Fear and Loathing - of the alcohol on the label froze me and I did not touch this for a long time after I recieved it (around 2004). More wine entered my cellar and it was buried. Time passed and a few years ago I spotted it but my fear of the high alcohol gave way to a new fear...this must be way too old!

Paralyzed by this assumption it sat a few more years. Eventually I had to make some room for others in my cellar and so popped it very unceremoniously expecting an oxidized alcoholic mess overdue for the drain pipe.

I was wrong. My appologies to Messrs Brewer and Clifton. You made a brilliant wine. Bright yellow barely tarnished decade and a half age. There is bright lemon and saline minerality on the nose. Palate follows through gorgeously and yes there is a bit of alcohol on back end but what a pleasure!

if I was forced to do Parker Points it would go like this 5+14+17+6=92 but that does not capture my amazement or the smile on my face as I sipped this (509 views)

this is a remarkable wine on several fronts. i can't recall a chard with this high of an alcohol content; they made like, almost none of it, barely 100 cases; who makes anything like this on the planet? drink enough chard, which i do, and you will literally taste this and marvel at it's unique profile. it's so flippin' clean you could do surgery in the bottle. the acidity can only be described as perfect. finally a california wine for which i can use the term, crushed stones. i presume that's a euphemism for minerality. i've got only one minor complaint, and that is the finish is a little clipped. i love the mango/ passion fruit/ lemon lime cacaphony of flavors. alas, my last of three bottles. how a wine like this would age is only of minor concern; how can it get better? really fabulous.

 Tasted by Jay A on 5/22/2006 & rated 90 points: Pretty expressive nose of lemon and orange rind. In the mouth, citrus, but the mineral quality dominated. Had a clean and crisp finish. I would guess not a lot of oak treatment. Pretty powerful and good length.

orange rind, leesy, minerality and stones to the white burgundy max, full bodied, sensational finish.

i have 2 more bottles, and would KILL to have more.

Born of an obsession with Santa Barbara County terroir, we formed Brewer-Clifton in the early 1990’s. We both had significant sales and production experience with a multitude of Santa Barbara County wineries, and always felt compelled to push the limits of the fruit from the area further than our previous employers had set forth to do. We set out to put the essence of the best vineyards in the area into a bottle.

We focus our efforts solely on the production of vineyard designated Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from several carefully selected, extreme vineyards in the Sta. Rita Hills appellation. The area's long growing seasons and diversity of marine-based soils combine to produce dynamic and explosive wines with great purity and precision. Each vineyard site is nurtured identically, allowing the pedigree of place to play the most significant role in our portfolio of wines.

In addition to our collective efforts, Steve Clifton also produces wine under his own label, called Palmina, which focuses exclusively on Italian varietals, and is the winemaker at Tritono, an Argentine producer of Malbec. Greg Brewer produces wine under the diatom label, as well as being the winemaker at Melville, a Santa Rita Hills winery dedicated to estate grown Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah.

Brewer-Clifton wines are only available in small quantities. Total production averages between 4,000 and 6,500 cases annually.

Brewer-Clifton is owned and operated by Steve Clifton, a musician, and Greg Brewer, a former professor of French. The pair started Brewer-Clifton in 1995 and they source grapes from the Santa Rita Hills appellation. Brewer-Clifton makes Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and sparkling wine. The wines earn ratings in the 90s from reviewers, and Wine Advocate has noted that “Brewer and Clifton consistently deliver delicious wines that are also deeply thought provoking with regards to the potential these vineyard sites hold.”
