Community Tasting Notes (average 91.9 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 25 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by pagejshawjr on 9/18/2016 & rated 90 points: Signs of fruit decay. Color starting to brown. Tannins softer but still firm. Acidity still high. Drinking beautifully. (2334 views)
Tasted by skurtz on 6/10/2016 & rated 92 points: Very nice bottle. PNP on a Fri afternoon with grilled brats. Hefty notes of mineral, chocolate, tannin, oak, and red cherries. Otherwise consistent with my note from Dec '15. Wish I had more. (2460 views)
Tasted by skurtz on 12/17/2015 & rated 92 points: The cork fractured upon removal, which was a pain because of the cork fragments that the restaurant establishment was not entirely prepared to deal with. Once you got past a few cork fragments, the wine was a nice treat. Smooth, polished red fruit, but with still with enough tannins to make me wonder if this could age for at least 5 more years. Tastes at least as good as wine twice the price, and while not cheap, it is an excellent value. With burgers and onion rings in Palo Alto. (2645 views)
Tasted by WaitinginManassas on 8/8/2012 & rated 92 points: Drinking very well. Berry, eucalyptus, cocoa, a bit of leather, tannins well integrated, brought to go with steaks for dinner but bottle never made it that far. Sorry that was my only bottle, it was delicious! (5506 views)
Tasted by suarezd on 7/8/2012 & rated 91 points: 92 on opening. Later in the night a 90. (5153 views)
Tasted by mhenry on 5/30/2012 & rated 92 points: Very nice wine. Soft and nicely balanced. Sorry this was my last bottle. (3453 views)
Tasted by wineguy58 on 2/7/2012 & rated 91 points: still has some tannins left. light herbal mint/peppers on the palate with the classic red currants, berries and touch of cocoa. drink now to 2015. (3634 views)
Tasted by mhenry on 2/5/2012 & rated 92 points: This was really good. Drank with beef stew and and Superbowl. Very nice nose. Aged nicely, and probably should be drunk soon. Popped and poured. Was adviced to drink it in one setting as the wine probably would not hold up for a second day. (3500 views)
Tasted by RdShadow92 on 10/31/2011 & rated 92 points: Great bottle, opened up nicely in an hour. Tannins soft, delightful finish. Excellent example of this winery's best effort. (2146 views)
Tasted by BinVA on 10/16/2011 & rated 95 points: Drink em up, in a perfect window right now. WOTN against four other bottles. Definitely wish I had more than just the one remaining bottle. (2243 views)
Tasted by davidwilliamson on 7/30/2011 & rated 92 points: A delightfully fruity and full bodied wine, full of berries with nicely balanced oakiness. The chocolate finish developed through the evening. Excellent with lamb and a berry pie. (2370 views)
Tasted by Sparty1983 on 5/28/2011 & rated 95 points: Best thing I can say about this wine is that when my sister-in-law took a taste, her reaction was "We aren't drinking a $15 bottle of wine anymore are we!" (2220 views)
Tasted by winetennis on 4/30/2011 & rated 90 points: Popped and aired. Some bricking and orange tinge. Great nose, leather, mild cocoa, dark fruit. Firm and moderate body; great finish, although a bit more age (1-3 years) would complete its transition. Very nice now. (2538 views)
Tasted by drerwinsu on 2/2/2010 & rated 92 points: Drank on Disney cruise. Nice finish. Drink now. Soon will reach its peak. (2698 views)
Tasted by MetFan on 10/5/2007 & rated 90 points: Lots of leather on the nose. Fairly tight and austere when popped, but opened up after an hour or so. More Bordeaux than Cali. Medium bodied, lots of tannins with blackberry and eucalyptus notes. This wine really needs to breathe if you want to drink now, but will benefit from a few more years of cellaring. Lots of potential here, if you're willing to be patient. (3083 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
