Tasted by ThijsV on 11/26/2023 & rated 90 points: Took about an hour to open up. Medium intensity with sour cherry, firestone, barnyard, manure, earth, coffee, black currant. 90-91

At €8/bottle an absolute bargain (766 views)
Tasted by 1961Vintage on 9/12/2023 & rated 91 points: Drinking very well with modest aging potential to smooth out tannins. PTQ the wine would score higher. (868 views)
Tasted by CamWheeler on 5/27/2023 & rated 86 points: Samples from Bill #4: Raspberry, smoky, meaty aromas. Palate is quite fruit forward although there is quite a bit of that smoky character as well. Medium length. Found it lacking some excitement, it's alright but feels a tad hollow. (1450 views)
Tasted by TWSMike on 5/10/2023 & rated 80 points: Pretty straight forward Mencia full of ripe red fruits and earth. Strawberry, cherry, raspberry, garden soil, crushed rock. Medium intensity throughout. Compared to a lot of Mencia I've had this one is a bit middling. (1232 views)
Tasted by Vino5 on 2/3/2023 & rated 90 points: Flavor Explosion in my mouth

Very good fruit forward wine (1261 views)
Tasted by Van Beinum on 12/12/2022 & rated 90 points: Very smooth. Nice bouquet (1312 views)
Tasted by Johno's Cellar on 11/19/2022 & rated 89 points: The wine shows black cherry-coloured with intense violet hues, a lovely mature wine which is strange as its only 4 yrs old. The bouquet displays ripe red fruits, minerals and blue flowers. Fine and exquisite on the palate as it is fleshy, fragrant, and full-bodied. Quite a delicious enjoyable wine (1153 views)
Tasted by JohnSh on 6/13/2022 & rated 91 points: A very interesting Bierzo Mencia. Deep ruby in colour. Lots of earthy cherries, other red fruits and a slight herbal note on the powerful, lovely nose. There's pure, very concentrated flavours of cherry, cranberry and red plum on the medium to full bodied palate, and serious tannins on the finish. A little disjointed right now, I think, as the tannins will need time to subside, but an intriguing and powerful Mencia that is very good QPR (A-). (1461 views)
Tasted by JJKinch on 6/7/2022 & rated 88 points: Red fruit (cherry), herbal element, earth, slight forest, great acidity. Lingering finish. Enjoyable. Finish a little on the short side. (1145 views)
Tasted by MikeyQue on 5/15/2022 & rated 84 points: Great value for this Spanish bottle enjoyed with friends headed to walk Camino. Lots of aroma when cork opens and more mouth and tannin than expected at this price. A little fresh; could’ve held longer. (1091 views)
Tasted by jwhiggins on 5/9/2022 & rated 93 points: Opens with an evocative nose of menthol, sandalwood, juniper, menthol and seared meat, which braces the same elements on the equally evocative palate. Mouth-filling fruit of dark black cherry, blueberry, and damson/plums in counterpoint to the plush, long tannins, sweet oak vanillin, hints of cocoanut and barrique barrel spice. Finishes long and plush. Excellent with food, especially robust fare that benefits from an equally robust foil to set it off. Perfect pairing with pan-seared, Cajun spice-rubbed pork chops. Excellent QPR. (503 views)
Tasted by 1961Vintage on 3/23/2022 & rated 93 points: Scored PTQ. Terrific wine at sub $20. (1326 views)
Tasted by ProfByron on 3/9/2022 & rated 88 points: First day, ho hum bright and fresh. Too young.

A few days later (sealed inna smaller screwcap bottle) much more interesting. Savoury, green forest elements.

14.5%, cork (diam?) (1258 views)
Tasted by VancouverRay on 2/20/2022 & rated 88 points: Needed at least 4hrs decant and came around nicely. (1151 views)
Tasted by biggie on 1/20/2022 & rated 89 points: Fruit Day - explosive nose of ripe red fruit (can smell it almost a metre from the glass). There’s also savoury herbs, spice and crushed rock on the nose. On the palate the flavours are bright red fruit with a lovely savoury/licorice root element on the back of the palate and on the finish. Pretty tasty and definitely ready to drink now. (1325 views)
Tasted by df1962 on 10/10/2021 & rated 91 points: PnP.

