Tasted by Zweder on 11/23/2012 & rated 91 points: Boekenhoutskloof Winemakers dinner. (@ Bottles; Sas van Gent, Netherlands): Classical bouquet with dark berries, cassis and a pleasant touch of sweetness. Same on the palate, good acidity and beautifully soft tannin as well as a pleasant touch of oak. (1138 views)
Tasted by quickben on 12/25/2011 & rated 91 points: Outstanding beautiful nose with blackberry Notes. The palate has a lovely balance - there is lots of structure behind ths to ensure no flabbiness but overall it is supple and lithe. A joy to have a 5* wine when it's latest incarnation received a similar accolade (1455 views)

Boekenhoutskloof

Producer website

U.S. Importer (Addt'l Info)

Boekenhoutskloof is a winery located in the town of Franschoek in the Western Cape region of South Africa.
The producer's name is Afrikaans and means "Ravine of the beech trees". Pronunciation is tricky but can is close to BOO-KEN-HOTES-kluaf". The producer's website gives this pronunciation guide for "Boekenhout": BOOK-N-HOWED.

They produce wines under four brands:
* Boekenhoutskloof. (High-end single-varietal wines: Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Semillon)
* The Chocolate Block (Premium red blend)
* Porcupine Ridge. (Mid-range wines, all single-varietals: Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot)
* The Wolftrap. (A red blend)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon
