Tasted by S.Hilmand on 2/25/2024 & rated 90 points: What a pleasant surprise. 4 bottle out of 6, and the first i have truly enjoyed. Fully integrated tanins, no alcoholic Burn. Just Nicely evolved cdp. Drink up though. (73 views)
 Tasted by grafstrb on 4/23/2018 & rated 87 points: -- Coravin-ed --
-- tasted non-blind over a couple hours --

NOSE: expressive; red-fruited; leathery; garrigué/CdP goodness!; cherry/raspberry cordial; grape soda after a couple hours.

BODY: lots of fine particulate matter present; impenetrable blood red color of great depth; medium-full bodied.

TASTE: bitter; medicinal red fruits; alcohol stands-out a lot; the alcohol presence makes this tough to like; a difficult conundrum here: this is ageing nicely as far as the aromatics go, but seems to be progressing poorly with respect to flavor; this did improve over the course of a couple hours (in the glass, and, I suppose, my palate getting used to the wine), but it nonetheless remained quite alcoholic. Hopefully this is in an awkward stage right now.

50, 5, 13, 13, 6 = 87

update: pulled the cork last night (5/30/18). Immediate drain pour. Oxidized. And the wine underneath the oxidation still wasn't good, either. Maybe 5 weeks was too long to let this sit after the Coravin? Maybe I didn't use enough gas when using the Coravin? (2661 views)
Tasted by bjschmitt on 2/18/2018 & rated 88 points: Served with pan fried rib eye, squash, and popovers.
Decanted 30 minutes prior to service.
Deep, dark crimson/garnet, purple at the rim.
Earthy, dusty nose, very dark fruit.
Tannins remain, but not dominant, dry, moderate acid, mushrooms with the earthiness, and as noted elsewhere a touch of coffee.
Needs more depth of flavor, and length of finish, to crack into 90 territory. (2284 views)
Tasted by David J Cooper on 1/1/2018 & rated 92 points: Fairly dark red. Intense aged Rhone nose, dark fruit, roasted meat, pepper, earthy cherry, and thyme. Delicious dry peppery black cherry flavours and a perfect in balance finish.

Just what I love in a Southern Rhone wine but lately have not always found. (2386 views)
Tasted by NarunP on 11/14/2017 & rated 91 points: 70% Grenache 30% Mourvèdre

Espresso coffee, sweet cherry, raspberry, wild strawberry, big tannin still, with detectable acid structure (surprisingly especially for CdP). Superb wine. Will hold for 5 more years but I wouldn't wait beyond that. 91. (2423 views)
Tasted by swade on 5/10/2017 & rated 85 points: Some wine running up the cork, but no leakage. Iodine and roast beef aromas. Nice first impression with tart, under ripe blackberries, but then it turned astringent, dry and it just fell off the table. No back end. Lots of heat/alcohol poking through. Came across thin. I drank this with a casserole meal that screamed for a CdP, but it didn't help. This was hard to drink. Bought on release and stored in my cellar. Clean and no funk. I spent some time debating whether this was flawed. I wanted to love this from my cellar. First of these and hoping for better with the next. 85 (2703 views)
Tasted by chitowncdpguy on 12/24/2016: Very nice. A lot of black olive - I might have guessed this was a syrah. Also some smoke on the nose. It's all about the earth and minerals on the palate, with a little more of the black olive, some dark fruit, and a bit of iodine. Well balanced with a finish that lingers. (1600 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 9/14/2016 & rated 91 points: Olives and tobacco add complexity to the dark red fruits and minerality. If you have a bottle, you can easily pull a cork to experience the lusty textures, full bodied, fresh fruits and sweet, peppery black cherries. Else you can age it a bit longer. This is the first vintage that was fully destemmed at the domaine. The wine was made from a blend of 75% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre. (2508 views)
Tasted by chitowncdpguy on 4/8/2016: Pretty nice. Dark fruit is pretty reticent, some wild spice, and a lot of barnyard. In a previous note someone wrote creamy and that is indeed a good word to describe the texture of this bottle. Finish seemed a little short. (1913 views)
Tasted by Vino Me on 4/4/2016 & rated 90 points: Bought this in 2009 for $16 on clearance. The blend on this wine is 75% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre. The vineyards are relatively close to Beaucastel. 2006 is the first vintage the winemaker destemmed. Reportedly a tannic wine which either needs serious time in the decanter or a few years aging. Not decanted. Deep red color. Creamy texture. Notes of eucalyptus, currant and cedar. The roundest of the 3 CdP's opened. Similar quality to the 2001 vintage that I had of this a few years ago. 90 points. (4570 views)
Tasted by David J Cooper on 9/26/2015 & rated 87 points: medium red with clear edges. This wine was quite resolved. Decent but not very interesting. (1869 views)
Tasted by twfwinedude on 3/6/2015: Unfortunately, seepage by the cork. Wine was bad. Bought it several years ago, so a loss. (1983 views)
Tasted by grafstrb on 12/12/2014: -- popped and poured --
-- tasted a couple glasses non-blind over approx. one hour --

