Tasted by goldenplover on 1/28/2024 & rated 85 points: Unimpressive. Having previously enjoyed the other Ca'Marcanda wines I expected more. I'm not sure what the idea is with this blend, but it lacks complexity and any interest for me. There are many fruity, easy drinking reds you can obtain for half the money. (917 views)
Tasted by El_Dougo on 4/1/2023: High acidity. Apparently the salesperson who sold this wine to our group member said to open 30 main before serving, probably to close the sale.
Never one to knock Gaja, this bottle had the most juice left remaining at the end of a long evening, which tells you something… (3146 views)

Tasted by ppandian on 12/26/2022 & rated 90 points: A nice Merlot dominant blend. Balanced, slightly fruit forward, nice tannins. Easy drinking. (2961 views)
Tasted by tony8 on 12/2/2022 & rated 92 points: Had this in Dallas at Al Biernats. Merlot, Syrah and Sangiovese. Quite an interesting super Tuscan Looks and smells like more Bordeaux then Tuscany. Plum, sweet Basil/mint and licorice. To me this is a steak wine as I think it’s a bit to concentrated for pasta or pizza. Good balance with a long smooth finish. Silky tannins. Drinks well now but could benefit from another 2 years. (1330 views)
Tasted by MAXIMUM SATISFACTION on 11/16/2022 & rated 92 points: Agree with prior tasters. International style, not interesting but a decent starter or finisher. The plushness or the Merlot and game of the Syrah come through but overall the presentation is too Napa for me. Ripe plums, blueberries, vanilla, and damp earth. Really the more I write the more I like it at $40 but just not Gaja quality in any way. (1479 views)
Tasted by oldwines on 11/7/2022 & rated 89 points: Tasted at a charity tasting event sponsored by a retailer in NJ. Heavy wine, that is Merlot dominant yet harsh on the tannins. Big International style, uninteresting to me. (1419 views)
Tasted by JOthewineguy on 9/10/2022 & rated 89 points: Nice starter wine (1090 views)

Ca' Marcanda (Gaja)

Can you visit?
Never have appointments been quite so exclusive as at this famed Barbaresco winery, founded in 1859 and now run by the fifth generation of the Gaja family. The gates were opened up to the public in 2014 but you'll only enter into these romantic courtyards after a sizeable donation to charity.

Founded in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja, this prestigious wine estate has been handed down through five generations of the Gaja family. Fourth generation Angelo Gaja is the estate’s current owner. Gaja has 110 ha of vineyard holdings in Tuscany (Montalcino, Castagneto and Bolgheri) and Piedmont (Barbaresco and Barolo). Acquired in 1994 by the Gaja family, Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta is an estate in Brunello di Montalcino. The name refers to the Pieve or Parish Church of Saint Restituta located on the property. The 17.6 ha vineyard is located in the south-west subzone of the appellation on white, rocky soils, which over the years has proven to produce some of the region’s finest wines. A second vineyard of 11 ha was bought on the north-eastern sub-zone in 2006. Pieve Santa Restituta produces a classic, blended Brunello di Montalcino and two vineyard-designated wines, Brunello di Montalcino Sugarille and Brunello di Montalcino Rennina.

2020 Ca' Marcanda (Gaja) Promis Toscana IGT

The grapes are grown in the terre brune (rich, dark soils) of Bolgheri and in the neighbouring area of Bibbona. Aged in slightly used barriques for 12 months followed by several months of bottle aging.

Promis represents the combination of grapes from Gaja’s two Tuscan estates – Merlot and Syrah from Ca’Marcanda and Sangiovese from Pieve Santa Restituta. The three varieties are fermented separately and then blended in January or February after harvest. Aged for 18 months in slightly used barriques, followed by several months of bottle aging.

Wine description
This wine from Cantina Ca' Marcanda is the result of a combination of grape varieties that recall the French tradition and the historical incursions suffered by the territory of the upper Maremma. The use of vines that for 55% are of Merlot, for 35% of Syrah, and for 10% of Sangiovese. The different vineyards, both in Bolgheri and in the surrounding area of Bibbona, planted mainly on brown lands rich in silt and clay. The vinification provides that the grapes according to the variety carry out fermentation and maceration separately for about 15 days. After 12 months of aging in wood, the wine is blended and a few months in bottle before being marketed, after which it ages for 18 months in barrique and is characterized by an easy drink, which is combined with a magnificent aromatic complexity, to create a label that travels on unthinkable levels to reach the most.

