Community Tasting Notes (average 93.7 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 30 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Vinnut on 5/1/2024 & rated 93 points: Deep dark reddish-purple in color. Full, forward, & fragrant aromas of ripe fruit aromas of cherries, blackberries & cassis with lovely overtones of dusty/earthy & floral notes, herbs, spices notes of cloves, cocoa, minerals & a bit of oak/vanilla. Full bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, ripe fruit flavors of dark cherries, blackberries & plums with spices, herbs, minerals & vanilla/oak. Long lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present with decanting & extended airing but should develop further with additional aging. An indicative blend of 98% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1% Cabernet Franc & 1% Petit Verdot. (901 views)
Tasted by MicklethePickle on 4/6/2024 & rated 93 points: Drunk mostly with Bruce, Diane, Dean and Deb last night; note is from what remained the next day. Opaque ruby. Nice fruit in the nose, and I do pick up a bit of the (good) green component Bruce mentioned last night. Much more elegant and less powerful mouthfeel than I would have expected at age 6. Certainly very good, but I expected more. 5-13-17-8: 93/100. (1597 views)
Tasted by dera on 4/5/2024 & rated 93 points: Dark opaque ruby. Initially tons of oak and vanilla on the nose but thankfully blows out after a short decant. Just your classic Napa profile with cassis, currants, vanilla, thyme. Palate has a surprising touch of acidity, well balanced, red/dark fruited. Finishes long with softened tannins. Honestly, this is a little boring, but obviously high quality. (1344 views)
Tasted by clubs on 3/12/2024 & rated 93 points: Robust flavor first night. 94
2nd night 91.
3rd night 93+.
Interesting progression. (2007 views)
Tasted by Djwpar3 on 2/11/2024 & rated 94 points: The wine is dark ruby colored, opaque. The legs are medium. There is no sediment in the bottle, decanted for 2 hours. It smells like blueberry and raspberry, with vanilla notes. on the palate, blueberry, mineral and light toast. The body is medium/full, with medium tannin. The wine has smooth texture. The wine finishes long. The wine has medium acidity, and is well balanced. A winner from Beringer, could spend another 3 years in bottle, but is lovely now. (2130 views)
Tasted by SNK65 on 1/7/2024 & rated 94 points: Excellent. Likely could use a few more years of cellaring (2092 views)
Tasted by BottleScholar on 7/24/2023: Blackberry, boysenberry, black raspberry, black cherry, pipe tobacco, forest floor, fresh oregano, some black olive tapenade, and subtle charred wood, clove, and vanilla. Oak use could have been far more prominent. Fruit nature: Extra ripe and concentrated. A nice example of a high-end Napa Cabernet Sauvignon that is more savory and restrained than most, for the region and style. Complexity: M, and should increase with age. Probably opened too young, and definitely would benefit from decanting (which I usually try to avoid or minimize). Left the last glass in the bottle overnight, and it opened up and was more enjoyable the next day, which is the basis for this note. Deep inky ruby. Concentration: H. Intensity: H. Acid: M+. Alc: H (14.8%). Finish: M. Tannin: M+, ripe and plush, fine velvet. Body: Full. Outstanding. Suitable for aging. (3073 views)
Tasted by The Drunken Cyclist on 7/6/2023 & rated 94 points: Retail $175. Big. Ass. Bottle. Under cork. 98% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot. I requested this bottle for a tasting, but it did not work out. So, some six months later, I popped the cork on the seventh anniversary of moving out of Philly, while watching Rocky, naturally. Dark, with blackberry and plum at the forefront, black pepper, clove, and even a slight herbal note (sweet basil). The palate is pretty darned fantastic with a wonderfully balanced mélange of fruit, tartness, and soft tannins. This is absolutely gangbusters now: fruity, elegant, sophisticated, and I do think that this will improve in the short-term, but I would drink up in the next 3-10 years at the latest.

Tasted by Djwpar3 on 2/3/2023 & rated 93 points: Beautiful dark color, light red rim. Dark cherries, cocoa on the nose. Very smooth, blueberries, vanilla on the palate, long finish, simply delicious. Moderate tannin, just entering drinkable window. Fair QPR. (3570 views)
Tasted by Jason Wu on 1/24/2023 & rated 96 points: Perfumed black fruit, blueberry, five spices, licorice. On the palate, it has a little bloody/ferrous note, precise, pure fruits. Like this better than the other single vineyard cab. Still a powerful wine but with finesse and persistent length. Outstanding! (3168 views)
Tasted by Mark1npt on 1/22/2023 & rated 93 points: Slow ox'd overnight by HMC and decanted before bringing to dinner tonight. Dark red/black fruit, strong graphite notes on the nose, smooth mouth feel, one that you want to swirl a bit before swallowing. Only a tad of astringency holds it back due to youth. Will most likely gain some points and round out with more aging.... (3034 views)
Tasted by AGELVIS on 1/22/2023 & rated 92 points: Slow ox overnight, followed by a four hour decant. Very deep dark vibrant magenta color. Black currant, blackberry, dark cocoa, shortbread, and mint. Smooth, dry palate, with gritty, tongue coating acidity. Firm tannins on the longish finish.

This is a serious CS, despite the descriptors. The alcohol is somewhat noticeable. HMC was kind enough to bring this to dinner with Mark1NPT and our lady friends. (2910 views)
Tasted by Cuellar's Cellar on 11/12/2022 & rated 92 points: A nice big fruit wine. Very young, and decanted for about an hour. Drinking nicely on day 2!! I would suggest holding for about 2 years!! (2380 views)
Tasted by Djwpar3 on 7/9/2022 & rated 95 points: Lush dark berries on the nose, with vanilla, oak notes. Palate coating, rich full and vibrant. THIS IS A TREAT.
Moderate tannin, long finish..good QPR. (2241 views)
Tasted by BigBoy_Sonoma on 6/11/2022 & rated 98 points: Black fruit, cedar, cocoa, chocolate, cassis, layered complexity. A+ (1985 views)
Tasted by Cuellar's Cellar on 6/7/2022 & rated 90 points: Overall good wine. Needs to mellow out a bit. Probably should decant for a few hours. Cheers (2422 views)
Tasted by Djwpar3 on 1/15/2022 & rated 93 points: Deep ruby color, vanilla, rich caramel, dark fruit nose.
Medium tannin, well balanced, full of youthful promise. 5 years would show this well, but marvelous to watch and sample the development.
93 now, 95 in 5...possibly higher. (3032 views)
Tasted by BigBoy_Sonoma on 9/25/2021 & rated 97 points: After 2013,2014,2015,2016, and 2017, it's another outstanding private reserve. When there is a string of 97+, 98+, 99+ point wines, I was looking for something more given the 2018 growing season. It reminds me of 2010 PR, which I had a few days before this tasting. I have written a lot of Beringer PR tasting notes because I drink a lot of them. https://www.cellartracker.com/list.asp?O=Rating+DESC&Table=Notes&Wine=Beringer+Vineyards+Cabernet+Sauvignon+Private+Reserve#selected%3DW2711104_1_Kdbc47812369a0ad05dd14e8bc06943e0

I still think 2015 PR or the 2016 PR were the best wine Beringer has ever made. This is a close third, but still a disappointment. Maybe my standard is too high given the string of wines produced by Laurie Hook and Mark Beringer. However, the new winemaker, Ryan did deliver.

Black fruit, red fruit, cedar, herbal notes, cassis, minerality, hints of coffee, and hints of chocolate, cedar, finish with big tannins, but it's a balanced wine. A+ (97-98).

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
