Tasted by gpcoleman on 4/30/2024 & rated 94 points: I have a lot of 2004 Brunellos and this is one of the best. Sadly, this is the last of this bottling. (225 views)
Tasted by O'Meara on 1/5/2024: This is ready to go! You can uncork it and go or wait for a couple of hours and it holds its form. We didn’t decant, so some of the loamy and creosote scents and flavors may be from the sediment. But who cares?!? The are dark fruited Sangiovese flavors of dark cherry and hints of boysenberry with some orange zest in the finish. A symmetrical spine of acidity keeps things fresh and refined, while the nicely integrated but noticeable tannins remind you that this is montalcino and not Chianti. I see a year or three of upside here, but there is no reason to wait unless you LOVE tertiary flavors. Yum yum red wine dumb. (899 views)
Tasted by WinePT on 12/28/2023 & rated 90 points: This is showing secondary and tertiary flavors that were not present with my previous bottle in 2014. Subtle notes of dried cherries, plum, balsamic vinegar, herb, leaves, earth. The tannins are prevalent throughout with a drying finish. Tasted over 3 hours from decanter, showing best around hour 2. I enjoyed this when it was younger. Will follow CT notes for opening my last bottle. (612 views)
Tasted by ddingley on 10/14/2023 & rated 95 points: This was a beautiful old bottle of wine. Brownish edges and a really rich complex nose of herbs and blue fruit. Soft on the palate and just a fascinating mix of tertiary flavors—blackberry, spices, metallic (iron?). (962 views)
Tasted by inserrm on 8/18/2023 & rated 94 points: This drank very well after about a three hour Decantering. Color was dark red almost a hint of rust, almost reflecting a bit of an amaro e style. It drink very well and smooth with a richness to it. I agree that I don’t think it will benefit from additional aging, and now is the time to drink it. (1027 views)
Tasted by Vinnut on 7/24/2023 & rated 94 points: Subsequent notes on this wine from close to 7 years ago. Dark garnet in color with some clearing at the edges. Full, forward & attractive nose of ripe fruit aromas of dark cherries, blackberries & plums with overtones of flora & earthy/dusty notes, spices, herbs, cocoa/coffee, sandalwood, anise, tobacco leaf, leather & a hint of cedar in the background. Full bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, complex, ripe fruit flavors of dark cherries, blackberries & mulberries with spices, earthy, herbs, minerals, cocoa & a hint of oak/vanilla. Long lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present with decanting & airing. At 19 years of age, it is holding up quite well & should maintain its current stage of development for several additional years. However, I doubt any further development would occur from additional aging. Fill was in the mid neck; cork was clean & intact. A wonderful, aged Brunello. (1170 views)
Tasted by gpcoleman on 7/24/2023 & rated 94 points: Had to aerate. Then it was a fabulous Brunello. (801 views)
Tasted by canan on 6/16/2023 & rated 94 points: Brunello 2004 Horisontal (My House): Impressive and dark cherry fruit and a lovely intensity. Lots of spices with a touch of iron. A very well-made wine that I really enjoyed. (872 views)
Tasted by dkwins on 12/8/2022 & rated 87 points: Tough to get past the nose for me, but others didn’t care for the wine either, as they felt it lacked the power and character in other reviews. (1206 views)
Tasted by dkwins on 11/6/2022 & rated 90 points: I have determined that this is just not my style of wine. The nose has too much funk and it lacks the smooth nuances I prefer. There is an interesting earthiness and a lot going on, but even with a long decant, it just doesn't work for me. 8 more bottles that will not be better with age. (1168 views)
Tasted by jfmontreal on 10/8/2022 & rated 97 points: Absolutely fantastic at this point in time. Very long and well integrated finish (1299 views)
Tasted by itadome on 5/1/2022 & rated 93 points: No formal note taken - decanted for 2h and drunk while prepping /cooking/eating. Way better after some air. Traditional , smooth/dissolved tannins, balanced and easy to drink, not withstanding the reported 15% alcohol .

Was worried about food pairing w Feliicetti fusilli with broccoli sautéed in duck fat, slow roasted duck wings/neck (duck breast saved for next day), but it worked out .
(I even had a bite of home made sockeye gravlax and was not off putting)

First of 6 bottles, will try and report back on others (1876 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 12/12/2021 & rated 93 points: I liked more than the missus. She's a new world fan. Decent nose. Plum colored rim. Full-bodied. Fruit complex, restrained. My daughter noted a hint of citrus on the back end. Smooth. Nice finish. (2154 views)
Tasted by DanielAVTL on 12/11/2021 & rated 91 points: [pop & pour] At the start - olives, cassis and maraschino cherries on the nose with a slight alcoholic edge, followed by robust dark fruit and some fairly soft tannins. After 45 minutes the alcohol relaxed revealing further notes of dark cherry and game. Really delicious fruit, sumptuous and mouth filling (almost Southern Rhone-like), although the tannins seemed to die out rather quickly and towards the end there was a slightly overripe feel to it all. No bricking, so I'm not sure it's a sign of age, but slight over ripeness and a structure that doesn't quite match the density of the fruit prevent this wine from achieving a great score. Still, giving this a 91, because of the wonderful flavors and complex nose which I found to be world-class. Very good stuff.

