Community Tasting Notes (average 92.4 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 107 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by jviz on 5/12/2023 & rated 95 points: Same bottle as Nutty08. This was delightful. A little volatility right when opened but the nose was aromatic and on display over several hours in the decanter. This showed a little lighter in body next to the 90 Montrose. It was also more charming and red fruited, with light coffee and tertiary notes. Acidity was high. Fully resolved in terms of tannic structure. Clearly a wine at its apex. (1446 views)
Tasted by Nutty08 on 5/12/2023 & rated 95 points: Delightful mature bdx. Shows a hint of barnyard upon opening. Otherwise mature tertiary cedar fruit with hint of eucalyptus. Quite vibrant and full in the mouth--but lacking the density and complexity of the '90 Montrose. Lengthy finish with a little leather and tobacco notes, along with smoke and cedar. Have to think this at peak as the tannins are nearly resolved. Not going off a cliff anytime soon though. (1248 views)
Tasted by Rani on 5/6/2023 & rated 95 points: Tasted blind next to the 1990 Cos. Superb, peaking now. Unmistakable nose of cigar box and herbs, with a note of blackcurrant. Structured but velvety with really nice acidity. WOTN. (1073 views)
Tasted by Rani on 1/23/2023 & rated 95 points: Wow this was as good as it gets. The most rounded and fat Calon Segur I remember. Black fruit, cedar, fine tannins. Everything you’d expect in a left bank wine from a great vintage. Drank next to its 1989 sibling, which was also excellent but a tad less rewarding. (1449 views)
Tasted by A Great Wine Life on 4/20/2022 & rated 97 points: Soft and silky. Plenty of ripe red fruit and compote in this wine. A wine for royalty. Feels like it’s at the glorious peak before retreating. Drink now. (2317 views)
Tasted by JulianSkeels on 3/29/2022 & rated 95 points: Some odd notes here. I have a few pristine cases - all in perfect condition. Fully mature and no need to wait but also not in decline. Not as dense as Montrose and others in 90, but this has much more elegance. Lovely red berry mouthfeel with dried flower, tobacco and graphite on the nose. Lots of tertiary notes and it looks aged. So feminine. Always a treat to open (pop and pour, no need to decant) and very highly recommended - frankly at the current market price, good bottles are a bargain. Note that non-pristine bottles have a slight initial funk that blows off quickly (1710 views)
Tasted by short and confused on 7/1/2021: Lovely St. Estephe. Soft and well evolved. Had next to the 1995. I actually prefered the 95 which had abit more energy. (2668 views)
Tasted by Mihkel on 1/30/2021: amber and cedar - light but good

20 minutes in good to go but then drink fast as it flattens out withing the hour (2881 views)
Tasted by eadsaaron on 11/24/2020 & rated 95 points: Earthy, tobacco, long finish. Drinking well still. (3065 views)
Tasted by Papies on 11/13/2020 & rated 91 points: A bit fragile and we would suggest avoiding long decant. Soft and well evolved, it has the austerity more akin to a Paullac . Nice leather and herb edge mineral and very pretty . Lacks a bit of depth of flavour and energy but a very pretty wine nonetheless. 91 (2574 views)
Tasted by dnnk88 on 11/12/2020 & rated 92 points: Wine Night #2 Commanderie @ GWC!: Black fruits, spices, old Bordeaux funk. Open sooner than later. 92/93 (2318 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 11/12/2020 & rated 97 points: During a blind tasting dinner. Fantastic nose here with cherry, funky farmyard, forest floor. Fully tertiary in character and typical from aged Bordeaux of high quality. Elegant, long finish. This was very popular at the table and shows that Calon Segur has terrific terroir if they pull it together. Looks like they did in the warm 1990 vintage which suits St.Estephe. (2908 views)
Tasted by sirpat00 on 8/24/2020 & rated 95 points: Bordeaux 1990 horizontal tasting (Fribourg): 1990 Bordeaux horizontal hosted by a private collector. 30 years down the road, the vintage comes across as bold and muscular, youthful and in general not yet open for business or at times closed. Highlights included Figeac, Haut-Brion, Mouton, Calon Ségur – and to my surprise – Marquis de Terme. See tasting story for more take-aways and the complete line-up.

