Community Tasting Notes (average 92.5 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 164 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Latache01 on 3/8/2024 & rated 95 points: The wine was still too young in 2024. The very dense texture of the wine is characterised by fine cassis, berries, nougat and cherries as well as fully ripe peppers. The long and complex finish is pleasantly fresh with present but very fine tannins. Probably at its peak in 10-15 years. (956 views)
Tasted by Tao on 2/1/2024 & rated 95 points: Ready to drink, but not ready to shine at this moment! Dark, opaque colour! Gorgeous nose of sweet, ripe, caramel black fruits. Intoxicated aromas! Dense and young on the palate, I think it needs some years of cellaring! (1337 views)
Tasted by spineguy on 11/24/2023 & rated 93 points: Tobacco, graphite, and darker fruit readily apparent on the nose. Definitely connected to Graves. Nicely in its secondary phase but still a bit tight upon opening. Needed about 30-45 minutes in the decanter and then continued to evolve quickly. Cassis and blackberries with a hint of bacon on the palate. Well put together. Nicely evolving and has at least a decade or 2. (1659 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 9/26/2023: Wonderfully evolved, coffee, mocha and leather to it. Lively and fresh still, very good tension. Just opened. Smooth, fresh, and just super drinkable. Damn, as it opens it just get better and better. (2177 views)
Tasted by maaike2 on 5/13/2023 & rated 93 points: During 6 stars lunch BOB at Aan de Poel:Smooth, rich and power with tertiary notes and good length. Still young. (2556 views)
Tasted by DoubleD1969 on 11/5/2022: Pop n pour. Brought to a 60th birthday celebration. Expressive nose of graphite, cedar, macerated black cherries. Palate is velvety with the dark fruit. Would have liked to see how this evolved during the evening, but there were many other wines to try. Perhaps, decant the bottle ahead of time. (3344 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 11/5/2022 & rated 95 points: This is really showing well and with time, it is going to be even better. This is a good thing because you cannot get enough of its spicy, smoked currant, leather, tar, and tobacco character. Showing more elegance than power, at 21, this has entered the start of its drinking window. Drink from 2022-2045. (4376 views)
Tasted by dbkitc on 7/10/2022 & rated 94 points: A wonderful contrast to the equally exciting La Turque drunk alongside. Classic left bank Bordeaux. The deep ruby/crimson color does not show its age. Cassis, smoke and tobacco burst on the nose. Medium body, seemless and long. Wish I had a smoking jacket to wear while drinking this. Yum. (94) (3621 views)
Tasted by Shay.Aldriedge on 5/23/2022 & rated 95 points: When I purchased this five years ago, it was without a doubt the nicest bottle of Bordeaux I owned. 2001 was a good vintage for certain producers, and with Haut Brion being my favorite first growth, I wanted to have one of these with some age to see how they evolve. I slow ox’ed for 1-2hrs, consumed from bottle over the next three hours, and saved the last quarter for the next day.

Amongst quite a few first growths (and a ‘94 and ‘04 Haut Brion) this held its own. Compared to HB, it doesn’t have that brooding power and deep fruit core as intensely, but it wasn’t too far behind. More red fruit/black cherry than the dominant black I normally get with HB. Potpourri, baked black cherries, and cherry pipe tobacco showed strong on both days. No reductive funk to blow off. Faint notes of mocha, scorched earth and peppered strip, but it meshes with the cassis and grippy herbal tannic finish. What I didn’t expect was how vibrant the acidity was on both days. A beautiful example of high quality Bordeaux, and one I wish I had more of. (3602 views)
Tasted by Eddie stiefel on 4/15/2022: Traded for an 01 Cheval Blanc (3129 views)
Tasted by Pinot Peter on 1/30/2022: A wonderful wine. Great favours, great length, good acidity, all the flavours of a well aged Bordeaux. A great subtle sweetness, flavours of dark chocolate, black fruits ,leather, tobacco, a noticeable smokiness, tannins are showing on the back of the palate. Drinking well now. This can age but don't know if it will dry out and the tannins will take over the fruit component with more time? (2964 views)
Tasted by fredshouse on 10/30/2021 & rated 91 points: This nice bottle should have been in its prime… On opening the nose showed nicely but a strong acidic streak marred the flavor. After a loooong rest the acid calmed down and revealed a good, but not great, profile of dark fruits, aromatic spices and gravel. Plenty of life left and we enjoyed it, but it did not compare to some of the nicer bottles others have reviewed here. (3417 views)
Tasted by AlanM68 on 10/24/2021 & rated 94 points: In beautiful shape now but easily a decade more of potential. Decanted 2 hours before drinking but I wish I’d added a couple more hours (first of a case so I have time to get it right). Very together, great length, developing in many layers. (2960 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 10/22/2021 & rated 95 points: This is certainly in contention for the Left Bank wine of the vintage. Continuing to add weight and complexity, the naturally smoky nose adds oceanic nuances to its leather, tar, dark currant, burning wood, cedar and tobacco leaf nose. Medium/full-bodied, with length, complexity, freshness and a bite of ripe cassis, currant, and spicy, tobacco-covered blackberry on the palate, this is starting to drink quite well. As an added plus, this could be the best deal in older LMHB available today. (4626 views)
Tasted by Mr Coone on 8/12/2021 & rated 92 points: Wine still looked very young in the glass. Cherry-red with medium intensity and only a small change of colour in the rim.

Dominating primary aroma's in the nose with ripe cherry, blueberry, prune, cranberry, leather and some cacao.

On the palate: a little bit unripe and harsh tannins, medium + acidity.
Flavors of cherry, cedar, prune, leather, the unripe aroma's of green paprika and some vanilla in the retro with a long finish. (3248 views)
Tasted by steinersing on 4/9/2021 & rated 92 points: Very solid and impressive nose. But lacking seductiveness a little. (3868 views)
Tasted by Mr T on 3/30/2021: My first bottle and probably should have started drinking these younger to see development. This is pretty mature with still good fruit but much of the tannin resolved and flavors of mature, earthy Bdx. (3297 views)
Tasted by Tony Ling on 2/10/2021 & rated 93 points: Small pour served into Acker Zalto Burgundy glass (“Root” day): Pale garnet with some fine deposit.

Savoury spices, mature red cherry fruits, red dates and some old oak notes.

Good acidity and minerality. Mellow and enjoyable now.

93 points.

2nd round, 100 ml serving: good old Bordeaux here. Savoury leafy spices. Cherries that are quite detailed. (3686 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 2/9/2021 & rated 94 points: 2001 20-years on Commanderie dinner. Here we had the most complex nose of the evening. As so often, Mission Haut-Brion combines dark fruit with animatic and herbal notes, providing excellent depth and complexity. The palate was a bit too rustic for my tasted so I made some deductions on the overall score. Nose 96, Palate 94. Great wine to drink now and will keep another decade. (4437 views)
Tasted by cct on 1/16/2021 & rated 95 points: Decanted then drunk over several hours. A pleasant improvement after the first flawed bottle.

On the nose, Graves/Pessac earth, stone fruit more than cassis, tobacco, and bitter chocolate. The Merlot dominates the fruit profile on the nose and beyond. This has terrific palate presence. It's seamless, expansive, deep, and texturally rich, yet finely detailed with Grand Cru weight with more stone fruit, gravel and tobacco notes. This has effortless power coupled with grace. Very long on the back end. Drinking youthfully beautifully right now with plenty of time in hand. Wonderful. 95 (3680 views)
Tasted by dafmd on 12/16/2020 & rated 95 points: Decant 60 minutes; tasted over 3 hours; ruby; sous-bois, hint of bell pepper to begin with, medium bodied, dark berries, cedar, fountain pen ink; nice minerally finish of sweetness and tannin, (2733 views)
Tasted by B Paul on 10/11/2020: Decanted and drank over several hours. Classic Bordeaux nose. In the in between phase where it’s showing some aged notes but also retains some youthful qualities. It is still a bit big/burly and if I had another bottle I’d hold for a bit. (3187 views)

Producer website - Read more about Chateau La Mission Haut Brion

Château La Mission-Haut-Brion is the greatest Graves wine after Haut-Brion and in some vintages is considered the superior wine of the two. La Mission-Haut-Brion is situated just across the road from Haut-Brion in the commune of Talence in the southern suburbs of Bordeaux. Since 1983, both properties have been under the same ownership, Domaine Clarence Dillon S.A. La Mission-Haut-Brion's vineyards (Cabernet Sauvignon 48%, Merlot 45%, Cabernet Franc 7%) lie on a large (up to 18 metres deep in places) gravel bank interspersed with clay. The wine is fermented in temperature-controlled, stainless steel vats and then matured in oak barriques (100% new) for 18 months. The wines of La Mission Haut Brion are rich, oaky and powerful and need at least 10 years of bottle ageing before they should be broached.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman
