Community Tasting Notes (average 91.5 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 112 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Somm David T on 1/1/2024 & rated 95 points: From mag. An amazing follow up to the 2007 Haut Bailly. This 2002 is still young. Five hours in decanter and just starting to blossom. This in mag hasn’t hit its peak…might be another 10 years plus.

Second night notes with leftover Prime Rib, au Gratin Potatoes & Brussels Sprouts. I knew that this would be even better in the second night than it was the first. Heitz makes hardy wine that are very age worthy.

Last night it showed more brawn/teeth. It still does but shows much more blue and purple fruits. It is purely, lush, ruby, round in the mouth. Bramble fruits of, blackberries, black plum, black raspberries, boysenberries, blueberries, plum, wafting raspberries. Dry, strong tobacco, leather, cedar, sandalwood to barrel shavings, Rutherford dust, melted, dark chocolate, black licorice, dry top soil, tumble weed, dark spice with some heat, dry herb notes, a touch of black pepper, dry, crushed rocks, dark withering florals, lavender framed in violets, beautiful round acidity, extremely well balanced, structured, tenioned, multi- layered excellent beautiful finish that lasts minutes.

Another 20 years in mag…properly stored of course. (378 views)
Tasted by Hanibal on 9/29/2022 & rated 92 points: Would benefit from a decant. Was better the next day. Not heavy with very clean fruit. (1282 views)
Tasted by RojoVino24 on 12/18/2021 & rated 94 points: First Trailside I’ve tried. 2.5hr decant. Wow, this was good juice. Comfort blanket on the nose. Chocolate, cassis, black olive and berry. Tons of vegetable. Rosemary, spearmint & fresh garden peppers. Well rounded on the mid and back. Has another year or two imo. Heitz never disappoints. (1264 views)
Tasted by Hanibal on 8/14/2021 & rated 93 points: This seemed even younger than the one I had last year. Very concentrated cream of cassis and very well balanced. Very long. This is still improving. Be patient (2174 views)
Tasted by jeremy_ross on 6/18/2021 & rated 90 points: Olives and burnt honey on nose. Still has solid acid and grippy tannins. The fruit is intense, a little honeyed and oxidized. (1549 views)
Tasted by mfreund72 on 6/18/2021 & rated 91 points: First I got olives and topsoil on the nose, then Smokey BBQ. Juicy with slight tannins (1399 views)
Tasted by jpwineguy on 2/14/2021 & rated 95 points: Just starting to enter the height of its drinking plateau, this was a really magical bottle. Full of cassis, turned earth, plum sauce, leather and dried herbs on the nose, the first sniff put a huge smile on my face. The palate was elegant and supple, with medium body, medium minus acid and moderate length. Similar tasting notes as the nose, cigar box, creme de cassis, herbs, touch of bell pepper, hint of lavender, with very textured but soft tannin.
This is just entering it's peak so if you have a bottle it can definitely age another five plus years, but I don't see it getting significantly better from here. (1214 views)
Tasted by Colonyhkman on 1/8/2021: A beautiful deep red. (775 views)
Tasted by Hanibal on 10/16/2020 & rated 93 points: 2 hour decant brought out all that rich fruit flavor...very long...on its plateau for still many years (1099 views)
Tasted by SpoochMan on 5/15/2020 & rated 94 points: Last bottle of the '02 and it was terrific. Still very vibrant fruit shaded with nice herbal notes (including a bit of eucalyptus). This has very lively acidity that keeps it from being heavy, and makes it pair well with food. Was great with a steak but also enjoyable on its own with some hard cheese. CT says drink by 2021, but if your bottles were in the kind of shape that mine were, then they should be good for at least a few more years beyond that. I bought mine directly from Heitz a few years back before the family sold out and the new owners jacked up all the prices and removed most of the library wines from the website. They have more than doubled the price of older vintages available on the website. Just a tragic shame what the new owners did to Heitz; the wines are essentially no longer affordable to me, especially the older vintages. What a bummer... (980 views)

Tasted by jkm011 on 12/28/2019: Past the prime. Can still drink with nose pinched and a decant. (1034 views)
Tasted by TheShrimpRider on 11/6/2019 & rated 90 points: I enjoyed the wine but it had a huge bell pepper nose. Most people didn't enjoy it because of the nose while others were okay with it. I wouldn't buy it again. 3 hour decant (1203 views)
Tasted by kbabinski on 6/8/2019 & rated 94 points: Opened, decanted and drank over 3 hours with steak. So surprised by the length here. A definite treat! (1370 views)
Tasted by Bottledrainer on 1/27/2019 & rated 92 points: Decanted and let it open up for 4 hours. Our patience was rewarded with a lush wine. Plums and blackberry with a long finish. (1307 views)
Tasted by jgreco on 1/12/2019 & rated 94 points: A wonderfully delicate nose of fennel and lead pencil. At first, we were shocked as to how much red fruit was left in the wine. The wine felt like a toddler, not one approaching nearly 17 years! Within an hour though the wine transformed itself into something that was far more dark and brooding. I think the wine has hit its peak so I would be included to drink any remaining bottles over the next 5 years. (1351 views)

Tasted by arthurogus on 11/25/2018 & rated 93 points: A beautiful wine. The cork broke, even though I had stored i horizontally and used a Screwpull, and so I decanted it through an aerator with a filter. Two hours later the wine was delicious, with an excellent balance of acidity and tannins, and a very long and complex finish, with anise notes and fruit along with the tannin. Served with squab, a real success. (1082 views)
Tasted by gmbdds on 11/10/2018 & rated 92 points: Cork broke. Used Vinturi to filter, not decanted. Lots of cassis and tart blackberry. Tannic structure still present and well informed by oak. This could be at peak, but the hint of tertiary character makes me think it would be worth trying at age 25. Paired well with filets but worth contemplation on its own. (865 views)
Tasted by Frank Schneider on 10/28/2018 & rated 94 points: Fabulous wine ! Absolutely mature and a point ! Splash decant and enjoyed. The big herbal opera ! Loooooong finish. All in !!! I love it ! Ready for Rockn Roll !!! Drink (951 views)
Tasted by j30 on 8/5/2018 & rated 92 points: Showing beautifully tonight with elegent fruity and leafy nose and a soft juicy palate. Fully integrated without hard edges, this went well with Peking Duck and was enjoyed by everyone. (1249 views)

Tasted by Mrp2008 on 12/31/2017 & rated 93 points: Father in law brought a bottle over recently that was on point and decided to buy more. First bottle the cork disintegrated and was vinegar. On this bottle the cork broke in half but was quite lively. Fruit still looks youthful although mature it will hold for at least 5 years with a good bottle, some ten. Still some tannin to resolve but really nice, decent acidity and just a hint of green pepper. (2076 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

Trailside Vineyard

The Trailside Vineyard is a prime slice of Rutherford dirt, hugging the Silverado Trail on its east side and descending at a grade of roughly 2% until its opposite boundary nudges the banks of the Conn Creek.
This fertile belt of gravelly, well-drained soil stretches out on the eastern side of the valley where the trellised plants can soak up the radiant afternoon sunshine. The vines consistently produce deep purple grapes
bursting with an extra ripeness and intensity that flaunts their Rutherford pedigree.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
