Community Tasting Notes (average 89.2 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 31 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by isbjoern on 11/25/2013 & rated 88 points: A spicy and fruity CdR, well balanced with a bit of earthy funk, a bit of heat and sweetness, soft tannins, X-mas spices and more red than black fruits. Still showing well (last bottle must have been flawed), but wouldn't wait too long. An easy drinking high quality CdR. - 88 points (4066 views)
Tasted by EMichels on 8/7/2013 & rated 90 points: Interesting fairly natural tasting; Quite dark; A bit rough (4218 views)
Tasted by EMichels on 7/16/2013 & rated 91 points: Very bright black currant nose - so volatile that it seems it must be throwing off alcohol but I otherwise don't sense it; Juicy black currant palate; Quite tasty (4128 views)
Tasted by isbjoern on 4/11/2013 flawed bottle: Spicy and smoky wine with acidic red berry fruit, soft tannins. A rather basic Cotes du Rhone. But there seems to be a cork taint with this bottle. - flawed (4428 views)
Tasted by jamesdoeser on 3/25/2012 & rated 91 points: This is a very special wine: like a mini-Beaucastel. Great value given it's style. Suggest you don't crack it open for a couple of years. (5447 views)
Tasted by the godfather on 9/11/2010: a serious wine but still super tight (3833 views)
Tasted by the godfather on 6/15/2009 & rated 89 points: nice, not sure it's going to get any better (4526 views)
Tasted by Zinny on 5/13/2009: This bottle took about 3 hours to open up but, when it did, it was very nice. Mineral-laden nose of red fruit and flowers. Cherry and blackberry fruit, firm tannins, long earthy finish. This wine should have plenty of life left to it . .of course I have no more. (4297 views)
Tasted by the godfather on 12/19/2008 & rated 89 points: closing down? nose is still great and the wine seems to be geting more serious (4345 views)
Tasted by ChillyWino on 12/6/2008 & rated 92 points: Similar to the last bottle, rich red and black fruits, with hints of smoke, spice and earth. Rich and full bodied with a great lingering finish. (4541 views)
Tasted by grafstrb on 11/24/2008 & rated 89 points: -- decanted for 45 min before tasting --
-- tasted non-blind over 2 hours --

NOSE: strong sense of plum and cool raspberry; taragon; just a hint of secondary funk; a slight candied sweetness. (A: bread dough, wet stones, black fruits.)

BODY: fine particulate matter is suspended in the wine; purple-garnet color of medium-deep depth; medium bodied.

TASTE: well-balanced, but needs another year or two? (acidity is very juicy ... a bit puckering ... and the tannis are rather grippy); cranberry and sour cherry flavors play against a strong cement-like minerality ... the minerality is much more assertive than the average Cotes du Rhone; with time, framboise and gentle spices; weak back half of palate; finish is about 30-35 sec. in length. A fine CdR, but at $18 I wonder if I'd buy it again.

B: 50, 5, 12, 15, 7 = 89

Tasted by ChillyWino on 11/23/2008 & rated 92 points: Excellent wine. Rich spicy nose of of both red and black fruits with a hint of smoke/earth. A very lush and rich wine with the flavor profile following through on the palate. Nice long lingering finish. This bottle disappeared quickly. (4519 views)
Tasted by the godfather on 11/6/2008 & rated 91 points: This bottle tonight was much more inspiring than the previous 2, wonderful berry nose, longer on the finish and very round (4293 views)

(4300 views)
Tasted by the godfather on 9/29/2008 & rated 89 points: see prior note (4363 views)
Tasted by the godfather on 9/22/2008 & rated 88 points: amazing creamy spicy nose but the finish does not deliver, yummy, but I expected a bit more (4425 views)
Tasted by JOsgood on 9/22/2008 & rated 89 points: Great nose and lovely fruit are the highlights of this easy drinking wine. Very pure tasting with some spice. I like it. (4294 views)
Tasted by suthersm on 9/15/2008: Love the nose. Cherry, earth, steel/iron, beef, and just a bit of funk. Drinking the wine was a bit of a let down, though. It was disjointed and out of balance. good vibrant berry fruit up front, fairly hollow in the middle, and a tannic finish that made the wine seem short. Probably better in a year, but not worth it for me. (4440 views)
Tasted by wabi47 on 8/22/2008 & rated 88 points: earthy nose; very good red raspberry and vanilla; some good earth with a hint of funk but overall has a clean sensation due to good acidity; good food wine (4308 views)
Tasted by Zinny on 8/4/2008: Awesome. Mineral driven - featuring blackberry, kirsch, pepper and cream with a touch of gamey-ness. I really like this one. (4292 views)
Tasted by wcacern on 9/1/2007 & rated 88 points: over '90' / under $30 (Wine Exchange): 14% alcohol. dark color. plum, berries, peppery spice notes. full bodied with firm tannins. (5439 views)
Tasted by Siggy on 5/9/2007: 2007 France Trip - Beaucastel, Ferrand, Vielle Julienne, Grand Veneur (Southern Rhone): Bottled 3-4 weeks ago; mostly Grenache. Delicious, perfumed nose of smoky black fruits. High acidity. Tannic and young. Promising. (6605 views)

Over the last decade, Jean-Paul Daumen, proprietor/winemaker at Domaine de la Vieille Julienne, has emerged as one of France’s most compelling wine producers. He is a driven man that will sacrifice anything for quality in his wines. For example, in the rain soaked 2002 vintage he harvested only 50% of the crop, and then rejected half of that. One-fourth of a crop does not make economic sense, but Jean-Paul has his eye on a much longer-term goal. All his wines are labours of love.

Jean-Paul farms 10 hectares in Northern Chateauneuf-du-Pape and 5 hectares in Cotes du Rhone “lieu-dit Clavin” for Vieille Julienne, including the ancient vines his family planted at the turn of the century– all biodynamically. Daumen’s winemaking philosophies are remarkably simple – old vines, tiny yields of around 20 hectoliters per hectare, no SO2 during vinification, aging in neutral tanks or wood, and bottling without fining or filtration — and they combine to give Vieille Julienne’s wines their distinctive character.

“I strive to find the best practices rather than set myself a goal in terms of a finished product. All of my decisions are made for the future. What motivates me is to install our wines in the long run, even if the path is longer, more complicated and difficult.

We have the distinction of being located exclusively on terraces in the northern part of the appellation Châteauneuf du Pape and this site provides freshness, balance, depth and minerality naturally- from there one must understand and respect the context of the vintage. This is important if one seeks the right balance.” -Jean-Paul Daumen

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.
