Tasted by agnorger on 9/3/2014 & rated 93 points: opened up with time in the glass. very sonoma coast. it had a watermelon/tomato acidity....if that makes sense. v good. (2744 views)
Tasted by 309VEB on 2/16/2014 & rated 85 points: May have been flawed. The wine was cloudy. Taste was OK but nowhere near the expectation that I had based on previous reviews. By the end of the bottle the wine had settled down a bit and it was tasting better, more fruit, less sharp. Hopefully the next bottle will show better. (2889 views)
Tasted by Jbird73 on 10/20/2013 & rated 91 points: Similar to June. Really good stuff just not more at this point. (3056 views)
 Tasted by skp88 on 8/11/2013 & rated 93 points: Exquisite (3232 views)
Tasted by Jbird73 on 6/30/2013 & rated 91 points: Not quite as good as I remember the last bottle. Hopefully just one of those days where the palate isn't firing. Still really really good just not as high as before. (3244 views)
Tasted by Pebben on 2/10/2013 & rated 92 points: Popped and poured. Medium purple core, pink rim. Exquisite nose with hints of raspberries, strawberries, floral perfume and a touch of vanilla – very fresh and lively, fruit dominant and easy on the oak. Fat and well rounded on the palate with a fair bit of sweetness and a little spice. Good concentration, firm structure and respectable length. The only fly in the ointment is the 14,5% alcohol, which is a little too high to be absorbed without leaving a trace. All in all a top-notch new world Pinot though – the bouquet alone justifies the price tag (91-92 points). (1769 views)
Tasted by Jbird73 on 12/24/2012 & rated 92 points: Extremely well balanced wine with a beautiful aroma/nose followed by a medium-bodied mouthfeel and a nice lingering finish that follows through straight from the nose to the finish... this was a pleasure just to smell and could have spent an hour just enjoying the aroma but why not consume too with great friends and a fantastic bottle all-around. I continue to thoroughly enjoy most of Scherrer's offerings. Oddly, the Platt vineyard is the only one I haven't thoroughly enjoyed....I'll have to go back to that again in the near future. a little sad I am down to my last bottle of this vintage now but don't see a need to wait any longer as this is great now!  Tasted by handymom on 12/6/2012 & rated 92 points: Very nice. Holding up nicely. (1368 views)
Tasted by cadamson on 10/28/2012 & rated 92 points: Getting even better. Black cherry, blackberry, good spice and floral notes. Should continue to improve for a while, still pretty young. Wish I had more, but went through my entire half case in the last 18 months. (1475 views)
Tasted by RobbieC on 9/1/2012 & rated 89 points: My second time with this wine. Last bottle was a 92-93 point experience. Not as good this time. Fruit faded a bit, drink now if you have some. Medium body. Fine tannins. Touch of spice or pepper. Good balance. The faded fruit flavors are a disappointment. (1502 views)
Tasted by DonWinspear on 3/27/2012 & rated 87 points: Dark ruby color. Nice nose of strawberry, cherry. Similar palate, although I found the wine somewhat thin and one dimensional. Not a whole lot going on. I really wanted to like the wine more based on reputation and recommendations, but it just never took off. Moderate finish. (1564 views)
Tasted by cadamson on 2/26/2012 & rated 91 points: Black cherry, blackberry, good spice and floral notes. Dark ruby. Still very young. (1589 views)
Tasted by msubulldogtx on 1/27/2012 & rated 92 points: All hail Fred Scherrer! Nice job as usual. Black cherry taste. Dark ruby color. I have kept this wine at 60 degrees in my cellar since bringing it from Scherrer. It has a lot of aging potential and this wine still tastes young right out of the bottle. Glad I have more in the cellar as it will continue to age nicely. Excellent Sonoma Coast vineyards blend. (1571 views)
Tasted by beezer6 on 11/12/2011 & rated 89 points: Pinot Days 2011 (Navy Pier - Chicago, IL): I'm incredibly impressed in my tasting ability. Three times in a span of four years I've nailed this wine with the same score. It's just reassuring.
Less aromatic than the others. Plummy fruit. Good more rustic fruit. Nice clean finish. (2645 views)
Tasted by YellowDogWineBar on 10/13/2011 & rated 92 points: Bouquet of Fall ...brown sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla, chestnuts with an underlying tone of wild strawberries, cola and vanilla. The palate confirms the nose with addition of some spices such sweet paprika and cumin on the mid palate. The palate brings out more earth elements as well. Medium+ acidity, medium body and a medium+ finish. A very enjoyable wine with finesse. (2040 views)
Tasted by treidling on 9/16/2011 & rated 93 points: Jammy cassis, very pleasantly fruity, on the heavy side for a Pinot but not in an aggressive or unpleasant way, good medium tannins at the finish. Excellent all around (1755 views)
Tasted by wequedad on 8/20/2011 & rated 93 points: WOW. Everything a Pinot should be. Deep Garnet color almost to the rim. Nose of dark berries, spice and earth. On the palate there is a blast of blackberry, cassis, forest floor, spice and leather. The complexity is astonding as it rolls from front to back. LOOOONG finiosh. Alcohol doesn't enter into the picture ... it's just fruit and spice and lots of fun.

