Community Tasting Notes (average 92.5 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 21 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Trydebull on 3/18/2020 flawed bottle: Tyvärr gången. Men inte odrickbar. Gav hintar om vad den skulle kunna vara. Inget betyg. (2167 views)
Tasted by Elvis1969 on 4/23/2019 & rated 95 points: Magnum. Lite platt initialt med en svag källarton. Bättre och bättre med luft. Mint, punschpraliner. (2573 views)
Tasted by aquacongas on 11/6/2016 & rated 94 points: Complete Vertival Tasting of Winston Churchill in Magnums and Jero: Am Anfang der stärkste in der Runde mit deutlichen Reifenoten. Toffee, Tabak und Quitenmarmelade, zum Schluß etwas abbauend gegenüber dem 1995er. 94 Punkte (5053 views)
Tasted by jjjj7676 on 6/13/2015 & rated 95 points: Bloody brilliant bottle. Silky, textured, opulent and lovely finish. (5870 views)
Tasted by Nothung on 5/24/2015 & rated 92 points: Beginning to show its age, but still beautiful. (5791 views)
Tasted by thweens on 12/15/2012: Still good tasting, but definitely past peak. Bubble structure was
still there, and you could tell it was more of a traditional champagne in style, but was a bit weak. (6769 views)
Tasted by wickedwax on 3/4/2012: Super-fine bubbles. Aromas of toast, honey, hazelnuts, stone fruit and a little bit of mushroom and floral notes. Rich and full-bodied on the palate with a round and smooth mouthfeel. Good balancing acidity and a very long finish. Perhaps more on the powerful and rich side at the expense of elegance and finesse, but still balanced in its own way. (7004 views)
Tasted by CO CHRIS on 1/28/2011: Yum. (5847 views)
Tasted by CWilliam on 1/27/2011: Loved this wine - preferred to a 1999 La Grand Anne Bollinger. Did not rate or take good notes. (4628 views)
Tasted by graemeg on 2/1/2010: NobleRottersSydney - Hunter Valley (Alio's, Surry Hills): [12%, cork] {Gordon} An aged nose, smelling of a boutique bakery. Toast, sourdough, roasted nuts. Super stuff. A dry, full-bodied palate doesn’t quite deliver the sophistication that was promised, however. Strongly yeast-influenced notes give a medium-long finish, but the bead is on the coarse side a bit, which seems to cost the wine some finesse. So, big and a bit brutal – and if the palate lacks the complexity of the nose, it tastes younger too, so perhaps a few more years’ aging wouldn’t go amiss. (5498 views)
Tasted by wpdavey on 9/20/2009 & rated 91 points: Tiny, tiny bubbles. Fruity and juicy. Smooth from start to finish. Saved us after a chardonnay experience. (3382 views)
Tasted by wpdavey on 7/26/2009 & rated 92 points: Tiny bubbles, honey colored. Nice from start to finish. Not a lot of alcohol at the finish. Not as dry as some brut. Excellent with oysters. (3206 views)
Tasted by JeffGMorris on 11/1/2008 & rated 92 points: Dinner at Steve & Barb's house. Light gold with very persistent, tiny bubbles. The bubbles continued on the palate which was prickly. Slightly oxidative in style, but in a very positive sense. Long sweet finish. Very strong for a '93, this seems to be drinking at peak. 50+12+13+8.5+8.5 = 92 (3258 views)
Tasted by 60ouvrees on 8/17/2008: Figured this would be a good one to open since the '96 is still many years away from being drinkable. The '93 was actually more developed that I would have expected and I don't see it improving much with further cellaring. A pleasant, mature Champagne but this is by no means a great wine. (3216 views)
Tasted by winefool on 10/25/2007 & rated 92 points: WS NYWE Grand Tastings; 10/25/2007-10/26/2007 (Marriott Marquis): From mag. Nice enough, but doesn't really rise to the Winston Churchill level... 92-93 pts. (4834 views)
Tasted by wyno on 1/1/2006 & rated 94 points: Nutty small bubbles, matched perfectly with caviar (3801 views)
Tasted by AndrewSGHall on 4/23/2005: Dinner at Alana's with Phil and Jen: Brioche nose. Soft and creamy body, pale fruit and slighty sweet finish. Big, blowsy champage in the opulent style. Loved the difference from the usual more precise style I drink. Absolutely perfect with apps like salt cod cakes. (4831 views)
Tasted by Eric on 12/20/2003 & rated 91 points: Bearfoot Bistro with Amy & Justin. Suzi opened this via saberage and sadly a bit too much of the bottle was lost. Not ideal but certainly fun. Golden color. A very nice, yeasty nose with a hint of almond. On the palate this is gorgeously creamy with exotic notes of citrus, stunningly complex. Nice length and acidity to the finish and beautiful with an assortment of caviar and blini. (4291 views)

Pol Roger

Producer website
Pol Roger is one of the few remaining family-owned grande marque Champagne houses. Their grande marque status was guaranteed at the turn of the century when about 20 producers banded together
to establish exacting quality controls for Champagne. The annual production at Pol Roger - less than 120,000 cases - is found in the best restaurants of France, England, and the USA, and is exported to
over 30 countries. Pol Roger also was the Champagne of choice of British dignitary Sir Winston Churchill, who once said of Champagne, "...In victory I deserve it, and in defeat I need it!".

Pol Roger Champagne Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill

Winemaker Notes:
Champagne Pol Roger created their Prestige Cuvée in homage to Sir Winston Churchill mindful of the qualities that he sought in his champagne: robustness, a full-bodied character and relative maturity.
The exact blend is a closely guarded family secret but it is undeniable that the composition would meet with the approval of the man to whom it is dedicated: “My tastes are simple, I am easily satisfied
with the best”. Pinot Noir predominates, providing structure, breadth and robustness whilst Chardonnay contributes elegance, finesse and subtlety. Composed exclusively of grapes sourced from Grand Cru
Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vineyards which were already under vine during Churchill’s lifetime, “Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill” is only made in the very best vintages and is always released later than the
other vintage dated Champagnes from Pol Roger, marking Churchill’s appreciation for older wines.

Champagne Blend

"Champagne blend" is a classic grape blend that typically includes Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and/or Pinot Meunier in any proportions.

However, this blend can also include Arbane, Fromenteau (Pinot Gris), Petit Meslier and/or Pinot Blanc as well.

France - When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of consistent quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. Sub-Region:

Champagne - The French region of Champagne (including the cities of Rheims, Épernay, and Aÿ) was the first region in the world to make sparkling wine in any quantity. Today, the name of the region is synonymous with the finest of all sparkling wines, and wine-making traditions of Champagne have become role models for sparkling wine producers, worldwide. Surprisingly, the region of Champagne is now responsible for only one bottle in 12 of all sparkling wine produced. Styles of champagne range in sweetness ranging from an extra brut or brut 0, to the basic brut to demi sec to doux; some houses produce single vintage champagnes and others produce non-vintage (or incorporate wines/grapes of multiple vintages), often to preserve a specific taste; combinations of grape varietals; and colors, including a rosé. There are several sub-appellations, including the Valley of the Marnes river running from Épernay west, Massif de Saint-Thierry north and west of Rheims, Valley of the Ardre, the Mountains of Rheims (between Rheims and Épernay), Côte des Blancs, Côte de Sézanne, and Côte des Bar in the South. Champagne wine only uses three grape varietals (cépages): Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier.
