Community Tasting Notes (average 91.6 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 104 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by hadukla on 1/7/2024 & rated 93 points: While oak was noticeable on its own, the rest of the flavours weren't shut out because of it. We thought it was very nice, complex, round and most importantly, not too sweet. Struck a great balance in that regard. Looking forward to the 1985. (987 views)
Tasted by lozatron on 9/11/2023: Home of Food Festival (Lord's): More balanced than the 2003 which preceded it, and with a lovely nose of honeysuckle, quince. Something odd on the palate though - a kind of muteness from the TCA covered up by the sweetness maybe? I asked the winemaker to taste it and he thought it was good, and my tablemates liked it also, so perhaps a root day for me. Paired with Young Buck from the Courtyard Dairy. (1512 views)
Tasted by Jd6725 on 6/10/2023 & rated 91 points: 89 on first opening. Overtly sweet and disjointed. After a couple days in the fridge it got much better and balanced though. Wait at least 10 years. (1411 views)
Tasted by CranBurgundy on 4/30/2023 & rated 91 points: The nose is milder than the palate, misleading you to think this isn't that strong flavored. One sip tells otherwise, with nice citrus plus some tropical fruit with very good acidity and a tiny hint of ginger-ish spice that seems to go along with chenin blanc. As the bottle warmed, it didn't fall off one bit. (1583 views)
Tasted by wetlandwino on 1/7/2023 & rated 93 points: Super refreshing and satisfying dessert wine with pleasingly moderate sweetness. Just a lovely sipping wine with hints of tropical fruit on the nose. and palate. (1888 views)
(2019 views)
Tasted by rossi.wine on 9/15/2022 & rated 93 points: Tasted after 2002 and 1997. Much cleaner and deeper than the latter. Similar to 2002, a little more intense and complex maybe. 92-94 (1889 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 9/15/2022 flawed bottle: Luis Returns! (Tilia, Mpls): Lightly corked or at least, not quite right. (1770 views)
Tasted by grafstrb on 9/8/2022 & rated 91 points: -- popped and poured --
-- tasted non-blind over a couple hours --

NOSE: papaya; hints of apricot marmalade and botrytis.

BODY: golden yellow color; full bodied.

TASTE: papaya; hint of botrytis; ripe apricot; kumquat; sweet; medium-low acidity; alc. not noticeable; decent pairing with dinner of jerked chicken, grilled pineapple, and beans & rice: likely would have been an even better pairing had the jerked chicken actually been spicy as it should have been. Markedly better than the bottle I had on 6/01/2013.
Drink or Hold.

Tasted by MC2 Wines on 7/2/2022: Bordeaux night with Friends (Rue St Mark): I hope I got the vintage right for this. It was the end of the night and as I'm writing up notes I realized this is just purely off memory. First thought is very sweet and probably because it was coming off the Clos Rougeard which is obviously a much more herbal style of wine and then this is sweetness. Paired with a few different cheeses. The right kindof wine for a small glass at the end of the evening to hit the sweet tooth craving (let's be fair - I feel that way about most sweet wines where a small glass usually does it). Enjoyable for that though. (2017 views)
Tasted by Crew Beaujolais Boys on 3/11/2022: Waxy (1758 views)
Tasted by arvidpalmqvist on 12/19/2021: Bruised apples, almonds, hints of wet wool and caramelized sugar. Orange marmalade, mixed citruses and sultanas. Great balance between acidity and sweetness. Paired nicely with comté and marmalade, but also worked fine with a saffron bun. (1874 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 12/17/2021: By the glass pour. Light golden. Each time I've tasted this, there has been some impurity. Unfortunately, tonight the dirtiness was the dominant feature, and it outcompeted the medium weight, moderately sweet fruit. Not enjoyable. (2280 views)
Tasted by wetlandwino on 12/16/2021 & rated 95 points: This is a superb dessert wine. Beautiful light bronze color, honey-fruit on the nose, and palate of honey and pear. Drinking great now but will be interesting to see how it ages, given the reputation of this wine. (1841 views)
Tasted by Burglover13 on 9/23/2021 & rated 92 points: Fortunately brought a backup to dinner as first bottle fell flat. Bottle #2 was singing alongside an almond cake. Initially atouch shy it opened quickly to notes of honey, pears and stone fruits. Medium weight with good acidity, this wine will evolve for many years. (1929 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 7/27/2021: Deep yellow. Some funk and VA which blew off. Medium weight. Not terribly sweet. Much purer in the mouth with a little honey but mainly pear and stone fruit. Excellent acidity and length. Quite elegant dessert wine in great shape at 25 years of age. (2558 views)
Tasted by jsherdc on 2/19/2021 & rated 92 points: Tasted old initially, but came alive day 2. 92/93 (2220 views)
Tasted by andtheodor on 8/28/2020 & rated 93 points: Honeyed pear, candles, waxy and complex but not like white Rioja. Magical, celebratory stuff. (2585 views)
Tasted by kfrench150 on 12/26/2019 & rated 94 points: Pours quite viscous. Shiny new brass colour in the core grading to a clear rim. Sweet nose of lanolin, apricots, botrytis spice and wet slate on the nose. Thick and rich on the palate with enough cleansing acidity to keep it just short of being cloying. More apricot, peach, tangy botrytis spice, red delicious apple and stony flavours. Unctuously mouth coating with a long finish lush with sweet yellow stone fruit and searing acidity. Excellent and probably nigh immortal! (3277 views)
Tasted by Alykhan V on 12/14/2019 & rated 92 points: Off-dry to medium
Red apple, beeswax, honey, mushroom!

