Tasted by sboyle on 3/22/2024 & rated 92 points: Notes of blackberry, vanilla and cedar. This is a balanced wine. You can drink it now or wait if you enjoy tertiary notes. Tannins build as you drink. This is a well made wine. (2259 views)
Tasted by JimHow on 3/7/2024 & rated 95 points: Man, I thought the 2019 Cantemerle was "the best Cantemerle ever...." Until I tried the 2020 Cantemerle! The 2020 Cantemerle is gorgeous, much different styled from the 2019, richer with more upfront fruit. The 2019 is more classic and reserved. They are obviously at different stages of evolution. The 2020 is lush, aromatic, but still very true to its terroir. Like the 2019, it is 13.5% alcohol. Distinctive rich ruby/purple color, violets, I bought 12 more bottles of the 2019 Cantemerle and last night ordered 12 more bottles of the 2020 Cantemerle. I logged the 2019 in at 95 points, I rate this 2020 at 95+.

Tasted by ManhattanBeach on 2/14/2024: With cote du boeuf at Grand Massif. PnP. Classic profile, good fruit, coolness/freshness. Fine, but didn't feel like a standout. (2753 views)
Tasted by stschutz on 2/9/2024 & rated 92 points: Fresh, uplifting, pure fruit, and a nice finish. Strong tannins and nice acidic balance make me think this will only get better with age. I don;t have the patience though here in Korea. It's either drink this now or have really bad wine elsewhere. This wine is a serious wine, and we thoroughly enjoyed it over beef, cheese, and salami dessert. W-Gidon, Hejin, Heekyung, and Mr And Mrs. (3174 views)
Tasted by Madera16 on 1/14/2024: UGC. Great! Freshness, good tannin. $28! (4032 views)
Tasted by Torchy on 12/1/2023 & rated 88 points: Dark red, dense in the glass. Lovely nose of marzipan, cassis, spices, leather, and dark fruit. The palate is dense and relatively tight with a young impression. High acidity. Blackberry, coffee, hints of mint, and leather (2249 views)
Tasted by thething135 on 11/12/2023: Pale ruby
Red berries, cherries, plum, vanillas
Medium+ body, high acidity
Nice tannins
Medium finish (4018 views)
Tasted by Motz on 9/15/2023 & rated 91 points: Typical bouquet of varieties in place, partially masked by excessive oak treatment. Blackcurrant, pyrazines, and vanilla stand out.

Medium body. Juicy, mostly purple fruits and berries. Well rounded, quite polished, a little too much. There is substance to it...but not enough to stand up to the oak treatment...or to hold beyond fifteen or so years from vintage date. Generally reminiscent of many 2012 vintage offerings.

Technically excellent, yet somewhat disappointing. This house seems to have turned to the modern style...no bell ringer. Marginal improvement seems possible. (4688 views)
Tasted by OrganicLlama on 7/19/2023 & rated 89 points: Informal tasting note:
Well balanced with earthy notes that couple with dark fruits, pears, medium astringency, medium- acids. Some rust flavors and vanilla. Bold with a memorable finish. This wine introduces itself quickly and is sharp. Very mild and white-bread flavors. (4739 views)
Tasted by Ennels on 6/4/2023 & rated 90 points: Ek, vanilj och svarta vinbär. Stram och elegant med skarpa tanniner och hög syra. Fint balanserad men lär bli ännu bättre med tiden. (5101 views)
Tasted by Ozric on 4/5/2023 & rated 93 points: Nose: Gravel, cherries, chocolate, mint, licorice, oak, earth, black currants, vanilla.

Palate: Full entry, soft dark fruit, some mushroom, wood. Soft tannins, aftertaste has roasted oak, black tea and leather.