Consistent with previous notes. (1861 views)
Tasted by asajoseph on 9/15/2021 & rated 91 points: Bottle 3 (of 6), this developed nicely over three days. Day 1 was all sour red cherry & spice - aniseed & clove. Then day 2 brought a clear mushroom character - which surprised me a little, but by day 3 it was gone & back to a pure fruit character, red plum, red cherry, spiced raspberry coulis. Fascinating wine. (1839 views)
Tasted by df1962 on 9/3/2021 & rated 91 points: PnP.

Crunchy cherry mineral. Delicious. Getting more. Nebbiolo and Pinot Noir like. Delicious. Getting some more. Huge value (1769 views)
Tasted by Get Real on 7/9/2021 & rated 89 points: PNP Deep purple, strong nose. Fresh red fruit. Decent acidity and some smooth tannin. Enjoyable and great QPR. Will see how this develops. (1679 views)
Tasted by BB_RP on 5/31/2021 & rated 88 points: Young/tannic, didn't open up a great deal over time (1588 views)
Tasted by Johno's Cellar on 5/23/2021 & rated 89 points: opened up over 2 hrs to be a very full flavoured. very ripe berry and stewed fruits with some oak integration (1146 views)
Tasted by asajoseph on 4/29/2021 & rated 91 points: The deep purple colour belies a fresh red fruit, and savoury palate, combining raspberry, ripe strawberry, cherry with wet earth, leather, and Smokey cedar wood. Seems more mature than it actually is; perhaps, but that’s no bad thing!!! (1009 views)
Tasted by despore on 2/22/2021 & rated 91 points: Dark ruby, clean, bright rich red cherry, mint, slightly herbaceous, high acidity, med grain fine tannins, med (+) finish. Well balanced, really enjoyable, great QPR. (1030 views)

Bodegas Peique

producer website

After many years of growing grapes and making small lots of wine, Luis Peique and his family established Bodegas Peique in 1999. The winery was built in 2000 and one of the sons, Jorge, who makes wine in Ribera del Duero, took over as winemaker. Jorge got his degree from the famous “Escuela de Viticultura y Enología de Requena” in 1994 and worked for Bodegas Protos (Ribera del Duero) from 1996 to 1998. With just a few vintages under his belt as the winemaker at Peique, the wines have been ranked among the best from Bierzo and are considered some of the most exciting wines made in Spain today. Bodegas Peique is located on the western border of Castilla Y Leon. The vineyards are in the town Valtuille de Abajo. Bierzo has a cool climate with Mediterranean and Atlantic influences. The climate falls between the mild, temperate style of Galicia and the hot, continental uplands of the Duero, with sufficient rainfall and top summer temperature of not much more than 32˚C (90˚F). As a result, the wines have a good balance of fruit and acid. All harvesting is done by hand. There is minimal intervention in the vineyards.

Mencía

Mencia is grown in the Northwestern region of Spain near the borders of Galicia, Leon, and Zamora. Mencia produces fruity wines of great color, acidity and aging potential. It is sweet and aromatic, with a good dose of alcohol. The vines produce medium-sized clusters and fruit.

The reds made from Mencia have a characteristic velvety palate. Traditional reds are pale, fragrant and light wines. Modern winemakers are creating bolder reds, of higher concentration, expressing Mencia’s aromas and freshness. Many wineries are taking advantage of the variety ability to aging.

Rose wines are aromatic and fruity, lively, light and soft.

Spain

Vinos de España - Wines of Spain (Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior) | Wikipedia
Wine Map on weinlagen-info

Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous [sic] Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net

Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos (when sweetened). But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial). Based on in-spain.info.

Castilla y León

Castilla y León Wine (Turismo Castilla y León )

Bierzo

[[D.O.]] Bierzo is located on the western edge of the province of [[León]], next to the [[Galicia|Galician]] border. The region has a distinct microclimate, being at relatively low altitude and protected on both sides by mountains, marking a transition between the arid [[meseta]] and verdant Galicia.

The Santiago de Compostela pilgrim route passes directly through the region and the predominant red grape, [[Mencía]], was allegedly introduced by pilgrims. Mencía makes up 70% of planting and many wines are 100% Mencía. [[Garnacha Tintorera]] is the secondary red grape, although there are also experimental plantings of other varieties, including [[Merlot]] and [[Cabernet Sauvignon]]. Whites may contain [[Godello]], [[Doña Blanca]], [[Palomino]] and [[Malvasia]].

Bierzo produces much inexpensive bulk table wine but an influx of smaller bodegas around the turn of the millenium are producing modern-styled wines attracting international critical acclaim.
