Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.7 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 58 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Islamabadbadbad on 5/19/2024 & rated 90 points: Big, masculine, well structured wine. Nose with meaty, cured salami notes up front, followed by equally powerful red fruit like cherries, raspberries, and a hint of blackberry, some vanilla, tamarind. Palate is medium bodied, well structured with nice medium plus acid and plus plus tannins, dry, mild EtOH. Very good, and a killer at the price point. Drinks well, will probably hold up and develop for 10 years at least. (85 views)
Tasted by zovagio on 5/2/2024 & rated 84 points: Ottima qualità prezzo, buona acidità, leggermente finale amarostico (411 views)
Tasted by sid_loves_wine on 4/29/2024 & rated 92 points: Very delicious and fresh; yet I'm rating it a point lower than the last vintage I tasted (2018) as this was a bit more natty/funky, vibrant but less focused, compared to the super fresh and precise (but also clean and dialed-in) 2018. This 2020 showed lots of slightly funky strawberry, raspberry etc with a bit of salty umami and beautiful, gentle tannins. I like that the high acid is pretty well-integrated, not too puckery, but the fermentation is a little wild, giving it a faint kombucha character. My first instinct when blind tasting was some very natty Pinot Noir, and I couldn't figure out the region whatsoever. (619 views)
Tasted by Takao on 4/20/2024 & rated 90 points: Deep ruby color. Med plus aromas of black cherry, red plum, black berry, blueberry, cedar, toast, violet, leather, some VA, and a bit of orange peel and coffee. Really good balance of fruits, floral notes and earthiness. Fruits are just ripe. Though color is young there’s some tertiary notes. Dry, med plus body, high acid, grainy, med(+) tannins, long finish. Good now but think it has a space for improvement over time. Thought a darker Pinot but this is Bierzo Tinto. Maybe grainy, slightly stalky tannin quality is the key - not really common for PN, but this might be just the producer’s style due to high whole cluster percentage. This got less interesting over time in a glass losing fresh fruits and gaining stemmy spiciness. There is a bit of bitterness on the palate probably from the stem. Fantastic value. 90+ (575 views)
Tasted by Richard123 on 4/5/2024 & rated 89 points: Very heavy on the barnyard when opened... Air reduced the impact to balance it out, overall good after the time open. (726 views)
Tasted by Porco do vinho on 3/5/2024 & rated 90 points: Really easy to drink: fresh, juicy and elegant. Barnyard with berries and cherry. Lacking a bit in body and acidity, but a pleasure nonetheless. Good QPR (929 views)
Tasted by DevenStephens on 2/11/2024 & rated 90 points: Amazing QPR here! Such an elegant wine with so much to unpack. The nose is fresh with Strawberry, raspberry and pomegranate. The palate is almost crunchy with sour cherries, strawberries, pomegranate again, violets, spice and a touch of barnyard funk. Mencia isn't something I drink often but it is a very interesting grape with a lot of complexity and so far I don't think anybody does it better than Raul Pérez. I've tried most of what he makes and so far none have been disappointing. So for 25$ this is great! (1066 views)
Tasted by prasm on 2/9/2024 & rated 89 points: Howard Street Wine Tasting - Medium intensity with aromas of raspberry and cherry with subtle notes of violets and spice. On the palate - medium body, medium intensity, medium body, medium acid, medium- tannin with flavors of red fruit, spice and earthy notes with a medium finish. (931 views)
Tasted by WineSpinWijngarage on 1/23/2024: Mooi nu, for this money. (1279 views)
Tasted by Cote d'Or on 1/13/2024: Bottle from restaurant, tasted over 2 hrs
-med dark red purple
-wet stone mild funk black cherry, tar, iodine
-med acidity, med weight and concentration earthy dark fruit, med/med+ tannins
-nice, a bit closed down needs a bit more time to open up (1144 views)
Tasted by loj on 12/26/2023 & rated 90 points: As others have stated, a very finely made wine with great structure, ruby, and minor bret.

I was astounded by the flesh/blood note on opening. And lingers for a while before dissipating. (1088 views)
Tasted by Androurse on 12/25/2023 & rated 90 points: The wine looks purple colored. The legs are slow. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like blackberry, cranberry and strawberry jam. It tastes like blackberry, cranberry, black currant (cassis), cinnamon and stoniness. The body is medium/full. The wine has round texture. The wine finishes long. The wine has high acidity. (858 views)
Tasted by grapenomad on 12/16/2023 & rated 91 points: Moderate ruby in the glass. Great, pronounced aromatics leaning towards red berry fruit (raspberry, cherry, cranberry) and ripe blackberry, plum. Some steminess as well. Medium-bodied, subtle tannins, high acidity. Long finish with slight bitterness and some green hints. Drink now or leave for 5-6 years easy. Very well-made wine, representative of the region and grape. (1047 views)
Tasted by ElJefeTX on 11/12/2023 & rated 90 points: A little brett funk on the nose which blows off over time revealing more herbal and damp forest aromas. The palate has a stiff spine of acidity with vibrant notes of cranberry, pomegranate, charred cedar, leather and crushed rocks. Fine tannins and a tart finish. Better with food. (1211 views)
Tasted by Alexander Smith on 11/2/2023 & rated 89 points: 100% Mencia from one of 'the top wineries of Spain' . I have been excited to taste this winery for a while, a lot of good press View from the Cellar a stellar 93, WA 94. However it certainly does not score that high, a 89 at max. The nose is full of dark cherry, crushed stones, gravely smoky a little earth and black pepper as well. The palate shows red fruit with layers of granite and smoky leather, lots of power and 'minerality' as well on the mid palate. This needs food, my guess, and a guess it is, is this needs a a little time to come around, the wine is fine, and has a certain style but 93/94 is a little stretch. (1338 views)
Tasted by Mike Kopanski on 10/14/2023 & rated 88 points: Shows some of the softness and delicacy of whole cluster fermentation. Quite dark color. Just past medium bodied. More tannic than expected. Pretty intense red and dark fruit. Some Pinot like earthy funk. Still young. Soft blueberry and boysenberry lingering finish. (1182 views)
Tasted by gstutz on 9/24/2023 & rated 83 points: Earth and some funk on nose. Nice fruit on first taste, like a fresh current, with some Pinot likel notes and fades to acidic finish with earth. On the lighter side. I liked better than most at the table, who did not care for the funk.

Got thinner with time and as it warmed. Would not buy again. (1275 views)
Tasted by Derek Darth Taster on 8/31/2023 & rated 91 points: Pop and pour at home. Drank in Gabriel Standart.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, purplish ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is not clean, with aromas of brett funk animal, violets, dark red cherries, boysenberries, licorice and spice. Developing.
On the palate, dry, juicy high acidity, medium alcohol (13.5%), medium+ tannins, medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of red plum, dark red cherries, boysenberries, underlying herbal character and iodine mineral, smoked meat ?bacon and leather, spice. Medium+ finish.
Very good quality. Really quite nice drinking in a youthful way and already showing good complexity. Can age a bit, but really no harm drinking em young. Doubt its enjoyability beyond 5+ years also anyway. (1539 views)
Tasted by Sashimie on 8/26/2023: Deep purp. Black cherry and loam on the nose.
In the mouth, black cherry on entry with fennel and black licorice. Understated acidity allows the herbal quality to shine through. Iodine salt picks up in the mid and lingers through the finish. The combination of licorice, cherry, and iodine is medicinal and even comes off a bit funky when warm. I enjoy this but I can see how not everyone would. (1005 views)
Tasted by AlphaMikeFoxtrot on 8/26/2023 & rated 82 points: Barnyard, hose blanket, chicken coop...yep, there is definitely some brett on the nose of this. And look, I know a lot of wines (Bordeaux, Loire Cab Franc) I enjoy have SOME brett on them; but there's a line of how much I tolerate. This unfortuantely crossed that line for me, especially on the nose. It got to the point where I enjoyed drinking the wine; but not smelling it.

Anyway, the funky aromas are thankfully complimented by those of tobacco, smoked cedar wood, ripe dark plums and ripe black cherries. The palate adds citrus, especially orange peel. The dark fruits stay as well and the finish shows flavors of ash and raw red meat.

Medium body with medium acid and medium + tannin. Good length of finish, which is what saved this from being scored below 80. The tannins tell me it could age a little bit longer, so maybe 2-3 more years in the bottle will calm the funk. (1165 views)
Tasted by admid on 8/24/2023 & rated 91 points: Very closed and little to get out of it.
Opened up the third day, with beautiful nose of cherries, dark berries and liqourice.
Still closed palate, so I guess a couple of more years are needed. (1021 views)
Tasted by melvinyeowq on 8/8/2023 & rated 90 points: Liu Fu Si Fang Cai: Had some funk on the nose. Initial acidity and tannic bite receded with air. Dark red fruit with some savoury bacon notes, good pizza wine. (1436 views)
Tasted by FjordogFjell on 8/5/2023 & rated 88 points: Ostebit og film. Forsmak: rik og solid juice. Hagebær, middels tannin, fin syre, (954 views)
Tasted by dnlng on 7/10/2023 & rated 91 points: Amazing value! It has many elements beyond its values! Well balanced acidity at a medium body. Delicious berry notes. Herbal and earthy nose. I will try more Raul Perez! (1142 views)
 Tasted by ChillReel on 7/7/2023 & rated 90 points: 1 of 4.

PnP. I was not expecting this wine to be this good! Very well balanced, fresh, nothing to complain about.

Small red fruits. A bit of tannins, just enough to make you come back for another sip. Good acidity with a medium finish length.

Will drink with smoked ribs later on. (1030 views)

Mencía

Mencia is grown in the Northwestern region of Spain near the borders of Galicia, Leon, and Zamora. Mencia produces fruity wines of great color, acidity and aging potential. It is sweet and aromatic, with a good dose of alcohol. The vines produce medium-sized clusters and fruit.

The reds made from Mencia have a characteristic velvety palate. Traditional reds are pale, fragrant and light wines. Modern winemakers are creating bolder reds, of higher concentration, expressing Mencia’s aromas and freshness. Many wineries are taking advantage of the variety ability to aging.

Rose wines are aromatic and fruity, lively, light and soft.

Spain

Vinos de España - Wines of Spain (Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior) | Wikipedia
Wine Map on weinlagen-info

Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous [sic] Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net

Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos (when sweetened). But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial). Based on in-spain.info.

Castilla y León

Castilla y León Wine (Turismo Castilla y León )

Bierzo

[[D.O.]] Bierzo is located on the western edge of the province of [[León]], next to the [[Galicia|Galician]] border. The region has a distinct microclimate, being at relatively low altitude and protected on both sides by mountains, marking a transition between the arid [[meseta]] and verdant Galicia.

The Santiago de Compostela pilgrim route passes directly through the region and the predominant red grape, [[Mencía]], was allegedly introduced by pilgrims. Mencía makes up 70% of planting and many wines are 100% Mencía. [[Garnacha Tintorera]] is the secondary red grape, although there are also experimental plantings of other varieties, including [[Merlot]] and [[Cabernet Sauvignon]]. Whites may contain [[Godello]], [[Doña Blanca]], [[Palomino]] and [[Malvasia]].

Bierzo produces much inexpensive bulk table wine but an influx of smaller bodegas around the turn of the millenium are producing modern-styled wines attracting international critical acclaim.
