Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.1 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 86 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Mossrose on 10/20/2019 & rated 91 points: 14 years old and time to consume, but still in great shape: Pleasant cherry fruit, slight hints of balsamic, tannins still grippy on the first day (that grittiness is diminished after being open for 5 days). Glad I opened the last bottle and looking forward to younger vintages in the cellar. (1261 views)
Tasted by Mossrose on 9/26/2018 & rated 93 points: Perbacco is Vietti's name for a blend across vineyards and even appellations, and basically consists the leftovers after the best barrels from each vineyard go into the single vineyard bottlings. You might expect those rejected barrels to be thinner, paler colored, muted, less concentrated, more bland, less ageworthy, and best consumed young. But this 2005 Perbacco at 13 years old pours into the glass almost opaque in color. The aromas are a complex and concentrated mix of red and black cherry, black walnut, and black tea. The sip is mouth filling and coating with lively acidity, ample drying tannin, and a smooth texture that is near caressing, with nothing lean, bitter, tight, or suppressive. Overall, while the top Viettis are even greater, this is a highly satisfying joy to drink that has improved to become the best the 2005 has ever tasted, at a fraction of the cost of its superiors.  Tasted by Mossrose on 2/20/2018 & rated 92 points: One of the best wines in a tasting of 20 wines from Northwest Italy, excluding the Barolo and Barbaresco appellations. Langhe is a larger aggregation of numerous appellations that does not identify where the wines come from and usually is bargain priced. This 13 year old Perbacco has aged beautifully, getting darker, softer, richer, integrated, seamless, and more fruit forward, but still has ample acid and tannin that keep the wine dry and well structured. Overall, a fine example of how Lange can be a fine source of affordable high quality Nebbiolos. (168 views)
Tasted by MarkLA on 8/18/2017: Best on the second day, when the fruit more clearly peeks through the tannin, and the finish is sweeter. It may have enough fruit to last another 5 years. (1922 views)
Tasted by WinePT on 10/23/2015 & rated 90 points: Opened up over a few hours. In a good spot right now. (3704 views)
Tasted by Lobonick on 10/2/2015 & rated 89 points: A beautiful wine. Nose has spice, cherry, smoke. Palate is bright with a medium body. This wine is very pretty and drinking very well. (3442 views)
Tasted by dthompson on 10/22/2014 & rated 89 points: My last bottle of 12. Drinking nicely. (4555 views)
Tasted by KeithAkers on 9/21/2014 & rated 90 points: Vietti Perbacco Vertical: 2005-2011 (My place, Chicago IL): Nose: The nose is wide open and perfumed with roses, red cherries, tar, fresh picked red berries, strawberries, and roasted herbs. There is excellent complexity with a good layering effect too.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium+ acidity and silky tannins. The structure is there, but it is well in balance and doesn't overpower. The feel is polished and lovely with roses, red cherries, tar, strawberries, and roasted herbs.

Overall: This feels like it's at a mature stage. It does show off Barolo-esque complexity, but it does lack the depth as expected. Still, this is gorgeous and shows off the benefit of aging. (5057 views)
Tasted by MarkLA on 6/17/2014 & rated 90 points: First time opening this wine in two years.

Dilute and unimpressive upon start, the wine has blossomed with air. Even 30 minutes in, I had the impression this was just going to be a sound luncheon wine, as it did seem to come around with the addition of some bread and pasta. But, even after, I am enjoying this wine's transformation. Totally resolved, much of the wine's power has shed, leaving a really nice complexity and elegance it didn't have in its youth. The nose is an enticing melange of black cherry, mahogany, asphalt, and leather. Deep wine. Supple on the mouth. Mouthwatering with just a bit of grip. I keep going back for more. Drink up happily! (4321 views)
Tasted by Lobonick on 3/21/2014 & rated 90 points: A beautiful wine. The nose is a bit light in intensity but with cherry fruit, talc, and baking spices. The wine has a medium color with orange edges. Body is medium(-) but acidity and tannins are both medium (+). Tannins are beautiful and well integrated with the cherry juice and white pepper flavors. Finish is long and sweet. Great wine. (3194 views)
Tasted by dthompson on 11/24/2013 & rated 87 points: Oops. Is this wine about to go over the hill? Better drink up. This was very, very slightly madeirized when first opened. Then it was ok after about 30 minutes. 4 left. Time to drink up. (3471 views)
Tasted by pinoteer on 9/8/2013 & rated 89 points: PnVnD. Only open for about 15 minutes at this point. Brickish red color. Classic Nebbiolo aromas of flowers, tar, and dried berries. Some ripe plum flavors on this one that I attribute to aging, along with dried cranberries. Still good acidity and tannins. While this will probably last for a few more years, the fruit will probably continue to ripen toward eventually stewed flavors. I plan to drink the rest of mine in the next 2 years. (3125 views)
Tasted by artoopeo on 8/1/2013 & rated 90 points: At $20 this is a really good value and was a perfect pairing with rabbit pappardelle. Wish I had bought more than one. Drinking well now and should continue for a few more years. Food wine. (3185 views)
Tasted by kanjimoti on 4/20/2013 & rated 88 points: Nice enough nose, very ripe, but then again this has been open for quite a while on a very warm day. Obviously nebbiolo but a bit over oaked with stewed fruit and a chalky undertone. At first the Perbacco's tannins were grainy but that aspect has mellowed leaving us with a nicely aged nebbiolo. A bit obvious and simple but enjoyable. The warm weather has really opened this up. Drink now and no later than the end of this summer. (3235 views)
Tasted by Poggio on 12/24/2012 & rated 79 points: Young and a bit unsophisticated (3414 views)
Tasted by Pantone877 on 11/23/2012 & rated 84 points: After cellaring for four years, this was not the experience i was hoping for. While the nose hinted at something better, the mouthfeel was flat and flavours, dull. (3155 views)
Tasted by kanjimoti on 10/15/2012 & rated 89 points: This particular bottle of Perbacco shows just a hint of rust to the eye as I swirl it in the glass. Open 15 minutes now and this is hauntingly good on the nose throwing off impressions of eucalyptus, smoky mesquite, clove, anise, pepper, and well preserved dark red fruits that are showing a whisper of oxidation. The tannin on the finish assists the acid and fruit in holding on for a long finish that, while a little grippy now, should soften and be an improvement by 2014. At this stage we have more of a nose wine calling loudly for olives and truffle cheese, but ultimately for more time in the cellar, closet, cave, somewhere. My only complaint is the acid not only stands out on the finish but is citrusy and unnatural tasting, making me think this was acidified in the winery (not allowed in Piemonte but laws are made to be broken). Better in 2014, best in 2016, drink by 2020. (3156 views)
Tasted by gcarl on 8/9/2012 & rated 90 points: Popular at blind tasting, fruit/flowers on the nose, which was very inviting. Smooth on the palate, with nice, bright red fruit. Solid wine, wish I had recorded the price I paid and where I bought it. Still have several more. (3195 views)
Tasted by nschmidt on 7/6/2012 & rated 92 points: Drank at Divina. Wonderful again. Getting better with age. In a great place right now. (3059 views)
Tasted by pinoteer on 3/11/2012 & rated 89 points: Very tasty Nebbiolo without the Barolo or Barbaresco price. (3141 views)
Tasted by Tgood on 12/12/2011 & rated 92 points: deep purple, fresh clean exciting complex nose of red raspberry, flowers and orange oil; kind and gentle but ample tannins on the palate. I was told "Perbacco" meant "OMG' in Italian; as in "OMG I can't believe this is nebbiolo". Certainly this is identifiable as nebbiolo but in a rich dense extracted properly ripened minus the aggressive tannins style; much of the charm of nebbiolo w/o the anguishing wait to let the tannins polymerize nor the overcooked/overripe softer tannins and less acidic "modern" early drinking style - OMG how'd they do that!? (3850 views)
Tasted by pdadams66 on 9/6/2011 & rated 89 points: Deep red center, red rim with some signs of age.
Sweet raspberries, strawberries, menthol and eucalyptus, more meaty notes with tar and balsamic finish.
Smooth entry, acidity with balsamic notes, ripe strawberries, and mature fruit on the finish, acidity and some tannin on the finish.
Mature nebbiolo, drinks well now, but has some stuffing left. (3818 views)
Tasted by spo on 2/18/2011 & rated 80 points: Woodsy, dusty, faint hint of menthol and no fruit. I liked where the tannin and acid were but very flat and austere in flavor. I checked it again today and nothing. (4364 views)
Tasted by mwanasheria on 11/26/2010 & rated 91 points: Spicy, tannic but weel integrated with nice fruit. (4941 views)
Tasted by BoireBio on 11/20/2010 & rated 87 points: 15/20 Grenat orangé. (4768 views)

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.
