Tasted by dbg on 4/2/2024: Outstanding. (439 views)
Tasted by jimyeni on 3/28/2024 & rated 98 points: Quintessential cult cab in the mid 2000s and I enjoyed every bit of it. Lots of rich black fruit, oak spices, but incredible clean, balanced, and long. Great wine. (438 views)
Tasted by GA on 1/1/2024: Joel and Alison (860 views)
Tasted by tor@livenation.se on 9/16/2023 & rated 100 points: I tried this vintage together with 04 & 07 and this is an unbelievable wine at the moment. The nose is a killer and the taste is all you can ask for from the best Napa Valley Cabs. So much wonderful pencil & lead tones are coming up, full bodied. I'm sure it has a long life but why wait, when it's so good now. Tried it in 2020, good then but fabulous now! (1371 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 8/4/2023: Chez Winefool Goodbye Dinner (Chicago, IL): Sticks out in the line-up of old world wines, but I appreciate the opportunity to taste this cult cab. I can see why people like these in a more veneered style. (1670 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 8/4/2023: The End of Winefoolishness in Chicago (Hughes House - Chicago IL): One of these things is not like the others. Out of place tonight, even if I could appreciate its quality. (2095 views)
Tasted by doug374 on 7/22/2023 & rated 94 points: Dark and deep red coloring with fruit that is not only smooth and silky but still young with room to mature. Very easy to enjoy with our Denver steaks. (1229 views)
Tasted by lroseman on 7/6/2023: 50th (1117 views)
Tasted by Purple Tooth on 4/8/2023 & rated 95 points: Weightless and dry for the age, it kicks off with deep jammy fruit that turns into a herbaceous path and puffs away with a floral component. Really elegant for the weight and dryness still speaks sexiness. I like this but I think that the structure wil eventually throw it off balance...But not yet.....Drink (1653 views)
Tasted by Throughthegrapevine on 3/2/2023 & rated 94 points: Still young and vibrant. Only sign its not very young is the great integration of tannins and fruit. (1155 views)
Tasted by AValdes on 11/24/2022 & rated 93 points: Really young. Dark color. Tannins not soft enough yet. Not yet turning toward east to drink - still a little astringent (1588 views)
Tasted by dbg on 6/9/2022: Cellared since release, perfect cork and fill. Decanted 2 hours before serving, still needed an hour or two to fully open. Dark red to rim. Cassis, blackberry, plum on the nose, a hint of mint and herbs comes later. Full body, rich ripe fruit, good balance, long finish. Remains were even better the next day. Excellent-outstanding. (2050 views)
Tasted by beatles on 3/18/2022 & rated 96 points: This is a cool cat if I ever saw one, vertical precise, a true blut Cab, rich but restrained. Has real class. A European sort of vintage maybe, still a Napa Cab at it's best. No sin to drink it now.

Tasted by Cailles on 3/11/2022 & rated 95 points: 6 Vintages of Harlan (1995-2018): Some conclusions: 1) The highlight in all Harlan wines and what sets the wine apart from many other high-end Napa wines is the elegance and absolute weightless texture and feel, with the finest tannins and an incredible balance. This became obvious in all vintages. 2) What is a big advantage in young wines, might become a disadvantage with a lot of age. The question I always ask myself with this wine (similar to some right bank Merlots in Bordeaux): is there is enough structure and tension to age gracefully for 30, 40 years? I'm not convinced and the data point added in this tasting (1995, 2005) didn't show as much structure as I hope to have at that age in my Cabs. 3) Gun to my head, I say the ideal drinking window for Harlan is rather 5 to 15 years after the vintage and not 20-40 years. 4) The 2018 vintage is spectacular with an incredibly complex profile but will need a few years to flesh out.

TN: Medium+ expressive nose with ripe dark fruit, some hints of baking spices which quickly disappear, herbs, minerality, some candied red fruit. Very pleasant and inviting. On the palate, this is wonderfully filled with fresh blue and black forest fruit, mixed with floral notes, and some candied red fruit, along minerality and herbal scents. The structure is everything: very soft, round and with the superb weightless texture and feel; ripe, round tannins, perfectly, perfectly integrated medium+ acidity. Good, long, complex finish. Overall, this is a very good wine: beside the structural frame, the cooler year produced more nuanced, fresher and brighter fruit expression which is much appreciated. 94/95 pts.

