Tasted by garambler on 8/29/2014 & rated 94 points: I opened this with friends on 8/29/14. It had a rich, deep and extremely elegant bouquet of black cherry, blackberry, raspberry, cola, cinnamon, sassafras and spice aromas. The palate was elegant, balanced and dry with flavors that followed the nose. Our groups average score was 93, mine was 93+ (2459 views)
Tasted by Leomania on 1/17/2014 & rated 93 points: The last bottle of this superb wine. Black currant, cacao, leather, cinnamon, hints of browns sugar, fine-grained tannins and really nice concentration and persistence. Probably has a spot on my desert island top ten list. (2505 views)
Tasted by DRS-Inc on 12/24/2013 & rated 93 points: PnP & let breathe for 30-60 min. Was a big hit among dinner guests & first bottle to go among 1/2 doz. of wines for X-Mas Night dinner. (2115 views)
Tasted by mfriedman12 on 8/31/2013 & rated 94 points: Very delicious, unusual wine. Lots of jammy fruit and dark chocolate. Great wine. (2367 views)
Tasted by DRS-Inc on 8/16/2013: PnP & drank over 4+ hrs. Sim TN as last time w/notes of blackberry fruit, mochachino coffee & chocolate, soft leather & teeth staining chewy tannins. (1388 views)
Tasted by markandsusanw on 11/30/2012 & rated 92 points: Strained for sediment and splash decant ... Rich and dark. Dry and spicy. Really lush and plush, dark purple pour. Smooth, with a firm but not obtrusive backbone. Brambleberry and leather. Really, really good and got better and better, the longer it was open. (3311 views)
Tasted by toddmk on 9/15/2012 & rated 93 points: Absolutely delicious. Outstanding nose. Great core of dark fruit with nice earthy complexity. For $20 this is an amazing value. Unfortunately, I only had one bottle. (3492 views)
Tasted by Leomania on 7/28/2012 & rated 92 points: Notes consistent with previous. Awesome served with a pork cassoulet. (3284 views)
Tasted by DRS-Inc on 7/13/2012 & rated 92 points: Rhone blend of 35% Syrah, 35% Carignan & 30% Grenache. At first PnP, then slow-ox'd 2+ hrs. Complex w/notes of concentrated dark berries & black fruit, leather, graphite, herb, carob, touch of smoked bacon, and a spicy pepper kick on the finish. Lively acidity, firm sweet tannins, full-bodied & medium+ finish. Very nice & a great bargain at <$25. But man, what a big & heavy bottle. (3058 views)
Tasted by vinodolphin on 6/23/2012 & rated 93 points: First bottle opened on Family Vacation. Everyone loved it. Great start to a great week. (2683 views)
Tasted by vinodolphin on 10/18/2011 & rated 93 points: Pulled this out for my birthday. Excellent choice and the first of 4 we have tucked away. Very smooth blend with both Red and Black fruit. Ruth picked up some licorice. We both enjoyed the great mouthfeel and the lingering finish. A great buy for under $30. (3526 views)
Tasted by dlstrauss on 8/13/2011 & rated 92 points: Consistently good (3546 views)
Tasted by Leomania on 6/12/2011 & rated 93 points: A powerful wine. Blueberry, cherry and cocoa on the nose; additional fruits of blackberry and raspberry on the palate along with more cocoa and spice. Nice acidity and good tannins, perfectly oaked. It was a great accompaniment to a New York strip steak at Firewood in Murphys, CA. Everyone at the table enjoyed the wine. (3818 views)
Tasted by beezer6 on 3/23/2011 & rated 93 points: This wine just touches me in all the right ways. SO plush and plump. Heady candied bright cherries and cream, pancake syrup, vanilla, cotton candy and some rose petal.
The palate is equally fruit driven. More bright berries - dark cherries and sweet raspberries. Really sweet tannins and some nice acid.
There is high alcohol but it doesn't come across as heat. The weight of the wine is exquisite and only something you find in much more expensive bottlings. Sexy flashy seductive New World styling. This isn't for everyone but it's right up my alley. (4215 views)
Tasted by Leomania on 2/25/2011 & rated 92 points: A little tight upon first opening on both nose and palate. Used an aerator and waited 30 minutes for the nose to open up before drinking. Very nice, big and concentrated but not a bomb by any means. Pencil shavings and cherry most prominently with good acidity and well-integrated tannins. Paired amazingly well with some Mexican food. (4204 views)
Tasted by dlstrauss on 1/23/2011 & rated 92 points: great, but needs about an hour to open. (4235 views)
Tasted by atubbs on 1/21/2011 flawed bottle: Corked, but still a ton of potential. Structure was there. Needs time, I think. Hoping the remainder of the case is in good shape. Tastes great with short ribs -- like a tawny port. (4283 views)
Tasted by kaptainreboot on 10/28/2010 & rated 93 points: Very balanced (4772 views)

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

Spain

Vinos de España - Wines of Spain (Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior) | Wikipedia
Wine Map on weinlagen-info

Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous [sic] Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net

Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos (when sweetened). But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial). Based on in-spain.info.
