Tasted by F1NUT on 7/6/2023 & rated 90 points: Just classic Clare Riesling nothing special in this vintage. Very nice drink but nothing noteworthy. Clear and perfect condition pure after decanting but lacking drive and finishing shorter than expected. (548 views)
Tasted by Tippler2 on 1/2/2022 & rated 95 points: Really enjoyed paired with 2007 Springvale NYE (1134 views)
Tasted by mphatic on 2/7/2021: Screwcap. Pale gold with green hue.

Pretty classic lemon, browned lime, lanolin, buttered toast, and some honey in the background. Also a breathy green apple acidity that I usually see in Grosset Rieslings.

Has quite some weight on the palate. Penetrating, flooding the palate with flavour. Very nice acid balance. Less freshness in the mouth as expected given the age. (1382 views)
Tasted by winebling on 12/6/2020 & rated 92 points: The palate is beautiful - citrus, honey, slate/gravel in the mid palate, nice weight to it and the lemon peel kicks in again at the end. Lovely drinking at the moment! (1526 views)
Tasted by Goldstone on 9/16/2020 & rated 90 points: 'Best of Australia' Dinner (Wooloomooloo Prime, 100 Nathan Road Level 21 The ONE, Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong): Medium straw yellow. Lovely slightly musty nose, slightly fermented straw. Palate is rich and full but with a lot of citric freshness followed by a chalky dryness. Unusual combination of German black rye bread with a touch of drizzled honey on it. Almost a fresh almonds note on the finale then gets more chalky and refined with extended time in the glass. Real depth of resonance on the finish. Gorgeous. Thanks, Jeremy! (1880 views)
Tasted by tanduybui on 6/24/2020 & rated 92 points: A most excellent Clare Valley riesling. Secondary and tertiary characteristics have now developed so the nose was floral, citrus with a soft layer honey note. Body had excellent length accompanied by flinty structure, lime and very light on its feet. Several reviewers have made comment about kerosene etc. I have been drinking Grosset Riesling since the 1998 vintage and while it may be there, it has never been dominant nor an issue. On a good year and a good bottle, it’s a wonderful wine. (1415 views)
Tasted by andrewstevenson.com on 6/28/2019 & rated 88 points: Quite a smoky riesling nose, with some petrol and stony minerality. Very attractive nose.
A good maturing riesling. There are probably decades ahead of it. Good fruit on the palate, though possibly a bit closed. Quite a spicy limey acidity on the finish.
Didn't seem quite as impressive as it should be. (1243 views)
Tasted by mphatic on 4/15/2019: Screwcap, 13% alc. Very pale lime-yellow.

Reticent nose of limes and kero, chalk and white flowers.
Similar flavours on the palate. Crystalline purity. Delicacy with power. Some milky/lactic notes evident.

Opinion: Unevolved in colour, flavour. Destined for a longer life. (381 views)
Tasted by allenAchilles on 11/12/2018: FINALLY. Down to my last bottle. Can't say I have really enjoyed this wine very much over the years. Way too much petrol for me, which is not my definition of Riesling. A bit of a poor choice and at $40 a bottle a bad choice. (1154 views)
Tasted by salil on 4/21/2017 & rated 91 points: Nice showing. Lots of bright tart lime and Meyer lemon fruit at its core, framed by flint, petrol, and some reductive notes, with bright acidity beneath giving it plenty of lift and energy. Remarkably light on its feet and it never once feels austere despite its dryness. (2624 views)
Tasted by acyso on 4/21/2017 & rated 90 points: Indianapolis II; 4/21/2017-4/22/2017 (Indianapolis, IN): This is a fairly good dry riesling, with a massive dose of reduction on the nose. This has a bit of popcorn on the nose, as well as a lot of flinty minerality. The palate isn't waxy or heavy, but it is primarily driven by fleshy ripe fruit and a fair bit of acidity. Quite novel, this is nothing like a dry Austrian, Alsatian, or German -- quite unique and speaks well of its origins. (2863 views)
Tasted by Villon on 4/8/2017 & rated 91 points: Intense et puissant, assez long, mais peut-être en léger manque de délicatesse et de complexité. (2137 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 12/2/2016 & rated 80 points: Bone dry. Not very giving or particularly enjoyable. (2064 views)
Tasted by Blacksmith450 on 1/3/2016 & rated 89 points: Trop de pétrole au nez... l'ensemble en bouche est agréable. (3309 views)
Tasted by ccn on 12/6/2015 & rated 91 points: developped significantly over 1-2 hours -- would decant next time. Gorgeous, delicate and complex petrol, kaffir lime leaf, racy acidity, decent body, and great length. Think this will continue to develop (1568 views)
Tasted by Villon on 11/30/2015 & rated 91 points: 91+, austère le 1er soir, plus souple et complexe le 2e, encore jeune! (1736 views)
Tasted by matt182 on 10/1/2015 & rated 89 points: Classic oil lamp, kerosene, petrol nose...no doubt it's riesling. Saturated gold color, with some air, candied citrus and honey dominating the nose, paired really well with confit tandoori chicken and dal, quite impressed with a good acid kick that balance this wine. A bit one dimensional... Ready to go. (1752 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 3/16/2015: Pure and lean. Not quite as dramatic as some of the Rieslings we had on this day. (2086 views)
Tasted by Avid Wino on 11/30/2014 & rated 93 points: A honeyed delight. Citrus, rubber, mineral. Textural. (1485 views)
Tasted by JonnyG on 10/4/2014 & rated 89 points: This bottle was not quite right, ponderously heavy. All the right notes: rubber, oil, lime, but lacking in any finesse. (1675 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 8/23/2014 & rated 91 points: A private lunch (Restaurant Hertog Jan ***, Zedelgem, Belgium): Intense but youthful appearance, an almost absinthe-like greenish lemon colour; lovely nose, citrus and minerals, herbs, attractive petrol note; the palate is juicy and ripe, on the softer side for Polish Hill, seems slightly looser than usual but charming and well-balanced, with lovely citrus flavours; very good length. (2084 views)
Tasted by mphatic on 4/5/2014: Still maintains the intense nose and palate from youth. Acidity sticking out a bit making less approachable, but put on weight after open for a couple of days. Leave for a few years. (243 views)
Tasted by depechemoroder on 2/3/2014 & rated 89 points: Monster of a wine. Big nose full of petrol, rubber, and some savoury notes akin to smoked meat. Not much fruit on the nose, but a bit of honeysuckle perhaps. Unctuous in the mouth, savoury qualities offset by flavours of lime, mandarin, and blossom. Lovely minerality and acidity. Lots of complexity here but was hoping for a bit more fruit. Perhaps my bottle was going through a teenage stage. (2071 views)
Tasted by Avid Wino on 1/27/2014 & rated 92 points: Lime, slate, little rubber, petrol. Honeyed notes as the wine airs and warms in the glass, some apple and mandarin too. Excellent balance and length. (1846 views)
Tasted by pcwoz on 11/30/2013 & rated 90 points: Drinking really well (1623 views)

