus et robe claire, on dirait la bourgogne. Et que dire de la longueur en bouche! À son apogée selon moi. (3900 views)
Tasted by SoundinBetween on 6/24/2014: same as last note. the fruit on this bottle is fading just a bit but this is still a wonderful wine and, kept in good storage, will go at least a few more years. (4010 views)
Tasted by kiichli on 5/1/2014: My last bottle was in 2006, and I wrote that it probably wouldn't last much longer.

Well, here we are in 2014, and it is still deelish. Fruit fading a bit, but black cherry, plumb, tobacco, and leather coming through. I still have one of these, and I won't make any dire predictions. (4258 views)
Tasted by SoundinBetween on 12/6/2013 & rated 92 points: mature, fully resolved tannins with a great nose full of dark fruits but with at least a few years left in good storage conditions. palette is silky smooth, and what else to say.. this is great. (3370 views)
Tasted by SoundinBetween on 11/9/2013 & rated 90 points: at peak drinking. wonderful nose of dark fruits that didn't change a bit from the time it was opened until we finished 2+ hours later. didn't take further notes but this was an excellent food wine and well worth a (discounted) price. (1708 views)
Tasted by winopro on 2/21/2013 & rated 90 points: Opened with barnyard aromas which gradually softened and were accompanied by distinct red fruit characteristics. Rounded and smooth on the palate with a finish that left you wanting a little more. Great value for money and a fun, exciting wine to experience. (2188 views)
Tasted by Marc on 5/15/2012 & rated 90 points: Best showing for this bottle - pure and rich plummy fruit, spicy cedar, slightly dirty oak handling from old oak adds interest (although some might be turned off). Very smooth and a point - this is fully resolved but still displays vibrant fruit. Appetizing acid brings lift to the palate, while very fine and faint tannins bring definition to the finish. This is not for really long term aging as it will not get better (only different) but it has developed in a positive manner. I will have to say this was outstanding for my palate - involving, multi-dimensional and a wine that convinces on its fruit quality. (2459 views)
Tasted by Marc on 10/13/2009 & rated 88 points: very perfumed and well made and defined bordeaux. very well balanced, cedar and mocha and toasty oak. A bit more acid definition than the 2005. Good grip and a touch of iron ore in the mid palate. with air, quite vegemitey, some mushrooms and a lovely cherry aroma and flavour. Ultimately a structured old school bordeaux - very nice. Will age for another 5 - 7 years. (2991 views)
Tasted by sanjibaby on 2/5/2009 & rated 87 points: Needed some time after opening. Ideally secant a couple of hours in advance. (2974 views)
Tasted by Bishop Of Exeter on 12/25/2008 & rated 87 points: Lovely garnet colour with pale clear edges. A slight cigar-box scent but never really opened up in the same way as earlier bottles I've drunk. Smooth and fresh in the mouth, with some lovely dark fruit and charry notes to the fore, but palate possibly a little jaded by Christmas excesses. Gave me just what I wanted; reasonable quality and satisfaction without being challenging or needing food. (2984 views)
Tasted by CTSV157 on 11/23/2007 & rated 88 points: Although past its window, the wine remains very drinkable with a mocha nose, ripe berries and smooth velvety tannis. (2852 views)
Tasted by kiichli on 3/5/2006: Deep color with clean rim. Very forthcoming nose; blackcurrant, cherry, leather, a bit of chocolate. Full on the palate with good balance and acidity. Very nice; glad I have some more, although I won't hold them for too much longer. (3285 views)
Tasted by MRichman on 10/31/2005: Nice mint, eucalyptus, herbs. Good front, short watery finish. Nice toasty oak, but not enough fruit to fill. Some coffee. Pretty nice, but light.

$25 Morrell 5/02 (2764 views)
Tasted by Will on 10/15/2005: Rather mordern style with a very sweet nose and on the palate the feeling of acidulated sweets (acid drops). Nice wine but not my cup of tea. (3269 views)
Tasted by TaitaJidou on 4/5/2004 & rated 87 points: Perfectly pleasant; not immense depth; nothing especially distinguishing. I served this with a mushroom risotto and had hoped for more -- especially from a bottle 8 years old. (1948 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman
