Tasted by MC2 Wines on 3/6/2021: In retrospect I wish I'd let the bottle live upright for a bit and decanted for sediment and rebottled, but we have two more bottles so lessons learned. This is in a lovely aged Cali stage. Bit more fruit forward. Very accessible. You can tell there's some age but it still works for people who like younger wines. To me it was drinking really nicely.  Tasted by fdub on 6/6/2020 flawed bottle: Corked (1320 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 2/23/2019 & rated 84 points: Double blind. Clearly another older wine. Tea, raisin and plum notes. Sour and acidic, with dark plummy fruit. No guesses. (1919 views)
Tasted by MrMoose on 7/11/2015 & rated 90 points: the best US merlot.......elegant, smooth, dk fruits and mild jam & tea notes (3817 views)
Tasted by tcosgriff on 2/5/2015 & rated 87 points: Purple color with a bouquet and flavor dominated by leather, with a prickly finish. Unfortunately, it quickly became harsh and unpleasant after a little airing, likely reflecting its age. (4198 views)
Tasted by tcosgriff on 1/15/2014 & rated 89 points: Purple color with a moderate bouquet and flavor of boysenberry followed by a bit of oak. Not much wow left in the wine at its current age, but still very drinkable, with enough balance and body, and no jarring notes. Drink it up! (4346 views)
Tasted by Alex H on 11/9/2013 & rated 86 points: Sweet smelling wth black plums and berries and pauillac like leather, spice and sweet green capsicums. Rounded and full. (4626 views)
Tasted by Paul S on 10/23/2013 & rated 90 points: Non-FIGSA Lunch (Absinthe, Boat Quay, Singapore): Not the most exciting wine, but this was a well-made, pleasurable drink that is at a pretty good place now. I liked the nose, with its ripe aromas of cassis and blackberries on a bed of earth and meat, with rather Bordelais tones of capsicums, tobacco and tea leaf chasing behind. The palate had a plush richness to its blackberry and plum flavours that took you right back to Napa though. I would have liked a bit more acidity on it, but that could just be because we were drinking this rather big wine on a hot afternoon. Otherwise, the balance was actually decent, with a touch of juiciness on the midpalate and some powdery tannins adding a sense of structure towards the finish, which fluttered away with a mouthful of spice and a little earthy undertone. A bit anonymous, but a tasty enough drink. (5328 views)
Tasted by Ericsson on 8/8/2013 & rated 87 points: Bouteille et bouchon en parfaite condition. Into the neck. Non décanté. Rouge brique, assez opaque. Nez de prunes cuites et autres fruit bien műrs. Bouche assez molle et épaisse. Absence de trame acide ce qui en fait un vin peu élégant. Finale assez longue et vigoureuse. Ŕ boire, selon moi ne s'améliorera plus. (2695 views)
Tasted by devman on 6/11/2013 & rated 87 points: Decanted due to sediment. Typical 90s Napa Merlot. Slight bricking on the edges, but very clean overall. The nose is of raisined fruit, with a bit of oak. There's some spice in there, but it's a fruit bomb on the nose. On the palate, it's a low acid, no tannin fruity mess. Drinks fine by itself, but doesn't go with food at all. The finish is a bit bitter, but does last a while. (2559 views)
Tasted by RBHP on 2/17/2013 & rated 99 points: Excellent wine, one of the best I've had of the vintage. Would recommend it to all. (2222 views)
Tasted by WildeMeeuw on 8/29/2010 & rated 90 points: 1998 Pahlmeyer Merlot (USA, California, Napa Valley) Kleur: Robijnrood Aroma / bouquet: Krachtig en vlezig, donker fruit, tomatenpuree, teakhout, koffie. 50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 11 + Smaak / Afdronk: 16 + Algemeen / potentieel: 8 = 90/100 (3443 views)
Tasted by austinwinesalon on 12/9/2009 & rated 94 points: The Salon's first lab (Mirabelle Restaurant Austin, Texas): Tasted blind, a favorite of many tasters as it drank well now. With a fruity nos and quite, ripe, it had notes of sweet black and red fruit, dark chocolate. It was a classic merlot with good acidity as it coated the mouth with cherry cola flavors. A nice food wine and the surprise favorite of this merlot flight, though it probably is at its prime and will not improve. (4267 views)
Tasted by Michael on 5/14/2009 & rated 90 points: Favorite at the party. People drank it up quick. soft and tasty. wish I had more. (3836 views)
Tasted by drycab on 6/15/2008 & rated 87 points: nice wine but not what I expected in terms of fruit. Lighter than the cab as expected but not as much body as expected. Kind of a lightweight. (3565 views)
Tasted by skwid on 1/5/2006: Drunk from Riedel Somm Bordeaux glasses. Wine was not decanted at first then about 45 minutes in we poured the wine into the decanter.

Seemed a bit muted at first with lots of oak showing. Giving the glass a good swirl opened things up some and showed some fruit. After pouring this into the decanter it really opened up but then at about the 3 hour mark just fell flat. (4309 views)
Tasted by plitton on 11/24/2005 & rated 89 points: Cona Thanksgiving 2005; 11/23/2005-11/27/2005: Fine tannins. Raspberries, cinnamon, nutmeg. (6014 views)

Pahlmeyer

Producer website

Jayson Pahlmeyer, recently joined by his daughter Cleo Pahlmeyer, have been producing highly sought-after, seductive, hedonistic wines since 1986. Pahlmeyer's flagship wine is the Proprietary Red, a Napa Valley Bordeaux blend. Chardonnay, Merlot and Pinot Noir round out this stunning portfolio. These wines are produced from exceptional mountain vineyards in the Napa Valley and Sonoma Coast, including the Pahlmeyer family’s Waters Ranch (Atlas Peak AVA) and Wayfarer Farm (Fort Ross/Seaview AVA). These vineyards, coupled with winemakers Kale Anderson and Bibiana Gonzalez Rave's passion and talent, turn out wines with power and finesse.

Merlot

Merlot is a dark blue–colored wine grape variety, that is used as both a blending grape and for varietal wines. The name Merlot is thought to be a diminutive of merle, the French name for the blackbird, probably a reference to the color of the grape. Its softness and "fleshiness", combined with its earlier ripening, makes Merlot a popular grape for blending with the sterner, later-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon, which tends to be higher in tannin.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