Very tight, and in need of a healthy decant right now. Very "dark" profile --- both aromatically and on the palate. Continue to Hold until 2016. (2140 views)
Tasted by rogerr on 6/22/2014 & rated 92 points: agree with other recent notes. (2147 views)
Tasted by Dave Dalluge on 11/30/2013 & rated 91 points: Pretty red fruit. Nice weight and a clean red fruit flavors on the palate. Paired very well with our Thanksgiving meal. (2576 views)
Tasted by chitowncdpguy on 9/28/2013: Pretty but a little bit burly. Fruit profile is very dark, some wild spice and earthy minerality. Long finish. Also detected some black pepper but that may have been from the steak au poivre. (2321 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 7/14/2013 & rated 91 points: Sunday Brown Bag Tasting: 2003 Bordeaux (Mike & Judi's): Black fruit and spice notes, followed by clay and garrigue. The palate follows the bouquet; long, lingering finish. Much darker profile than the '09 Lazaret. (3124 views)
Tasted by Longnose Gar on 3/31/2013 & rated 85 points: This was stored for at least two years at room temp. Color very dark for CDP. Nose was musty. Mostly alcohol on the initial taste and a bitter finish. After a couple hours the wine softened and bitterness subsided. But no real fruit going on. Mostly a smooth texture experience. Disappointing but could have been a damaged bottle. (1253 views)
Tasted by rogerr on 6/6/2012 & rated 93 points: No brett on my bottle. Beautifully integrated and balanced. (3079 views)
Tasted by zscheiner on 2/29/2012 & rated 87 points: 2006 Chateauneuf du Papes (Vin Vino Wine, Palo Alto, CA): Really bretty nose with some raspberry liqueur trying to work its way out from under the funk, unsuccessfully. Medium to full bodied with medium acidity. Juicy blackberry and plum fruit with some savory, herbal notes and moderate tannins. Slightly bitter finish, which bothers me, along with the brett. (3049 views)
Tasted by zscheiner on 3/15/2011 & rated 90 points: 2006 Chateauneuf du Papes (and a white CdP starter) (Vin Vino Wine, Palo Alto, CA): Smoked meat on the nose. Medium to full bodied, black fruit and smoked meats. Bit of chocolate and a hint of oak. Complex and tasty. (3731 views)
Tasted by Friedo on 9/29/2010 & rated 90 points: Purple/black. Licorice and dark fruits, cherry. Needs time (both in decanter and cellar). (3467 views)
Tasted by Meembo on 8/1/2010 & rated 86 points: Unlike some other CdPs I've had in the past, this was a deep, dark, big wine. I had decanted it for 9 hours, and it still was reluctant to give up its fruit. After some time in the glass, it gave up notes of anise/licorice that were nice. Cellar...for a few years at least. (3365 views)
Tasted by eporres on 3/21/2010 & rated 90 points: Almost undrinkably bitter on day 1. dark, spicy, cherry, for best results, decant 24hrs. (3211 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 6/5/2009: Flight of 2006 Chateauneufs for the Common Man (Vin Vino, Palo Alto): Purple and unusually thick looking. Figs, VA, and cherry liqueur. Promising entry but hollow mid-palate with hot, pruny finish. Poor and the only wine to show these overripe characteristics. (4055 views)

(Mas de BOISLAUZON) List Dear Friends, A few interesting wines have appeared before the weekend takes hold - we have an especially good price on the Bollinger and the Boislauzon wines are among the best of the entire 2006 vintage. Enjoy the weekend - - Jon Rimmerman *************************** Friday Focus Wine: ONE SHIPMENT ONLY at this price - about the same as in Europe directly from the source with perfect provenance: 2003 Bollinger "by Bollinger" (RP95) STRICT LIMIT 12/person This wine has received a great deal of chatter recently after Parker's 95pt assessment on his Asian foray (documented on his web site). I believe this was one of the highest rated bottles of Champagne on his entire trip (and he tasted top bottles left and right, every night). Called a "white burgundy with bubbles" this Champagne is idiosyncratic, eccentric and one of a kind - that's why they named it as such ("by Bollinger" instead of just another Grande Annee). Controversial? Maybe but there is a huge contingent out there that could drink this every night. Batard mixed with a ripe Clos du Mesnil? If you close your eyes, it's possible. This is not the Grande Annee - "by Bollinger" is the winery's top cuvee in 2003. **************************** 2003 La Ca Nova Barbaresco "Bric Mentina" (this is not Valfieri) This wine will surprise a lot of you - very intense and packed with flavor but ready to drink now and over the next several years. Cru-level Barbaresco at a good price while you wait for your 2001's and 2004's... 2006 Mas de Boislauzon Chateauneuf du Pape LIMIT 12/person 2006 Mas de Boislauzon Chateauneuf du Pape "Tintot" EXTREMELY LIMITED This is the crown jewel in 2006, a 100% Mouvedre cuvee that has been like pulling teeth for me to obtain even a few bottles. Only a few dozen cases for the entire US... 2006 Mas de Boislauzon Chateauneuf du Pape "Cuvee de Quet" Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Champ7600 Italy7709 Rhone6610 Rhone6620 Rhine6630

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
