Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 93.3 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 118 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Art SD 72 on 2/13/2024 & rated 93 points: Still when it's peak, still very tight but opens up dark fruit berries with lots of earth flavors. Enjoyed it a lot. (517 views)
Tasted by Chrisinroch on 1/28/2024: No formal notes, but these are so reliably delicious for my palate. It tastes like cool climate Syrah but I had forgotten that they use grapes from CA. Whatever they do, it's fantastic. (483 views)
Tasted by Fugu Me on 11/7/2023: PnP, consumed over three hours. This is drinking like it’s at its peak. Lovely on initial pour, it held steady throughout the evening. As it warmed up to room temp, the alcohol showed a little hot, but otherwise this was an elegant, balanced bottle. Tannins are fully integrated, and this was just smooth as silk. A fair amount of fine sediment, so recommend standing the bottle up for a while prior to opening. (630 views)
Tasted by jlgnml on 10/15/2023 & rated 90 points: Lighter style on the palate, not as extracted as expected. Drink. (608 views)
Tasted by alitman on 10/14/2023 & rated 91 points: Last bottle of three. The wine is drinking very well. Deep purple in color with a mouth of dark fruit, game/meat, and pepper. The tannins are smooth and integrated. Medium plus body with a long finish. The tasting group really enjoyed this bottle. (530 views)
Tasted by prasm on 10/11/2023 & rated 91 points: PnP, consumed over 2 hours. Cork broke, required use of Durand to extract bottom 1/3rd. Appearance: Ruby core transitioning to garnet outwards, slightly cloudy on the edge. Nose: Clean, medium+ intensity with developed aromas of dried fruit - blackberry and cassis, along with kirsch, black olive, venison, and violet. Palate: Dry, tannins are medium and very soft, medium acid, full body, medium+ intensity, 15.3% abv with flavors of kirsch, dried blackberry, and black olive with a subtle, but long, finish.

Balance: Very good - lots of stuffing here, but not enough to cover 15.3% abv
Length: Outstanding - subtle but so persistent
Intensity: Excellent
Complexity: Excellent

Overall, this wine is fully developed, but still very much alive. Showing a wonderful blend of primary, secondary, and tertiary notes. My only complaint is the noticeable alcohol, but many others will likely not be bothered by it and find this spectacular. I don't see this getting better from here, but there are still several more years of enjoyment left. (511 views)
Tasted by jshufelt on 5/2/2023 & rated 93 points: Consistent with previous tasting note - a very nice syrah that seems to be holding up well at its drinking plateau. You could wait for those fine tannins to eventually resolve, but I don't think you'd want to miss out on that fruit, especially if you have multiple bottles to burn. (745 views)
Tasted by Salute on 10/9/2022: Excellent.
Decanted - really opened up after an hour or so.
Great on day two as well. Very good wine. (778 views)
Tasted by PDX-S on 4/24/2022: PnP - definitely hitting its stride and likely to remain this primary and integrated for years yet. Just starting to show hints of tertiary development.
My preference is a degree or two cold and before it has a chance to aerate too much. (1037 views)
Tasted by Fugu Me on 1/23/2022: Bottle opened but not decanted approximately one hour before serving. Plenty of fruit left in this, but tertiary development is underway giving this elegance and complexity. Tannins are mostly resolved. A decent amount of sediment, so take care when pouring. Paired brilliantly with Flannery NY strips. (1243 views)
Tasted by jshufelt on 8/7/2021 & rated 93 points: Pop and pour; significant amounts of fine sediment in the bottle. In the glass, dark maroon/magenta at the rim, shading to very dark inky magenta at the core. On the nose, stone fruit, leather, and a bit of graphite. On the palate, currants, plums, a peachy viognier-like note, citrus, and beef blood, with fine tannins supporting the wine through a long finish. I think there are likely a few more years left at this drinking plateau. (1314 views)
Tasted by TMOVino2 on 6/30/2021 & rated 95 points: deep Ruby color still at 11 years old. The nose is still producing lush dark fruit, tobacco, leather, all spice, cloves. The palate carries red and black fruit, tobacco, and clove again. Tannins are still a bit grippy and firm and acidity is nearly spot on. Drink now with a healthy decant 3-4 hrs+ or continue to age this beast! (1625 views)
Tasted by jc510 on 6/9/2021 & rated 93 points: Opened up right away, thick glass staining, mild fragrance.
Full bodied, fruit has integrated well, still a little Oak backbone. Medium long finish. (1082 views)
Tasted by cos65 on 2/24/2021 & rated 94 points: Deep ruby, (slightly murky)purple
Rich cherry cola flavors with spice
Immediately on opening this bottle was a bit disjointed, but with 30 minutes of air this came together beautifully. Big and a bit sweet, but not over the top. 15.3% well covered. Showing much better than recent bottles of the ‘07 and ‘08