Impressive balance, beautifully elegant acidity throughout. (5307 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 3/21/2023 & rated 92 points: Flowers, spice, black cherries, bitter chocolate, and a background note of espresso crowd into the nose. The wine is medium-bodied, vibrant, fresh and savory, with a core of sweet, ripe red fruits and touches of citrus and menthol that come in on the herbal-edged endnote. Drink from 2025-2043. (4818 views)
Tasted by FransS on 3/6/2023 & rated 93 points: The 2020 vintage UGCB tasting in Amsterdam 03/06/2023 (Amsterdam): Not as super as La Lagune, but don't miss this wine! A nearly exotic bouquet, perfumed and combined with good fruit, concentration, juicy, very good bitters and give the tannins some time de soften; a really good and balanced wine. (4456 views)
Tasted by Jake Barnes on 1/26/2023: Tasted at the UGC at the Drake Hotel in Chicago. With red over and black fruits, judicious oak, exceptional balance, and ample ripe tannins, this Cantemerle was a joy. You could drink this now it seemed. It seemed a bit more dense, concentrated, and silky than usual (probably because it was 13.5% ABV, whereas it’s usually only 13%). It had a beautiful nose. Really quite striking. 13.5% ABV. Great; distinguished/**** (3478 views)
November 2022 in Zürich) www.vvwine.ch (3575 views)
Tasted by wineforth on 11/12/2022 & rated 93 points: Lovely big nose of cedar and blackcurrant. Good fruit and typical Cantemerle balance. Very persistent finish. A more consistent Chateau over the last 50+ years than most (I still remember a lovely 1961 about 30 years ago) and good QPR. (3304 views)
Tasted by Mali on 6/21/2021 & rated 91 points: Feines, vielschichtiges Bukett. Reife Waldbeeren. Etwas Tabak. Ein saftiger Cantemerle mit seidigen Tanninen und Margaux Eleganz. Bleibt lang und ausgewogen. Der Beste der letzten Jahre. 90-92 (7498 views)
2026-2040 (April/Mai 2021) (4128 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 5/20/2021 & rated 93 points: Dark, juicy cherries, bitter chocolate, savory herbs and a touch of espresso start the wine off. Medium-bodied, bright and energetic, with a lot of lift in the red fruits on the palate, this will age and develop nicely. 92-94 (4253 views)
Tasted by chatters on 5/10/2021: Airoldi - Bordeaux En Primeur 2020 (Quay Restaurant, International Passenger Terminal, Sydney): Aromas of cream, slightly jubey blackcurrant, plums, baked earth, slight perfumed notes. Medium plus intensity acidity, quite dense on the palate, tannins present, chewy but integrated. Nice. (3691 views)
Tasted by Shrewsram on 5/4/2021 & rated 90 points: Deep appearance
Ripe nose of fat black and red fruits, quite compact, but attractive and shows some breadth.
Some density, this is supple and plump at the core but has some ‘classic’ astringency too, a tiny sappiness. Very good freshness and persistence, finishes fine. (3001 views)
Tasted by Yorgos on 4/27/2021 & rated 89 points: Medium intensity scents of red and dark cherries, red berries with some leafy elements, oak, and spice. Light to medium bodied with medium acidity and decent length. (1712 views)
Tasted by Shrewsram on 4/20/2021 & rated 89 points: Offering an attractive nose of tangy, juicy, ripe raspberry seeds, fat blackberry, and cassis, with a little roasted oak.
The palate feels very fine, with a chalky mineral quality and supple ripe tannins; this has great lift and elegance without any leanness, and finishes long and cool. (1444 views)

2020 Château Cantemerle

The Wine Society: This is one of the standout wines in 2020, which showed beautifully on each occasion that we tasted it. Cantemerle is located at the southern end of the Médoc and in good vintages like 2020 produces wines with Margaux-like perfume and poise. Superb value. Drink from 2028 to 2042. 13.5%

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Haut-Médoc

Read more about Haut Medoc and its wines Long-standing fame The legally created division into Médoc and Haut-Médoc dates from 1935. But as long ago as 1815 a Chartrons broker, whose word carried weight, spoke of great red wines in the Haut-Médoc, so recognizing the high quality successfully achieved by this region's growers in the eighteenth century. The same Bordeaux broker revealed that the business world of the Chartrons and the great Bordeaux proprietors had established a sort of league-table of the parishes in which the vine-growing communes of today's Haut-Médoc appellation showed up well.

The Haut-Médoc appellation stretches over some thirty seven miles from north to south, from Saint-Seurin de Cadourne to Blanquefort. Within this area, certain zones produce wines exclusively with the Haut-Médoc appellation. It has terroirs of remarkable quality. And although we may note a certain predominance of layers of gravel (essentially Garonne gravel) from the Quaternary, all these sites are characterized by their wide diversity. Today in the southernmost communes of the appellation, the suburbs of Bordeaux, numerous vineyards which existed at the beginning of the twentieth century have disappeared, victims of urban expansion. But the vines live on... because man has retained his devotion to them.

The astonishing variety of different terroirs, the result of the very extent of the area, explains the diversity of Haut-Médoc wines, a fact which is rare within one and the same appellation.
But, over and above the differences, linked to this mosaic of climatic and geological influence, all these wines have the same family traits of character.
Alert and lively, full-bodied without being too powerful, and harmoniously balanced, they acquire a rare bouquet over the years.

In order to have the right to the Haut-Médoc appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the communes of Blanquefort, Le Taillan, Parempuyre, Le Pian, Ludon, Macau, Arsac, Labarde, Cantenac, Margaux, Avensan, Castelnau, Soussans, Arcins, Moulis, Listrac, Lamarque, Cussac, Saint-Laurent de Médoc, Saint-Julien, Pauillac, Saint-Sauveur, Cissac, Saint-Estèphe, Vertheuil, Saint-Seurin de Cadourne "excluding all the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (48 hectolitres per hectare).