Features of Toscana "Promis"
Deep ruby red in colour with purple hues. 2020 Promis is fruit-driven, mainly wild fruits: raspberry, black currant, and blueberry. Pink peppercorns and liquorice notes come forward on the nose. This wine is medium bodied with round tannins and refreshing acidity. It opens with aromatic herbs, followed by blackberry and black cherry ending with a savoury hint of olive.

Recommended pairings tasting this wine of Ca' Marcanda
A wine to reserve for important occasions, can be combined with duck with honey stuffed. The ideal serving temperature is between 16-20ºC in a very large glass that allows the wine to oxygenate before tasting.

Vintage

The last months of 2019 were very rainy in Montalcino, November in particular, with 250 mm of rainfall approximately. 2020 winter until late March was dry with temperatures above the seasonal average. In the second half of March, exactly at the end of pruning, the temperatures dropped drastically for a month, reaching -5°C and causing some problems with frost. The following months were hot, but not excessively, and were characterized by significant temperature variations at night. Tramontana winds – cold air coming in from the norther Apennine Mountains – in conjunction with heat peaks that reached 31°C on September 12th, accompanied the Sangiovese until its full ripeness. The harvest began on eptember 15th at Pieve Santa Restituta. The grape clusters were sparse and small, the berries well ripened, rich in sugars and in polyphenolic compounds.

Ca' Marcanda (Gaja) Promis Toscana IGT

Ca' Marcanda's proprietary name Promis (pronounced proh-MEESS) was created by the Gaja family to denote commitment, expectation, fulfilment, and hope.

The promise of quality and the reward of diligence and excellence. A red wine blend of Merlot (55%), Syrah (35%) and Sangiovese (10%),

the grapes are grown in the terre brune (rich, dark soils) of Bolgheri and in the neighbouring area of Bibbona. Aged in slightly used barriques for 12 months followed by several months of bottle ageing before release,

Promis offers the elegance and suppleness of Merlot and Syrah, complemented by the vibrant structure of Sangiovese, Tuscany’s emblematic grape. Promis opens with floral aromas of wild rose and violet, then it turns into a more earthy bouquet with hints of maritime pine, eucalyptus and wet stone. The palate is fresh and juicy, with notes of red and black fruits - raspberry, wild strawberry and mulberry - alongside creamy, smooth tannins. The final is sapid with a smoky and spicy character. With its notes of rosemary, wild fennel and embers Promis perfectly mirrors the Mediterranean scrubland which surrounds it.

SuperTuscan Blend

SuperTuscan Blend refers to wines which feature a significant Sangiovese component combined with grapes not traditionally associated with Italy like Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon. This separates it from "Sangiovese blend" which is used for wines which are predominantly Sangiovese and combined with traditional Italian varieties. There is often confusion as many wines most famous associated with the term "Super Tuscan" like Sassicaia, Masseto and Ornellaia have no Sangiovese and are properly linked to 'Red Bordeaux Blend.'

In fact, Super Tuscan was a term coined to refer specifically to wines such as Sassicaia and Tignanello. These were wines that "fell out" of the official DOCG classification of Italian wines because they either contained grapes not permitted (international varietals such as cabernet sauvignon or merlot,) were aged differently (I.e. in barrique) or were 100% sangiovese - which was not permitted at the time for Chianti (E.g. Fontodi Flaccianello.) Forced to be classified as simply "Vina di Tavola" these wines nontheless quickly found favour in international markets and comanded prices above the highest quality DOCG Chianti Classico & Brunello di Montalcino wines at the time. The wine industry and press began to refer to these wines as SuperTuscans because of their popularity and quality, but also because of the prices they commanded. Subsequently, the Italian authorities, under the Goria Law 1992, redrew the classifications, and included the category IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) to classify the SuperTuscans.