Very different from Fred;s RRV ... but shows his ability to make wine that represents the vineyard. (2332 views)
Tasted by cadamson on 7/10/2011 & rated 93 points: Wow, this is drinking great right now. Delicious. Fruit, spice, earth. Nice finish. (1924 views)
Tasted by gutt22 on 4/10/2011: 14.5% alcohol. Solid red color. Beautiful bouquet full of black cherry and blackberry fruit, with a touch of earth in the background. In the mouth, precise and delicious, with juicy fruit and compelling earth and spice notes. Mineral notes lace the acidity, and the finish is long and positively endearing. This is just too easy to drink. A- (2090 views)
Tasted by air guitar & pinot noir on 1/29/2011 & rated 93 points: Enjoyed with Keith and Jennie. This seemed a bit more sour cherry in delivery versus the prior bottles I really enjoyed. Maybe I did not let it open up enough. Still had a nicely perfumed nose that offered cherry, spice and tea notes. French oak and good vibrancy and brightness throughout. I was looking for more candied fruit to emerge but this never really unfolded. (1996 views)
Tasted by cadamson on 12/8/2010 & rated 90 points: From a half bottle, some reasonably serious stuffing here, though somewhat reticent and needs some time to unfurl. Black cherry, tea and spice come to mind, bigger than other Scherrer pinot's I have had, but mostly...just young. Bodes well for the future. (2279 views)
Tasted by OneLastSyrah on 10/18/2010 & rated 92 points: 14.5% ABV. Dark black garnet, somewhat translucent. Spicy nose of clove/cinnamon with classy French oak and light pinot funk. Great nose. Medium full bodied with savory black cherry fruit and a note of tea. At first I thought the fruit tasted more sweet and candied, but it rapidly seemed to turn more savory. This wine is in a good place. (2647 views)
Tasted by DougLee on 9/25/2010 & rated 92 points: Dark ruby hue. Concentrated nose of red raspberry, violets, briars, and licorice. Big but beautifully balanced flavors of plum, blackberry, anise, and cinnamon coursing through the palate with intriguing notes of earth and iron as well. Moderate acidity adds a refreshing note, nicely offset by nonobtrusive tannins. Finish is long and marked by earthy but pure raspberry fruit. A delightful and exuberant wine. (2728 views)
Tasted by air guitar & pinot noir on 5/22/2010 & rated 93 points: Enjoyed at dinner with Chris, Slim and Laura. The skirt steak may have overpowered the complexity of flavors and aromas here. Still applauded for being an excellent wine, but did not have the WOW factor I had personally experienced previously. Still, excellent balance and complexity, lovely fruit profile and enduring finish make this a top wine enjoyed by all. (1966 views)
Tasted by gutt22 on 5/14/2010: 14.5% alcohol. Dark cherry color. Lovely nose of blackberry, spice, and earth. In the mouth, a velvety texture leads the way with juicy, plush fruit. Focused and refined, it carries itself across the palate in stately fashion, leaving a trail of complexity. It doesn't quite have the vibrance of the 2007 but is really excellent in its own right. Scherrer Winery

Producer website

Scherrer Winery produces small batches of Pinot Noir, Old Vine Zinfandel, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvingon from the Russian River and Alexander Valleys.

Everyone seems to believe in doing minimal manipulation with the goal of letting the vineyard site speak. Additionally, I try to make good tasting wine that will age well. Since grapes do not walk off the vines and into the winery, let alone into barrels and bottles, we must actually do something with the grapes and wine along the way from time to time. Rest assured that I do try to get in the way as little as possible while trying to achieve the desired outcome. Most of our work is done and choices are made during the harvest season. Afterward, there is little reason to touch a wine on a wonderful trajectory. With the exception of our Dry Rosé, all our wines are bottled without fining or filtration. I regularly underplay the wines' provenance rather than overplay it. This causes some confusion and frustrates merchants who sell our wines. For this, I offer my apologies. I am, however, unlikely to change this deeply engrained habit.

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