Grosset

Producer website

U.S. Importer (Addt'l Info)

Grosset Wines is an independently owned winery producing seven highly regarded premium wines each vintage.

Established in 1981, the winery is situated in the historic township of Auburn at the southern tip of the Clare Valley, 100 kilometres north of Adelaide.

While in its fourth decade, annual production is capped at 11,000 cases (dozens), predominantly produced from twenty two hectares of estate vineyards. Remaining small and focused has allowed Grosset to preserve the character and individuality of the wines, developing a significant international profile by producing wines deemed consistently outstanding, benchmarks in their class.

Jeffrey Grosset, owner and founder, has always been an innovator, challenging tradition and questioning accepted practices.

He campaigned to institute the legal integrity of the riesling grape in Australia, was a leading proponent for the introduction of screwcap closures and privately funded research into the subject.

Grosset Wines’ philosophy has remained steadfast over thirty years. The emphasis is on purity of fruit.

The organically managed vineyards are hand tended, and each bunch of grapes is harvested at optimum ripeness. The winemaking process is gentle and uncomplicated.

With dedication, discipline and the application of knowledge garnered through decades of experience, the result is the finest expression of variety and place.

Jeffrey Grosset was voted the inaugural Australian Winemaker of the Year by Gourmet Traveller WINE in 1998, and is internationally recognised as one of the ‘Top 10 White Winemakers’ (Decanter, UK) and one of the ‘50 Most Influential Winemakers’ (Wine & Spirits, USA) in the world today.

2007 Grosset Riesling Polish Hill Clare Valley

Winery's notes: "Careful work in the vineyard, especially with fruit thinning to compensate for the dry conditions leading up to harvest, meant that 2007 was yet another good year for 'Polish Hill' Riesling. With the fruit coming solely from the Grosset Polish Hill Vineyard, the wine is very much in the style that followers of Grosset have learnt to expect over the previous 26 vintages. It has gentle aromatics with some lemony, lime aromas, mouth-puckering zesty lime and slatey, minerally quartz characters, is tightly coiled on a lean, austere palate before a taut, racy finish that lingers long and ultra-dry. The 2007 Grosset Polish Hill Riesling has finesse, delicacy and balance and yet is bound in a stark, steely frame that time will transform. An extraordinary and seamless wine that has appeal now and one that should show that drought need not mean compromise."

Polish Hill

Grosset Polish Hill is produced exclusively from the eight-hectare estate-owned Polish Hill Vineyard (certified organic) in the Clare Valley. The gently sloping site, selected and planted by Grosset more than two decades ago, is comprised of silt and shallow shales over a thin crust of clay and gravel. This overlays a bed of blue slate, estimated to be around 500-million-years old.

This ‘hard rock’ site was originally part of a larger estate but was considered to be of limited agricultural value and so was sold off. The vines here struggle to draw nutrients from the soil, so the bunches and berries are small, and the fruit flavours lean and austere. Indeed, this vineyard exemplifies how old-rock profiles can contribute to a wine’s character.

Relatively close-planted to three clones (two German and one rare local clone), this organic vineyard is completely tended by hand; hand-pruning, shoot and crop adjustment and 100% hand harvesting ensure pristine quality organic fruit is delivered to the (ACO certified) organic status winery at Auburn.

No tillage is employed and no fertilisers are introduced: a mix of natural and introduced clovers and grasses are maintained between the vines and allowed to self-seed.

Since the first striking example of the wine in 1981, Grosset has maintained a winemaking approach which brings out the best of this unique site.

Its challenging rocky profile results in low yields with an average of two bottles of wine per vine being produced.

‘We planted the Polish Hill vineyard in 1996, following years of research into the influences of soil, rock and altitude on riesling. Being a hard rock site overlaid with silty, low fertility soils, the vines struggle and crops are low. While challenging to manage, the result is strikingly different.’ JG