Paired (successfully) with braised lamb shoulder. Good but imperfect, drink now... No point in waiting, this isn't getting any better. (1760 views)
Tasted by Outplaying on 11/30/2021: Ten and a half years since we have opened one of these. Where does the time go? My tastes have changed a lot since I bought these and this is not really made in a style that I pursue now. Some cinnamon and earthy notes on the nose. The fruit is rich, with a sweet, sappy quality to it. Darker tones, some earth and tobacco accents. Decent acidity. Overall this is enjoyable and I am curious how the last glass will be after being open for a night. (1821 views)
Tasted by winemaker on 6/11/2021 & rated 93 points: Terrific right out of the chute. Enjoyed with a nice NY Strip. (2285 views)
Tasted by pigdaddy on 4/1/2021: decanted 45 min, prodigious quantity of sediment. anomaly bottle, pruney & over-ripe, not in character w/it's brethren from the same case.

not a cork issue, just appears to have gotten lost along its way; very tannic, roots & soil. too bad, as last few bottles were excellent. three remain, hold or check?

spaghetti alla chitarra w/green garlic, black pepper & guanciale, pecorino (2261 views)
Tasted by dkwins on 12/20/2020 & rated 91 points: I liked the second glass better than the first after a longer decant (90 minutes). It is still not a style I fully appreciate, (off putting nose, less settled), but the ripe dark fruit was enjoyable. (2133 views)
Tasted by tim m on 9/15/2020 & rated 95 points: So this was outstanding. Still has lots of fruit, tannin, acid, long finish, so in balance. Wonderful wine. Doesn't need much air, I poured and drank. Wonderful wine right now. (2449 views)
Tasted by tim m on 9/4/2020 & rated 96 points: Wow,
what a wine. Red fruit, nice tannin still very fine, super long finish. This still has years to go. Wonderful. (2344 views)
Tasted by stayhappy21 on 9/2/2020 & rated 92 points: Drank this at Kam Boat with my wine mates. Theme of the night: Wines that start with B.

A Brunello made in the more traditional style. Brickish red in colour with notes of wild mushrooms, ripe plums and a touch of coffee. More relaxed in style and charming in nature as compared to the 04 Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino.

Should be a good pair to roasted chicken and tomato-based pizza. (2080 views)
Tasted by dkwins on 7/31/2020 & rated 90 points: There are some good character traits that made it adequate, but a bit unwieldy and a less pleasant nose set a poort tone. It was my first bottle of 12, so hopeful it will elicit a better reaction down the road, but I think it is mature at this point and just not my style. (1959 views)
Tasted by pigdaddy on 6/15/2020 & rated 93 points: decanted 30 min. well damn, this is just as delicious as the last one 16 months ago; those notes apply, but are amplified by tonight's bottle's expressive & engaging profile, just quivering with crisp & definitive red wild cherry, crazy evocative aromatics & bright long finish. on an uncommonly cool & rainy early June evening, hard to beat & in peak form.

orecchiette all'amatriciana (2023 views)
Tasted by isbjoern on 3/30/2020 & rated 92 points: A wonderful bottle of aged Brunello. Forest floor, earthy and complex, lots of quality oak (a bit overdone for my taste), bright cherry fruit, sublime tannin structure, silky and caressing on the palate, excellent and prominent acidity, mouthwatering finish with a touch of heat. Overall, lots of class and elegance. This bottle has aged gracefully. Probably at peak now. - 92 points (1934 views)
Tasted by Vino Me on 2/21/2020 & rated 91 points: Opened by Mark. No formal notes. 91 points. (2320 views)

Sangiovese

SANGIOVESE: (Pronounced "sahn-joh-vhe-se").
Sangiovese - Italy's claim to fame, the pride of Tuscany. Traditionally made, the wines are full of cherry fruit, earth, and cedar. It produces Chianti (Classico), Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montepulciano, Montefalco Rosso, and many others. Sangiovese is also the backbone in many of the acclaimed, modern-styled "Super-Tuscans", where it is blended with Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc) and typically aged in French oak barrels, resulting a wine primed for the international market in the style of a typical California cabernet: oaky, high-alcohol, and a ripe, jammy, fruit-forward profile.[16]

Semi-classic grape grown in the Tuscany region of Italy. Used to produce the Chianti and other Tuscan red wines. Has many clonal versions, two of which seem to predominate. The Sangiovese Grosso clone Brunello variety is used for the dark red, traditionally powerful and slow-maturing "Brunello di Montalcino" wine. The other is the Sangiovese Piccolo, also known under the historical synonym name Sangioveto, used for standard Chianti Classico DOC wines. Old vine derived wine is often used in the better versions, needing several years ageing to reach peak. A third clone, Morellino, is used in a popular wine blend with the same name found in the southern part of the province. Recent efforts in California with clones of this variety are very promising, producing medium-bodied reds with rich cherry or plumlike flavors and aromas. Among the available clonal versions are R6 and R7, derived from the Montalcino region of Italy, having average productivity/ripening and producing small berries on medium size clusters. R10 and R24 are well-recommended. R23, listed as deriving from the Emilia-Romagna region, has good vigor with medium-small clusters with earlier ripening. R102 derives from the Montepulciano region and reported to have average vigor with moderate productivity that results in higher sugar levels and good acidity from medium-small berries on medium-small clusters. Has synonym name of Nielluccio where grown in Corsica.
