Tasted by Blake Brown on 5/2/2017 & rated 92 points: 1997 RIDGE PAGANI RANCH SONOMA VALLEY MATARO [MOURVEDRE] [4 btls]- blended with 23% Zinfandel; a fruit bomb that hits the WOW factor big time; loaded with fresh, ripe cherry/ berry notes, it sings a happy tune. (800 views)
Tasted by yhn on 3/13/2017 & rated 93 points: No notes taken. Dense, focused, lots of power with good acid and balance. Still youthful, but coming into its own. (1171 views)
Tasted by RajivAyyangar on 3/20/2016 & rated 85 points: Ridge Monte Bello component tasting (and a Meursault!) (Ridge Vineyards, Santa Cruz, CA): (not sure whether this is Pagani Ranch or Bridgehead).
Structured (m+ acid and m+ tannins, though developed). Stewed red fruits. (1601 views)
Tasted by wabi47 on 3/28/2015 & rated 90 points: Still solid wild berry and enough mineral/acidity to keep it interesting (1068 views)
Tasted by beerenauslese on 8/21/2012 & rated 91 points: Transparent deep garnet color. Using a screwpull, the cork came apart leaving a third behind, but no other issues. After decanting an hour, nice nose emerges with concentrated blackberries and cherries, and some wood and earth notes. Tastes with a delightful concentration of berry and cherry fruit flavors and is still tart, tannins are minimal, and some earthy, pebble notes, with a long, peppery, earthy and tart finish. Really delightful. (1712 views)
Tasted by winenutnyc on 11/17/2011: easily the biggest surprise of a wine for me in years. This is really good- iron, rich fruits and nice texture. It was actually on the shelf to taste and drink or taste and pour out. (2410 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 3/6/2011 & rated 90 points: Ridge 2010 Monte Bello Component Tasting and picnic (Ridge Barn, Tasting Room and picnic area, Monte Bello Vineyard, Cupertino, California): Bricking medium dark red violet color; reduction, very tart berry, smoke, leather nose; reduction, tart berry, black fruit, mineral, char, charcoal palate with depth; long finish 90+ points (77% Mourvedre, 23% Zinfandel) (1424 views)
Tasted by AlexHop on 9/10/2009 & rated 91 points: Wow, really good. Not much nose but the flavor is unique and still has lots of fruit- cherry and stone fruit. (1567 views)

Ridge

Producer website | Wikipedia

Ridge Vineyards is a California winery specializing in premium Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Chardonnay wines. Ridge produces wine at two winery locations in northern California. The original winery facilities are located at an elevation of 2,300 feet (700 m) on Monte Bello Ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA near Cupertino, California. The other Ridge winery facilities are at Lytton Springs in the Dry Creek Valley AVA of Sonoma County.

Pagani Ranch

The old Pagani Ranch on the east side of Sonoma Valley. 100-year-old zinfandel, petite sirah, alicaante, mataro, and carignane vines.

(Fall 2012 Ridge Wine Club notes:)

Since 1991, Ridge has made zinfandel from the old Pagani vineyard on the east-facing side of the Sonoma Valley. All the vines were planted 90 to 115 years ago.

This is a fine example of what we look for in a vineyard: low-yielding old vines, carefully tended by a quality-conscious family who, in this case, have worked the land for four generations.

The climate here is generally cooler than at Lytton Springs.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

Sonoma County

Mendocino County

Sonoma Valley

Sonoma County, California, is one of the most important winegrowing regions in the whole of the United States. Vines have been planted here since the 1850s and, apart from the inevitable hiatus brought about by Prohibition, the county's relationship with wine has been prolific and unbroken.

Viticulturally speaking, Sonoma County is divided into three distinct sections: Sonoma Valley, Northern Sonoma and Sonoma Coast. Each of these has its own AVA title and encompasses several sub-AVAs within its boundaries.
