Community Tasting Notes (average 93.1 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 32 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by drwine2001 on 11/13/2020: Deep yellow. White flowers and candied tropical fruit on the nose. Medium weight, more airy and less dense than many Smaragds. Wonderful interplay between some residual sugar, sour and bitter elements. The fruit is both guava and citrus inflected. Lots of soil. This bottle (which was under metallic screw cap by the way) was far more exciting than one tasted earlier this year and in superb shape. I thought it was outstanding. (1745 views)
Tasted by petterkalle on 10/18/2020 & rated 92 points: Golden yellow. Fully mature. Nose with petroleum and rubber. Dry but with a honey tone. Not much minerality left. Very nice but probably declining. Short. Drink now! (1350 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 5/13/2020: Medium yellow. Predominant aromas of yellow peach. Medium weight, off dry, broad, rich, and very easy to enjoy now. It is not a challenging, attention-grabbing wine, and I find it a little short in acidity and minerality. Drink or hold for a few years. (1942 views)
Tasted by alanr on 5/5/2020 & rated 94 points: Wow, what a nose, no rush to even take a taste, such a complex mix of attractive petrol, savory fruit, just captivating; finally moving on, the palate almost lives up to the promise of the nose, with beautifully rich fruit, some of the savory notes, good acidity and perfect balance. Picking nits, could have a bit more layered complexity, but that barely takes away from the flat out deliciousness of the wine. Sorry to see this last bottle in my stash drained. (1705 views)
Tasted by glou.sf on 5/4/2020 & rated 94 points: Tasted blind. Petrol and orange blossom dominate the very typical Riesling nose. On the palate, there's very good acidity, minerals, and oranges, and maybe a hint of residual sugar that's noticeable. Nice finish. This was beautiful, a great example of perfectly aged Riesling! (1417 views)
Tasted by andtheodor on 6/28/2017 & rated 90 points: Lots of rich ripeness pushing this away from lime & slate and towards a GG peachy mineral Riesling. I expected a bit more detail but this was kind of a bomb. (2085 views)
Tasted by brooklynguy on 11/24/2016: From magnum. Absolutely delicious. Floral aromas really do in this case burst from the glass, complex and alluring. Fresh and pure with detailed and expressive aromas and flavors that are floral, ripely fruited, and that also show earthy and stony notes. Just excellent. (2818 views)
Tasted by prism on 8/20/2016 & rated 94 points: Oh, yes. Splendid as ever. Sweet/tart in the best way of wine. My MIL and I polished off a bottle with baked cod. The low-alcohol level of most Rieslings makes for an easy quaffer, and this stuff is nectar. (1928 views)
Tasted by David_K on 8/10/2014 & rated 90 points: Dense and structured, almost statuesque. Nearly chewy it's so concentrated. Slightly oily mouthfeel. Powerful. Very good wine, but I think I would have enjoyed it more had it been vinified completely dry; the (admittedly) slight residual sugar almost makes it feel a little heavy at times. (3340 views)
Tasted by Keith Levenberg on 5/16/2014 & rated 92 points: Delicious but definitely in a leaner phase than the explosive wine that it used to be. Still it has impressive drive on the palate and bright fruit with a pixellated rockiness that hasn't aged a day. (11397 views)
Tasted by mattyboy_ on 5/3/2014 & rated 96 points: Quite possibly one of the best rieslings i've ever drank. Very powerful, electric and explosive. There is no other way to put it, but it's like detonating fruit on the palate with white peach, ripe citrus, pear, and white oolong tea. The electric current of flavors runs deep through the midpalate through to the finish. One of the longest finishes i've ever experienced - went on for minutes. 96-98 pts. (2855 views)
Tasted by prism on 1/4/2014 & rated 94 points: Pretty great stuff, as Reisling goes. Just a bit of snap to a layered, mineral rich wine that strikes a lovely balance of fruit and acidity. (2761 views)
Tasted by prism on 10/27/2013 & rated 94 points: Very nice, again. This is right up my alley in terms of Riesling. Perfect equilibrium between sweet and dry; very easy to drink. Clean but rich: stone fruits, pears and apples. (2701 views)
Tasted by dream on 7/16/2013 & rated 90 points: Fresh and zippy with good limestone and mineral flavors. Finishes with that classic "crushed rocks" note and good complexity and concentration. This was an excellent combo with a zesty salad dressing and pan-fried bass with spicy coppola. (2296 views)
Tasted by fournet on 1/9/2013 & rated 94 points: This is a fantastic wine and was the WOTN on the white side of the slate. Dry but not bone dry. Intoxicating nose, really beautiful. Extremely long finish. This bottle reaffirms my belief that Austria makes my favorite Rieslings. (2473 views)
Tasted by Riccardo Malocchio on 11/21/2012 & rated 94 points: Drunk from a 750ml over two nights. Mirroring Keith's experience, I was surprised by both the additional heft and fruit on day two, but even moreso by the immensity of the extract, an even deeper impression of minerality, and the piquancy and pricklyness of the acid. Simply an outstanding wine, or in TT's words on the vintage in general, "derangedly superb". (2538 views)
Tasted by Keith Levenberg on 8/28/2012 & rated 94 points: This has softened up a touch since release but it's still a thrilling bottle and hasn't closed down yet. The first day it's all stony, linear, and precise. The next day the leftovers show beautifully fresh and fleshy fruit, like biting into a perfectly ripe peach. From a magnum. (4131 views)
Tasted by prism on 5/19/2012 & rated 94 points: Really nice. Slight effervescence in initially, then settles in to a great balance of crushed stone, pear, quince, honey, and sweet herbs. Very refreshing juxtaposition of acidity, sweetness, and heft. Recommended. (2550 views)
Tasted by prism on 1/7/2012 & rated 93 points: Day One: I had just a sip. I like this a lot, enjoyed the minerality and the acid, but it was a little on the sweet side for tonight's white drinkers. Revisit.
Day Three (vacu-vined and refrigerated). An outstanding Riesling. What's not to like? It did seem a little sweet on Day One, on the heels a slightly oakey (but delicious) medium-bodied Cali Chard fro Talley, but the Heilegenstein was splendid this evening. Up a point, plus. (2573 views)
Tasted by Riccardo Malocchio on 10/18/2011 & rated 94 points: Poised, vibrating with potential energy, and the purest, most convincing expression of minerality I've ever encountered in a wine. Crushed gravel, a prickle of grapefruit and lime, flower petals, flint, wisps of smoke, the merest shadow of honeysuckle sweetness, and a finish of pure liquid granite. I am humbled and awestruck by the power and seriousness of this wine, the stark beauty of its ineffable depths, my failure to capture any of that in this note.

