Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 88.8 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 11 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by AudunG on 11/10/2019 & rated 91 points: Dark yellow. Aromas of honey, citrus and minerals. Powerful and acidic. Creamy and fat, but also quite elegant for a Savennieres. Has not developed much the last four years, so I guess this will keep for another 5-10 years. (1113 views)
Tasted by AudunG on 2/5/2016 & rated 91 points: Golden yellow and rather developed compared to one tasted 6 months ago. Aromas of citrus, honey and minerals. Very powerful and concentrated, with a smooth mouth feeling and plenty of acidity. (2474 views)
Tasted by AudunG on 8/13/2015 & rated 91 points: Aromas of citrus, honey and minerals. Very powerful and concentrated, with a creamy and fat mouth feeling. Plenty of acidity, not the crispy one, but rather the steely type. The wine has developed nicely and become quite different from what it was. (2588 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 4/3/2011 & rated 91 points: Loire-Themed Euro Lunch: Huët, Chidaine, Clos Rougeard (Donato Enoteca, Redwood City, California): Light golden yellow color; light, fresh lemon, focused, mineral, delicate nose; tasty, medium bodied, tart citrus, mineral palate; medium-plus finish (2585 views)
Tasted by UTPK on 5/12/2010: In a very very good spot right now. This was by far the fattest and most opulent Savennieres I ever tasted. Great elegant nose, where several people in the blilnd tasting believe it was Meursault (!) The steely acidity gave it away though, typical Chenin Blanc. I wish I had more of this, as this is better than 1996 and 2002 which receives higher ratings by the "experts". (5013 views)
Tasted by jmht on 6/4/2009 & rated 91 points: Even better than last bottle-- impressive lemon, beeswax on nose; lemon drop, wet stone, minerals, honeysuckle, minerals again, and great acidity. Much creamier mouthfeel than any prior bottle. It walks an impressive tightrope of fat vs lean, hint of lemony sweetness vs acidity, fruit vs minerals and savory. (4954 views)
Tasted by jmht on 8/11/2008 & rated 90 points: My third of 3 bottles. First was undrinkable, the second two were pure Baumard Papillon-- lemony, dried honey, balanced, crisp acidity, long finish. (4260 views)
Tasted by jmht on 6/15/2008 & rated 89 points: Much better than prior bottle. Nose of quinine, minerals, lemon chiffon. Palate of lemon, dried honey, minerals, acidity. Completelly balanced, unlike prior bottle. Also, served initially at cellar temperature (57F) which was better than after I placed it in the fridge and came back to it cold. (2991 views)
Tasted by jmht on 5/25/2008 & rated 81 points: Disjointed. Nose of minerals beyond belief. Palate shows minerals, very little fruit, and 13% alcohol seems hot. Minerals and heat seem to be off-putting together. A disappointment. (2772 views)
Tasted by cousteau on 7/5/2005 & rated 84 points: Unfortunately this is way past it´s peak, at least for my taste. No acidity, flat and fat. (2909 views)
Tasted by peternelson on 8/6/2003 & rated 89 points: CIA: clear, brite, med straw/green, white rim, low visc.; grpfrt, tart apple, gooseberry, riverbed min., delicate nose, citrus, no wd; touch of sugar, med bod, lite pch, green apple, lite wd?, med+a’s, med. alc., med compl, mid palate-sweet frnt, min/earth mid palate, turbo fin of lite bitterness. Savennières

Savennières is a small, relatively well-known Loire Valley region producing wines made from the chenin blanc grape.

They are not conventionally fruity, and benefit from extensive aging.

Savennieres often have smells like white truffles and animal notes, even when young. They can last for a tremendous amount of time, and some people mistake the evolved aromas after 10-20 years with oxidization, but I have yet to taste an oxidised chenin blanc, since the amount and type of acidity (many g/l and tartaric) preserve the fruit in a much more effective way than e.g. chardonnay.