Decanting: No extensive decanting needed. (3065 views)
Tasted by slywka7 on 8/29/2021 & rated 98 points: Decanted for 1 hour. Got a bad glass with a soapy smell in there. Carried over to a new glass. Aromas of blackberry, currant, iron, pencil and black cherry. Flavors of blackberry, iron, currant, mint, black cherry and hint of olive. Ends with 50+ second finish. Odor started disappearing with some time. Tough to evaluate this against the last time I had it because of the odor. May revisit note.

Reloaded with a new glass. Smell
Is gone. Still order the last time I had this but this is still a phenomenal wine. (3678 views)
Tasted by BROpus One on 2/27/2021 & rated 95 points: This needed a 3-4 hour decant to really hit a nice stride. The plum on the nose faded away and we got the Harlan we love--earthy bordeaux nose with strong fruit backbone and nice long finish. Plenty of time to keep these in the cellar but in a solid drinking window now with a long decant. (4016 views)
Tasted by wino_tim on 9/28/2020 & rated 94 points: Deep ruby, nearly purple at its core with some haze from sediment. Classy and composed on the nose, this offers aromas of ripe and dried black fruits, crème de mûre, grilled porcini mushrooms, rosemary, graphite, compost-y, loam, vanilla and toast. Medium+ bodied with medium+ acid and tight, still chewy tannins that cut short the flavors of ripe black fruit, savory herbs and oak spice. This still needs time to soften, hope it does not dry out before it does. (3768 views)
Tasted by Lord of the Bottles on 7/17/2020 & rated 97 points: Dirt, rusty, bark, berries and fruit. Medicinal. Leather nose, ripe fruit, strawberries, amazing pond-like nose that reminds me of DRC. (3846 views)
Tasted by TwoSmoochies on 5/23/2020 & rated 94 points: At openiing (oncd we had wrestled the cork ouy of the bottle), it was amazing but 2 hours later, less exciting. (3433 views)
Tasted by carendt on 3/11/2020 & rated 99 points: Explosive. (3342 views)
Tasted by Yassine23 on 9/26/2019: Mesmerising. Poured by Don Weaver at the US embassy. Perfect balance of meatiness, ultra seductive fruit, rich, velvety and long. Unreal (3553 views)
Tasted by retired_and_roving on 8/15/2019: Napa with friends; 8/15/2019-8/18/2019 (Napa, CA): Tasted at Harlan Estate. My favorite of the wines tasted today and clearly the most mature and in the drinking window. This is a powerful and concentrated in style, but achieves nice balance between the fruit while maintaining enough acidity to provide some energy on the palate. More notes of forest floor, dried leaves come through starting at mid palate and the fruit here picks up some red tones along with black fruit. (3299 views)
Tasted by Diane (LI) on 8/1/2019: My one and only Harlan Estate and I was saving it for something special to share with the family. Last night was the first time in 3 years that we were all together in my home, so I planned a dinner around this bottle of wine. My only other Harlan was a 1995 about 15 years ago that was brought to a dinner by a very generous person and that wine remained in my brain as perhaps the best wine I ever had the pleasure of. This bottle joins that one. Rich and deep, without being sweet. It had dark fruit, big tannins, and the perfect amount of acidity. I did notice a heaviness that I wasn't used to but this wine did not disappoint. (2862 views)
 Tasted by BillKellett999 on 6/17/2019 & rated 98 points: Incredible (2767 views)
Tasted by Cali Fan on 5/28/2019 & rated 97 points: Structured and blended acidity, in a great drinking window right now. Lots of blood, chocolate and dark fruit. A beauty (2690 views)

Sommelier Journal, November 2009
(Harlan Estate) This wine has a pronounced nose of ripe blueberry, mocha, and grilled coffee and a velvety, full texture that is at once silky and massive. It has great elegance in spite of its size. According to director Don Weaver, the '05 Harlan is a classic expression of the estate. Winery Spotlight: Harlan Estate

Harlan Estate

Producer website - Read more about Harlan Estate

Harlan Estate was founded in 1984 by H. William Harlan with the vision to consistently produce a wine of the highest quality and great longevity from the estate – in essence, to create a “First Growth” of California. Each year, the wine of Harlan Estate strives to faithfully express the abiding character of the land, and the distinctive attributes of the vintage.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
