Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 87.7 pts. and median of 87 pts. in 12 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by appleforest on 8/30/2009: Definitely still ok. Perhaps starting to dry out, but excellent. I am not well calibrated on the style, but wouldn't argue with the 88 average this is getting. (2692 views)
Tasted by indiscriminate palate on 12/27/2007 & rated 87 points: An excellent dessert wine for the money! Apricots, peaches, tropical fruits, light spice, and reasonable (though not very pronounced) acidity. Finish not too long. Many flavors, though little change in mouth or with time. (2683 views)
Tasted by blazer on 12/25/2006 & rated 87 points: This wine needs to be very chilled. Floral aroma and sweet. (3045 views)
Tasted by ewill on 10/25/2005: Alcohol: 11.5% Residual Sugar: 19.5%

"Made from Post-Harvest Frozen Muscat Grapes"

Color: Light yellow
Nose: Asian fruits, like lychee
Mouthfeel: Like many desert wines, it is thicker than most non-desert wines and coats the tongue. The texture is pleasant and not cloying.
Taste: Sweet with Asian fruits. Very nice. (3386 views)
Tasted by rourkem on 9/10/2005 & rated 89 points: Bonny Doon Tasting Room (Santa Cruz, CA): This is an "icebox" ice wine made from muscat grapes. Smells almost like Green Tea Tropical. Has quite a lot going in the nose and on the palate. Simple, still. The taste doesn't change in your mouth at all. Not much acid, but the sweetness isn't too overwhelming, and this is a very pleasant inexpensive dessert wine. Very, very smooth. (4312 views)
Tasted by basis on 3/21/2005 & rated 88 points: Very pale, medium viscosity. Simple, but tasty. (2135 views)

Bonny Doon Vineyard

Producer website

Bonny Doon was sold in early 2020 to "WarRoom", a wine production and marketing entity formed in 2018. Per a January 2020 Decanter article - https://www.decanter.com/wine-news/californias-bonny-doon-sold-430550/ - "Graham will retain creative control of Bonny Doon’s wines, but production will change from 35,000 cases of 15 different wines annually to just four wines: the flagship red Rhône blend Le Cigare Volant; Le Cigare Blanc (based on Vermentino); Vin Gris de Cigare (a Rhône varietal rosé); and a 100% Picpoul."

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