Tasted by La cave à JC on 10/12/2019 & rated 89 points: A Little light on palate. I liked the nose, honey and apricot. Golden color. (2949 views)
Tasted by maxima on 9/26/2019 & rated 87 points: Assez rancio et limite oxydé, possiblement VES aussi!

Tasted by drwine2001 on 7/20/2019: A Few Days in Seattle; 7/19/2019-7/21/2019: Light amber. Honey and quince. Sweet pear fruit, excellent acidity, just a touch of dirt at the end. A real success in the hit or miss world of Moulin Touchais. At its absolute peak. (3184 views)
Tasted by FrancoisC on 6/20/2019 & rated 92 points: Encore bon pour quelques années! (2313 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 4/13/2019: Pizza Experiment Night (Rocknroller's (Kevin & Vicki's Place)): Light medium gold color. PNP, drank a glass over 30 minutes plus. Really odd nose with wood and burnt cedar, smoky and a bit musty, light candied apricot. The palate is wood, cedarbox, smoke, pear, good acid, very much alive, waxy, lanolin, more subtle dried apricot. Not very sweet, a little more than off dry at most. Good viscosity. The wood notes are entirely too dominant on this bottle. Not corked, not sure it is representative though based on other notes here. I like it, but surely different. I've had some of these old Chenin that take on some unusual characteristics though this one was even more different. 89 to 90ish points? (3081 views)

(MOULIN Touchais) Moulin Touchais Dear Friends, There are sacred properties in the wine-world, those that inspire a sense of reverence and loyalty due to their singular commitment from generation to generation. No fads, no new oak, no technology. Bourdy is one of those properties, here is another. Moulin Touchais is synonymous with the Loire. Like Huet or any of the great properties of the region, Touchais has not and will not deviate from their style, regardless of fashion. They create Coteaux du Layon and that is their signature. No red wine (that I know of) and little if any sec for their personal consumption. Moulin Touchais is about one wine and one style - an ultra-traditional, sweet Chenin Blanc that is aged for at least a decade at the property and released when they deem appropriate (the current release is 1999/2000). As an educational force, this wine is a lesson unto itself. Known to age for 50-75 years or more (vintages in the mid 1800's are still going strong - just like Bourdy), Moulin Touchais is justifiably proud of their heritage and it is quite obvious they are not in the game for money (how would you like to perform a job function only to receive compensation 10-15 years later, on occasion 20-30 years later? Maybe that's ok if it's a retirement plan but this is their only means of sustenance? Talk about one generation feeding the next). Passion is their driving force and so is terroir - one of the Loire's most admired (not necessarily for the perceived greatness of the land but for the legendary results captured in each bottle they choose to seal with the Moulin Touchais label). Below we have two standout vintages in the Loire, 1971 and 1996. Both capture the essence of this house and their non-botrytis style of residual Chenin Blanc. If you are used to Baumard Quarts de Chaume or even something like Cuvee Zenith from Renou, this wine will come as quite a shock. It is only mildly sweet by comparison with more of an emphasis on the overall fruit/sugar/acid balance and resulting complexity that comes with age. Keep in mind, Moulin Touchais does not reach full maturity for at least 20-30 years but it can also be enjoyed in youth for its eccentric leaning. To give you an idea of the style, here is David Schildknecht's review of the 1985 (the 1971 and 1996 have not been reviewed, you can check community notes - JR): "An iconic Loire estate, Moulin Touchais ferments in stainless and bottles after only 6-8 months, then holds wine back for at least a decade. These would, I suspect, seldom count among the elite of their appellation in any given vintage, but the opportunity to benefit from maturation and at reasonable prices should not be missed. While I tasted both younger and older current releases, two stood out. The Moulin Touchais 1985 Coteaux du Layon smells alluringly of baked apple, apple jelly, pink pineapple, and heady flowers. Lusciously rich on the palate, yet not lacking cut or clarity, it carries honey, baked apple and grapefruit into a long, rich, if not rivetingly complex finish. Heaven knows I would be delighted for the opportunity to sip a glass of either of these (1985 or 1989) in a restaurant, whether as aperitif, with foie gras, or in lieu of dessert" A singular producer with a singular style...doing things the way their ancestors did in the 1800's. This parcel is directly from the winery cellar with the finest provenance we can muster - it has never moved from the winery since bottling: 1971 Moulin Touchais Coteaux du Layon 750ml 1996 Moulin Touchais Coteaux du Layon 750ml Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Loire7198 Loire7897

Sommelier Journal, January 2009
(Moulin Touchais Coteaux du Layon, Loire Valley) At a recent tasting at Christie’s in New York, the 1996 displayed a deep straw-yellow color, with floral notes on the nose and a pronounced suggestion of honey and coconut—completely primary, showing no evolution at all. On the palate, the wine was rich and full-bodied, demonstrating balanced acidity and good length. Winery Spotlight: Moulin Touchais

Moulin Touchais

Producer website (US importer)

Moulin Touchais dates back to 1787, when the Touchais family first managed the wine estate. Eight generations on, it is still family owned and is amongst the most traditional properties in the Loire Valley. The traditional methods of viticulture are still in place; low-yields, careful harvesting and meticulous winemaking. Although they have been built upon and improved over the years.
Moulin Touchais has one hundred and fifty hectares of vineyard, thirty five of which are dedicated to sweet wines of the Chenin Blanc grape. The harvesting strategy is to pick 20% of the grapes under ripe so they are still fresh and high in natural acidity, and 80% are picked late with the grapes yielding high sugar levels and concentrated flavours. This creates the smooth and elegant style of a Moulin Touchais wine. The fermentation process is spread over several weeks, and the wine is bottled early and cellared for a minimum of ten years before leaving under the Moulin Touchais name.
