Love Mont Olivet. (268 views) | | Tasted by RichardP on 8/6/2023 & rated 91 points: Cherry and tapenade on the nose. On the palate, blackberry, olive tapenade, raspberry, and notes of black pepper and earthy spice on the medium to long finish, with moderate tannins and good acidity. This was drunk alongside a bottle of Vieux Donjon that was noticeably superior; however, this was still a good value at about $65. It is still young, and it should improve with age. Decanting might have helped, but this was opened for guests and there wasn't time for that. (1296 views) | | Tasted by Andrew_85 on 1/13/2023 & rated 94 points: Nose: cherry, blackberry, currant, anise Palate: strikes us as complex and dense. Pepper, lots of dark fruit, wood (oak vs pine) vanilla bean. Lingers for quite a while Tasted with: American Kobe strip steak and Primavera penne. Overall: this is great stuff. Honestly outstanding QpR with the complexity to price ratio. Consensus at my house 94 points (1625 views) | | Tasted by slywka7 on 4/23/2022 & rated 96 points: Decanred for 3 hours. Rest of a coravin’d bottle. Aromas raspberry Grenache, roasted herb, boysenberry , potpourri and hint of coffee. Flavors of boysenberry, raspberry Grenache, coffee, fig, iron and earth. Ends with a big finish of 40+ seconds with coffee and earth notes . Better than the last time. (2327 views) | | Tasted by SARED on 1/30/2022 & rated 92 points: Surprisingly lithe and elegant for 16% alc (makes me more comfortable with 14% Burgundy!). Had slight vanilla creaminess and New World strength of fruit, but this was well balanced, without jamminess. I enjoyed this more than I expected with good balance and fruit with more savory than overripe notest. Tannic with some grittiness. Would like to see this again in 5-10 years. Tempted to buy a couple more, but want to try again first. 92 (2465 views) | | Tasted by slywka7 on 1/22/2022 & rated 95 points: From Coravin. Poured into a glas and drank an hour later. Aromas of raspberry garnacha, cherry, lavender, boysenberry and roasted herbs. Flavors of raspberry garnacha, boysenberry, raspberry, melted chocolate and roasted herbs. Ends with a long finish of 40+ second finish with mocha and cherry notes. This is drinking very well right now. Can probably develop more with age but tough to keep your hands of now. (2826 views) | | Tasted by Jeff Leve on 1/9/2022 & rated 98 points: It is the silk and velvet textures that steal the show here. One of the most seductive wines in Chateauneuf du Pape hit a home run here. All the layers of sensuously textured red and dark red fruits, purity, elegance, flowers, kirsch, spice and herbs are in full-force on the nose and palate. This is already a pleasure to drink, but a few more years of age will make it even better. Drink from 2024 - 2038 (3906 views) | | Tasted by Jon Harrison on 10/26/2021 & rated 94 points: "Cuvée du Papet" is Mont-Olivet's top wine from its oldest Grenache vines, many of which were planted in 1901. It is produced only in the best vintages. This cuvee is a tribute to Joseph Sabon, current winemaker Thierry Sabon’s grandfather. On average, ~1,000 cases of Cuvee du Papet are made per vintage (not produced every year). _________
Color: Dark ruby. Impressive.
This is a very young, GREAT wine. So, it's not surprising that the initial smack impression from the aroma is that it's dark and brooding and a little unforthcoming. It's a little closed in the nose right now, for sure (it's a 2019 grand vin being drunk in 2021). It's more expressive and flavorful (and intense) in the mouth -where this wine is already singing and impressive indeed.
Nose: Shy but complex, cool, Mourvèdre/GR/SY driven nose of black cherry, black raspberry, with a kiss of oak and garrigue spices. Deep, black fruit, pool of purity. The MV component seems to be dominant right now.
Palate: Full body, concentrated, saturated, pure flavors of black cherry, black raspberry, garrigue wild herbs, and classic finish of black pepper. Delicious juicy acidity. *Firm, serious tannins.* No undo heat (surprisingly) given the claimed 16% alc (on label). The finish tastes like 14.5.% Very intense flavors on the finish. Palate staining. wow.
80% Grenache 15% Mourvèdre, 5% Syrah. From a GREAT producer in an (apparently) very, very good CDP vintage.
2022: 92: Nose is a little closed and undeveloped right now. 2026: 94-95: In 2026 this wine will begin to start hitting all cylinders. And will develop and evolve positively and hold until 2030-35 (in a cool, proper cellar).
JGH sommelier CMS-III , SF/Bay Area (2599 views) | | Tasted by 559Cheers on 10/22/2021 & rated 93 points: Already tasting good and will get better. I had a “Cuvee Unique” at twenty years plus and should give a score closer to 100. I feel this bottle can only get better. Alc. content is at 16. (1577 views) |

“Vineyards: The estate’s top wine, made only in the finest of vintages. A selection of fruit from the estate’s best-situated parcels: ‘Montalivet,’ ‘La Crau’, & ‘Bois Dauphin.’ The oldest parcel of Grenache vines was planted in 1901. Soils are mostly sandy, with some ‘galets roulés,’ or large quartz stones.
“Age of Vines: 30 to 100+ years
“Winemaking: Hand-harvested. Partially destemmed (60%); all grapes fermented together on indigenous yeasts in cement tank. Aged 70% in older foudre, 10% in stainless steel tank, 8% in older demi-muid, 7% in terracotta jars and 5% in older French oak barrels. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.” [Info from N. Red Rhone Blend Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.
A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce. "As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
