Tasted by Southkevin2 on 11/3/2023 & rated 93 points: Takes a long time to open up, but after two hours, the alcohol burns off and leaves a classic CDP nose and palate of peppery goodness (743 views)
Tasted by RLVas on 10/21/2023 & rated 92 points: Medium plus body, Smooth and very flavorful. I recommend this CdP and great value under $40. I’d repeat! (Enjoyed at Roux) (851 views)
Tasted by BårdKB on 10/1/2023 & rated 89 points: Lite kjent med cdp. Mørke røde bær, syltetøy, vanilje. Godt med syre og lengde. (783 views)
Tasted by La Cave d'Argent on 8/29/2023 & rated 92 points: Vieux Lazaret's 2020 Châteauneuf is a medium-to-deep ruby blend of 67% Grenache, 22% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre and 6% other conforming varietals (Cinsault, Carignan, Counoise, Terret, Picpoul, Muscardin, Picardan, Bourboulenc, Clairette and Roussanne). Decanted through a Vinturi aerator, this bottle was allowed four hours in carafe prior to sampling over a 2-3 hour interval. Intensely aromatic, it serves up a package of dark bramble fruits, Bing cherries, dried apricots, Provençal herbs, sandalwood and licorice. Medium-bodied and well-cut, it delivers flavors congruent with the aromas, adding notes of black olive tapenade and pickling spice. The alcohol (listed as 14.5%) is restrained, as are the wine's oak and fine-grained tannins. Solid in the middle and lengthy on the back end, this is a Châteauneuf that will have broad appeal by virtue of its beautiful fruit and soft textures. I cannot say how much air the wine requires at this stage, as tasting did not commence until it had been in decanter for four hours; that said, I would venture a guess that at least an hour of aeration would be helpful. Enjoy it throughout the remainder of this decade. Drink now-2030. (1002 views)
Tasted by Henman on 8/17/2023 & rated 90 points: From a 375ml bottle that was decanted for 1,5 hours. Vibrant nose of ripe blackberries. Full bodied, supple and fruity, delivering ample ripe dark fruit with blackberries in the fore, some spicy notes, gentle tannic grip and firm acidity. Overall very balanced and delicious. (747 views)
Tasted by Ozric on 8/4/2023 & rated 89 points: Nose: Cherry, strawberries, black pepper.

Palate: High acid on the entry, dry mid-palate. Notes of thyme. (892 views)
Tasted by lazy on 7/20/2023 & rated 90 points: Decanted two hours. Smelled cherry, garrigue, strawberry, and blackberry; the taste stuck to herbs and nice pure cherry mainly. Nicely acidic with slightly sandy tannin, could probably go a few more years in the cellar. Medium in body, good power, medium herbal finish. Is this the "replacement" CdP? (854 views)
Tasted by OrganicLlama on 6/13/2023 & rated 92 points: Appearance- medium- viscosity, deep ruby color
On the nose- orange, baking spice, apple (cinnamon?)
Palate- apples and Brazil nuts, toasted oak, strong dusty rust. Very strong cider flavors. Orange shows up at the very beginning
Finish- smoky finish, smooth and does not give off bitter flavor. Flavor is long lasting

I don't vibe with every single flavor in this wine but it is quite quality. Makes for a really good wine to have with fellow wine friends! Oh, also Famille Quiot can do no wrong. (932 views)
Tasted by Tige on 6/9/2023 & rated 88 points: Rouge-violet foncé.
Attendre 4-6 ans. (715 views)

Tasted by Barolo Raymond on 3/5/2023 & rated 90 points: Full-body CdP which benefits from additional cellaring. Black fruit, leather, licorice and dried leaves. Elegance and balance and rich mouthfeel. (1035 views)

Tasted by Matt21 on 10/9/2022 & rated 90 points: Decanted for about an hour prior to drinking. Canadian Thanksgiving meal. Paired very nicely. Definitely fresh and young, lots of ripe fruit. Will see how this evolves over the years with 2 more bottles in the cellar. (1535 views)
Tasted by Haakon.M on 8/14/2022 & rated 85 points: Gir den 85 fordi denne trenger lagringstid.

Domaine du Vieux Lazaret Châteauneuf-du-Pape

The origin of the name Vieux Lazaret dates back to the 18th century when there existed in the centre of the village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape a hospice or Lazaret. This offered comfort and shelter for the poor and infirm, provided by the Lazarists, who were a silent order of monks founded in 1625 by St Vincent de Paul to look after the sick and the needy in the French countryside. They took the name Lazarists from the Priory of St Lazare in Paris, where the original order had been formed in 1632.

The Lazarists in Châteauneuf-du-Pape played a major role in taking in and looking after the sick during the terrible epidemic of the plague, which killed a third of the population in 1720. Subsequently the buildings fell into disuse and were sold by the Commune during the 19th century to the Quiot family and used as agricultural buildings. Being situated in the village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and close to other properties owned by the Quiot family, these original buildings have today been extended and modernised, and now form the center of winemaking for Vignobles Famille Quiot. With this historical association going back over several centuries, the Quiot family decided in 1915 to give the name of Domaine du Vieux Lazaret to their principal Domaine.

Today, Domaine du Vieux Lazaret is exported to more than 43 countries around the world. It can be found on the best tables and regularly wins medals in wine competitions throughout the world. Florence and Jean Baptiste are the 13th generation to work at the estate.
Vineyards

The vineyards of Domaine du Vieux Lazaret are spread over 93 hectares (230 acres), split into 35 different parcels of vines throughout A.O.C. Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It is today amongst the largest domaines in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with 83 hectares (205 acres) planted in red grape varieties and 10 planted with white grapes. The number of parcels enables the Domaine to give greater complexity to its wines due to the diversity of soils, grape types and differing ages of vines.
Viticulture

The viticultural practices are strictly controlled and follow those traditions practised for many generations. The pruning is only done by those vineyard workers who are extremely experienced, and follow the strict rules of the appellation, with some vines trained on wires and others trained low to the ground. The soil in the vineyard is regularly worked to allow proper aeration, with regular application of compost, and other treatments to maintain the best organic level and condition of the soil. Harvesting of the grapes is done entirely by hand, with very strict selection of the best grapes to enhance the quality of the Domaine wine. The vines have an average age of 40 years.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
