Tasted by The Drunken Cyclist on 7/19/2023 & rated 92 points: Retail $22(?). Under screw cap. True Rosé (as far as I can tell). 100% Pinot Noir. The color of this wine is beautiful: ripe watermelon, probably about halfway between the Proveçal œil de Perdix and the richer, almost red, wines of Tavel. Lovely red berry fruit on the nose with a mineral aspect as well as some red rose and a hint of white pepper. The palate is fruity, for sure, but it is well-balanced with a zingy tartness and a healthy dose of verve. This is my first experience, essentially (I think I tasted a few at a Wine Bloggers Conference a while ago), with Bird in Hand, but so far? Definitely so good.

Tasted by isaacjamesbaker on 5/26/2023 & rated 90 points: Bright watermelon color. So bright and inviting on the nose with fresh red apples, pretty strawberries, and cantaloupe, with a bright, spicy, floral appeal of celery seed, mint, chalk dust, floral meadows. The palate is zesty and tangy but there’s a pretty, honeyed texture and mouthfeel. Watermelon, McIntosh apple, strawberry rhubarb pie, these flavors are delicious and accentuated by effusive chalk, flint, minerals, and notes of white flowers and white pepper. Love the depth, precision, and balance here. (208 views)

Bird in Hand

Bird in Hand began in earnest in 1997 when our founder, Andrew Nugent, and his father Michael Nugent, happened upon a run-down dairy farm in the emerging Adelaide Hills wine region of south Australia. The site of a gold mine in the late 1800s, its 80 fertile acres enjoyed the ideal growing conditions for stellar cool-climate wines. The seaside influence of the Gulf of St. Vincent, the cloud-trapping rise of the Mount Lofty Ranges and plenty of Australian sun all combined to create a special diurnal temperature shift that our grapes love.
An agricultural college graduate and vineyard apprentice who grew up next to Penfolds at Magill and spent his formative years in McLaren Vale, Andrew wanted winemaking to be his life’s work, and he had a strong feeling this was the place to do it. He was correct.
Today, we make four tiers of wines. Shiraz, of course, but also pinot noir, chardonnay, riesling, sauvignon blanc, and Italian varietals like nero d’avola, montepulciano, and arneis. Over the years, the land has yielded a collection of wines that cover every imaginable occasion, from everyday sipping to the absolute heights of life.