Tasted by JRockEsq on 9/5/2020 & rated 94 points: Method: decanted for 2 hours, rebottled, and tasted 2 hours later; 64 degrees; Cab glass

Look: medium+ ruby; medium+ amount of medium and slow legs

Nose: blackberry, cured meat, green olive, potting soil, clove, eucalyptus

Palate: green olive, dried herbs, blackberry, tar, eucalyptus; long- finish of green olive, leather, cedar, tar, mineral; dry; full body; medium- grippy tannin; medium+ acidity

Overall thoughts: Excellent Syrah! Excellent, fully body with deep and complex flavors. Love this! (1498 views)
Tasted by tomlee on 8/25/2020 & rated 93 points: Maroon in color. 15.3% ABV. Gorgeous nose of blue and black fruits, coffee, game and flowers. Full bodied with mouth watering acidity. Rich and savory with impeccable balance. Black cherry, blood, olives and charred meats on the palate. Tremendous length on the finish. Stunning Syrah that has aged exceptionally well. Best over the next 1-2 years. (1422 views)
Tasted by tcarter on 8/1/2020 & rated 94 points: Same note as last time. From magnum. And from Coravin. (1303 views)
Tasted by tcarter on 6/10/2020 & rated 94 points: Excellent juice. Deep, rich black and blue fruits. A little tobacco, little leather, little chocolate. Killer stuff. Several good years ahead. Drank from magnum. And drank from Coravin. (1346 views)
Tasted by RPerro on 5/13/2020 & rated 94 points: Outstanding 10 year-old Syrah! Popped and let slow ox for a couple hours. Massive black and blue fruit, notes of sage and pipe tobacco, finish of dark chocolate. Very ripe and extracted, just how I like my Cali Syrah. I always forget how much I love Maggie's Syrah...I need to get more Lillian! Drink now - 2025. (1348 views)
Tasted by hanasowner on 4/8/2020 flawed bottle: Cork broke at the very bottom...had to push through and strain into decanter...was drinkable on the first night...drank another glass on the second night and poured the rest out...still very dark in color...very little fruit. (1250 views)
Tasted by ews3 on 11/27/2019 flawed bottle: Corked (1674 views)
Tasted by BigTex22 on 9/22/2019 flawed bottle: Last bottle was corked. Damn shame as I was looking forward to trying this with a bit of age on it. (1671 views)
Tasted by Elkcims on 9/1/2019 & rated 95 points: Wonderfully ripe, fine-grained tannins and fantastic freshness. My last - Sad. (1661 views)
Tasted by rwstorer on 7/14/2019 & rated 95 points: Popped and decanted for about 60 minutes. Holding up beautifully with at least five years ahead of it. Drinking beautifully now, with a surprising pepper finish. Lovely black cherry and elegance. Love this wine. (1662 views)
Tasted by geoffreychambertin on 7/3/2019 & rated 94 points: Needs an hour of air, then it sings beautifully (1612 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