Tasting note
Detailed and delicate nose of dried herbs, a bit of tobacco, espresso, ripe almost jammy fruit. The refined texture imposes lots of character and personality carrying great depth and concentration. By far not ready yet, but one of the strongest presentation in the line-up and beating younger top vintages such as 2009, 2010 and 2016 (not the stellar 2018, however). (2801 views)
Tasted by vinhslee on 6/7/2020 & rated 95 points: When PnP, it has intense flavours of cassis, dried roses, earthiness, barnyard, plum, black fruits. With plenty of air, it reveals more of tertiary flavours, dried roses, mint and green pepper. The tannins are quite assertive and not quite resolved. Very persistent and slightly sweet finish. It needs at least 3 hours of aeration in a large decanter (or a Zalto Burgundy glass). In in early part of its prime drinking window now, but has years to go. (1909 views)
Tasted by vinhonotte on 5/31/2020 & rated 94 points: Fine Wines SG - Grand Cru Discovery Pack (Delivered to Home): Medium ruby core, with orange and fading edges. Pronounced aromas of violets, paprika, grass, and cloves. Tannins softened, and intense flavours, of pepper, grass, red cherry, redcurrant, paprika, grass, cloves, tar, coffee. Lots of sweet berry juice of the finish, that lasted very long. Great! (1847 views)
Tasted by kevinleeht on 5/30/2020 & rated 92 points: Garnet with amber/brownish tinges. Fully developed with pronounced intensity of dried roses, rust, copper, tobacco, dried leaves, forest and banyard. On the palate it is soft silky and body is medium. Flavour intensity is med (+) and palate has cherriess, tomato leaf, tobacco, herbs. Wine is fully matured and drink now. (1855 views)
Tasted by rmcnees on 10/25/2019 & rated 91 points: Dark garnet colored, medium full bodied, nicely balanced, elegant and refined, Jancis Robinson speaks of its "very attractive voluptuousness.. .and beautifully balanced". Aromas and bright taste profile of floral and violets, the layer of black fruits accented by the floral and tones of mushroom, spice, licorice, earth and leather and soft, velvety tannins.

Tasted by Burgnick on 8/31/2019 & rated 92 points: Consistent with previous note. Drinking really well with smoothe mouthfeel but just lacking that ooze and complexity (2772 views)
Tasted by dnnk88 on 8/17/2019 & rated 92 points: 2nd try: Old textbook funk on the nose. Black fruits, mint leaves, peppers, mushrooms tertiaries. Slight blood iron on the finish. It’s almost 30 years old but drinks younger. This is still in its drinking window but open earlier than later. Good stuff. (2413 views)
Tasted by schneesurfer on 5/30/2019 & rated 94 points: Pnp on Father’s day. Nose of leather, wet forest floor and nice red fruits. This wine was cloudy (unfiltered?). On the palate there is such a punch, I would have never estimated it 29 years old. This full bodied wine is so beautiful with its smooth tannins, alive acidity and multi layered components of red fruits, liquorice, cedar and dried plums. The finish is about 30-50 seconds long. Great wine to look out for. (2764 views)
Tasted by dnnk88 on 5/8/2019 & rated 91 points: Cassis, wet forest floor, mushroom bouquet. Tasted blackcurrants, spices, tinge of bitter grape skin, gravel, herbs, with earthy tertiaries. There are still slight tannins which helped to bring out the flavours and minerality. Mint leaf and white pepper finish but not long. Enjoyed it. Open now. (2724 views)
Tasted by raiachat on 12/25/2018 & rated 94 points: We drank a comparison vertical of the 1989 and 1990 Calon Segur. The '90 was clearly the better of the two wines. The 1989 was beautiful in color - no loss of clarity or the beautiful dark red of a claret. The nose was outstanding. first taste after uncorking the 1989 was of the terroir.
I decanted toe 1989 and 1990 for about 2 hrs and it did not lose any body or flavor.
The 1990 was deeper in color than the 1989 and had more tannin left and body. A beautiful bottle - we drank it after the 1989. Clearly the better of the two. (2472 views)
Tasted by wlayne on 10/15/2018 & rated 93 points: This was utterly delicious. Pencil shavings, graphite, slightly fading fruit but still punching reasonably hard for a 28 year old. (2431 views)
Tasted by rjm on 9/30/2018 & rated 70 points: Flat thin and well past it’s prime. A few hours open did not help. (2571 views)
Tasted by Schwarzer Hund on 5/28/2018: No decant this time but bottle opened 1 hour before serving. Black currents, blackberry, leather, tobacco aromas and fruit. Nicely aged value bordeaux. Bought en premier. (3201 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

St. Estèphe

Read more about St. Estephe and its wines Whereas the first activity recorded in Saint-Estèphe goes back as far as the Middle Bronze Age, the first vines date from the Roman Occupation. But it was the Bordeaux merchants who by aging and selling Saint-Estèphe wines themselves were largely responsible for this appellation's fame. And in the nineteenth century, noted for its prosperity, the great estates of today were created. The movement continues today with the merging of small estates.

A land of great wines, Saint-Estèphe is situated almost in the centre of the Médoc, close to the Gironde Estuary. The appellation is equidistant from Bordeaux and the Pointe de Grave.
The beds of soil are characterized by their remarkable diversity, the result of their undulating relief and excellent drainage. Quartz and well-rounded pebbles mingled with light, sandy surface soil are found everywhere, giving the wines a distinctive finesse. And the subsoil is made up of the famous Saint-Estèphe limestone, which outcrops on the west of the commune.

Tasting
Thanks to ideal conditions of climate and geology, Saint-Estèphe wines are characterized by their sturdy qualities and robust constitution. Accordingly, they can be laid down for a very long time while yet preserving their youth and freshness. Distinguished by a subsoil which is more clayey than that in the other communal appellations which lie by the river, the wine here attains a distinctive individuality : a very rich tannic structure, a fine deep red colour and an exceptional backbone with aromas of great finesse.

Production conditions (Decree dated September 11, 1936):

In order to have the right to the Saint-Estèphe appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the communes of Saint-Estèphe, "excluding any parcels in that area which are situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