Tasted by markellen.foodies@gmail.com on 7/2/2011 & rated 93 points: SUNSET CORNERS - It's Riesling Time!: Sunset Corners@$49.99 great fruit balance and acidity. Really like it. (2865 views)
Tasted by dream on 3/5/2011 & rated 92 points: Lovely nose of spicy minerals and lime. Loads of mouthwatering acidity give way reluctantly to limestone and crushed rock flavors. Finishes rich and finely concentrated with mineral-driven complexity. Needs some time for the acidity to settle down but I love the purity of crushed rock flavors that emerge from this "Hell's Rock" vineyard. 92+ (2541 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 5/3/2010 & rated 91 points: Gorgeous Austrian Wines from Wine Importers Tasting, including Bründlmayer, Donabaum, Kracher, Nikolaihof and Prager (Officers' Club, Fort Mason, San Francisco): Fresh, light lime, floral, spice nose; tight, tasty, light lime, mineral, peach palate; medium finish 91+ pts. (4276 views)
Tasted by last chance on 4/16/2010 & rated 93 points: The nose of this wine had citrus, melon, brown spices, and floral aromas. The palate was very complex with ruby grapefruit, lime and peach flavors complimented by subtle notes of crushed rocks and spices. Excellent mouthfeel and acidity as well as a long finish. This was really great stuff, and it was even a little too cold when I tasted it. (2930 views)
Tasted by Siggy on 3/16/2010 & rated 95 points: Multiple bottles tasted with consistent notes. Continues to impress. Unbelievably complex nose. Biting minerality, juicy stone fruits, and watermelon rind/cucumber on the palate, which shows riveting energy and length. Just fabulous stuff and a complete steal at $34. (3616 views)

Hirsch Vineyards, Kamptal Austria
Regarded as one of the most dynamic and engaging young winemakers in Austria, Johannes Hirsch is well placed to further the evolution of Austrian wine. With access to some of the finest vineyards in the Kamptal region, a dedicated approach to viticulture, and incredible attention to detail, innovative and adventurous spirit, making this one of the most exciting estates in Austria. Although they are located in a relatively small viticultural area, the vineyards Johannes works with are incredibly diverse. From the Lamm vineyard (south-facing slopes with soil composed of löss and loam), to the Heiligenstein vineyard (a bowl-shaped vineyard with southern exposure and conglomerate soils of desert sandstone embedded with decomposed volcanic and carbonized vegetation), to the Gaisberg vineyard (soils of fertile brown earth and crystalline rock), use of biodynamic practices allows him to get the best of his raw materials. In the cellars a fairly traditional approach is maintained. Fermentations are achieved through ambient yeasts, and wines are kept separate with very little blending, the vineyard is the most important expression. Johannes was a very early adopter of stelvin closures in the country, and his confidence has been validated by a recent study that confirms not only the quality of the seal but also the aging abilities. A respect for nature is coupled with an intricate knowledge of bio-dynamic practices.

Zöbinger Heiligenstein

a single vineyard in Kamptal. exact position on weinlagen.info

The Heiligenstein is currently considered by most winelovers to be one of the very best vineyards in all of Europe. Here, volcanic rock has been blanketed with desert sandstone from the Permian period – this formation, which arose some 250–270 million years ago, offers a solid basis for growing the finest Rieslings. The microclimate in this shell-shaped vineyard stimulates the aromas that are the most characteristic of this noble variety. And between the vineyard parcels one encounters flora and fauna that are more typically found in far distant southern, Mediterranean environs.
