Community Tasting Notes (average 91.4 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 15 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by WVwino on 1/21/2015 & rated 91 points: Decanted but poured after only about 20 minutes - could have used more time - evolved nicely into a mid toned supple spicy very drinkable wine. (1897 views)
Tasted by kmcminn7 on 1/17/2015 & rated 91 points: Finished off the bottle that we Coravined over the holidays. Haven't changed my initial Thoughts. This is a very nice Rhone styled Syrah,
which usually means not what most people are expecting.

Color is deep, nose I full of fruit , some leather, earth and soft wood. Mouth feel is dense but not overly heavy. Compared to how I remember it when purchased, its time.

Also - now that I actually pulled the cork I can see the seal isn't great. I checked the other 2 and can see seepage in one. if you have this wine, best to inspect your inventory. (1725 views)
Tasted by kmcminn7 on 12/28/2014 & rated 91 points: Nice Syrah. Had it with duck cassoulet and it had mellowed more than enough not to overpower the food. 2 bottles left – my advice is drink up what you’ve got. (1725 views)
Tasted by G_H on 9/17/2014 & rated 94 points: Developer awesomely. Classic central coast, nice concentration (1861 views)
Tasted by Jdubb1123 on 11/28/2013 & rated 91 points: Smooth rich delicious! (1964 views)
Tasted by TEKinsider on 10/1/2013 & rated 92 points: A bit overextracted, but some nice complexity. Not worth the price. (986 views)
Tasted by drycab on 1/19/2013: Popped and Not decanted but left open for an hour before pouring and drinking. Pleasantly surprised by this. Was expecting a typical big California Syrah but got this Rhone style that was much more complicated and no where near as heavy. Really good but took some getting used to! (1294 views)
Tasted by Gravity on 12/12/2012 & rated 93 points: young but approachable - should develop with some time (1653 views)
Tasted by likemywine on 5/7/2012: Young still but with good potential. taste of alcoohol on the palate. need to revisit in a few years. (1033 views)

Producer Website

2007 PharaohMoans Syrah WestSide

From winery website: Our vinicultural goal in this endeavor was to produce a wine exemplifying the exceptional fruit of our 3-acre vineyard in Paso Robles’ Westside appellation and the dense structure of our terroir without the higher levels of ethanol common in many Syrahs. The 2007 Syrah is a blend of 92% Syrah and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon and is showing much of that Northern Rhone style elegance, with juicy black fruit, white pepper and smoky meat character, as well as a tight core of well balanced acid and tannin structure. The mouth has superb attack with a huge volume of fruit beautifully integrated in the flesh. The 2007 vintage was a very small crop but thanks to a hot August and an otherwise cooler growing season, the vines yielded grapes with great extraction and lower than normal and tempered alcohol levels. The wine was aged in a combination of Tarransaud, Saury and L’Ermite French oak.

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
