Community Tasting Notes (average 89.5 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 57 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by finewinebuff57 on 6/24/2023 & rated 89 points: From a half. Cork not as bad as others have experienced. Gently sweet now, but candidly still youthful. This will go on (and on). (256 views)
Tasted by zach thielemann on 10/15/2022 & rated 89 points: As others have mentioned, cork was in absolutely terrible condition even with a perfect storage history. After some cleaning and careful uncorking, pours out of the bottle a rich golden color. Not as dark as a I'd expect from a 32 year old white.

On the nose, rich butter with a hint of mushroom. Palate is similar. Not super sweet, but with any less sweetness the minerality and age would be a lot more noticeable. Shockingly, although the acidity is nearly gone, there is a ghostly presence of apple for the first hour of opening.

Nearly dead after 2 hours of opening. Oxidizes quickly. Drink now, this ain't getting any better. (395 views)
Tasted by Mr T on 4/1/2021: similar to last July's bottle in virtually all respects (552 views)
Tasted by Mr T on 7/11/2020: Cork hideous and definitely showing it’s age but still pleasant to drink and paired well with Chinese takeout, much of it spicy. Not at all cloying and only moderately sweet. Still very good (614 views)
Tasted by Mr T on 9/29/2016: Maybe the ugliest, loosest cork yet, but still delish and what a crazy value this is/was. Still has petrol, acid and sweetness in excellent balance. Seem to be ageless....yum (1957 views)
Tasted by Mr T on 2/7/2016: Still solid and complex
Love these (2176 views)
Tasted by Brix on 1/7/2013 & rated 90 points: This wine just keeps improving with age, and our most recent bottle was better after it had been opened for a couple of days. This suggests to me that there's lots more life in these, and I intend to hold my last bottle for at least another couple of years. As others have noted, lots of waxy lanolin mouthfeel, coupled with ripe apple and floral notes. Complex and satisfying, but lacking a certain linearity or definition to make it truly great. (4131 views)
Tasted by Brix on 5/27/2012 & rated 87 points: Under the capsule, a typically nasty, totally-soaked cork... but the wine is delightful: medium burnished gold in color, with long, slow legs in the glass. Pungent petrol and musky tropical flowers on the nose. Slightly oily and viscous on the tongue, with honey, waxy apple, some citrus and pineapple. Slightly muddled flavors, but with a long, lingering finish. Picked this up a few years ago for a whopping $12 per bottle - no complaints. (4461 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 5/10/2012 & rated 91 points: Nice and waxy, medium-sweet, no great definition but good intensity and length. Showing very well today, will last. (4306 views)
Tasted by decaturwinedude on 7/29/2011 & rated 88 points: Rich yellow color. Appears young. Nose shows sweet caramel apple amidst some nice hints of funk. Hazelnuts and sweet fruit on the palate with a wee touch of acid. Not nearly the acid spine as the bottle last year, at least I'm not perceiving the acid this time. Maybe reached the point of going nowhere good from here on out. Enjoyable, from a novelty standpoint now. Good, but that's it, really. Drink 'em now. (3166 views)
Tasted by Anthony Lombardi on 4/13/2011: Yellow gold. The nose shows honeysuckle, pineapple and some petrol. Beautiful and complex. Off- dry on the palate with a mix of honeyed lemon and green apple notes. Medium bodied with high acidity. Very refreshing mouthfeel here. Good length with some pineapple and tart white fruit lingering about.

This one has plenty of life ahead of it. Grab them if you see them! (3808 views)
Tasted by tooch on 4/10/2011 flawed bottle: DOA. (1801 views)
Tasted by CerveloGuy on 3/27/2011: Still alive and kicking. This bottle showed some of the funky aged chenin flavors I like, but was not as good as the last bottle I had. (2482 views)
Tasted by tooch on 1/15/2011 & rated 86 points: Lots of apples and pears. Not overly complex at this point, with a touch of sherry on the finish. (1855 views)
Tasted by Faryan on 10/25/2010 & rated 91 points: The wine has a lush and ripe mouthfeel with great poise and notes of pear, honey and some stemminess. With more time, the acidity integrates more properly and some of that Vouvray funk/astringency settles. More botrytized notes emerged later on the night. A very nice wine to start things off. (1824 views)
Tasted by SpoochMan on 10/22/2010 & rated 89 points: PnP at party for D&D, with dessert. The cork was soaked through and a total mess, but this wine seemed to be in good shape. It was fairly light and delicate, with a nice balance of sweetness and acidity. Impressed with the longevity of this wine. (2455 views)
Tasted by Biskuit on 7/26/2010 & rated 92 points: Really nice wine, I would have pegged it for a good spatlese/auslese with some age on it. Nice deep honey gold color. Ripe pineapple and a touch of petrol in the nose, fruity and steely at once, with a backbone of "funk." Lush mouthfeel, rich citrus, great depth and balance of sweet to acidity, bright lasting flavors of pineapple and lemon. (2628 views)
Tasted by Brix on 6/20/2010 flawed bottle: Corked to high heaven. Pity, because the sip I tried showed some promise, but there was no getting past the stench of TCA on this one. (2642 views)
Tasted by decaturwinedude on 6/18/2010 & rated 90 points: Still a rather vibrant yellow color. Fleshy and soft palate with sweet fruit and cool minerality. Apricot and hazelnut flavor, but a spine here, too, that keeps the botrytis in line. Very nice indeed. (1897 views)
Tasted by ed-d on 3/23/2010 & rated 90 points: Tasted blind. A bit closed on the nose with some slight melon trying to emerge. Big sweetness on the palate with flavors of apricot, some peach & melon. A bit of nuttiness on the finish. Nice, but very sweet. Needs spicy food to shine. (2535 views)
Tasted by Vegasorbust02 on 11/2/2009: Opened and tasted to study for my level 2. It was delight full and ripe, yet with definite complexity. Pretty decent acidity still too. My mom's favorite of the night (2880 views)
Tasted by Chomsky on 10/5/2009: Phenomenal, pristine bottle. Cork was a mess as usual, but this bottle was ultra-fresh and as powerful as a laser. Despite the great variation these wines show bottle-to-bottle, at the tariff it's so worth it since every once in a while they are this good. (3234 views)
Tasted by The_Dolphin on 8/1/2009 & rated 80 points: Surprising sweet, yet nearly caramel taste. Definitely time to drink up. (3043 views)
Tasted by abh on 5/4/2009: Great bottle. The most rancid cork imaginable, but what was underneath was great. Some bottles have been sweeter than this, but god this an amazing buy. (3072 views)
Tasted by JeffnCin on 3/4/2009: We've had several bottles of this wine in the last year and a half, and this was the first without a gross and filthy cork. It was also the first that let us down. This particular bottle had no character -- no petrol, no tea, no grass, no lemon peel. It was rather sweet and very one-dimensional. After something like 10 bottles of this wine, we finally found one that just didn't age nicely. Ah well. For this price, we're willing to take one on the chin. Hopefully, the next bottle (we've still got a few in the cellar) will have the icky cork and the wonderful flavor. :) (3426 views)

(Aigle Vouvray) COLOR-medium golden; NOSE-dried up lemon; funkiness; TASTE-so heavy on lemon; this is beautiful wine; the mouthfeel is where this wine excels; has the complexity & lushness that curves around your palate; has subtle back end acidity to match w/ foods; a real shot of Pineapple candy on the finish; some nice residual sugar; GV-91+  91+ points
